Objective : This study aimed to investigate the level of friendship perceived by hospital staffs in korean medicine hospitals in Gwangju and relationship between friendship and organizational effectiveness. Method : The subject were 134 hospital staffs in 5 different hospitals in Gwangju. The questionnaire used in this study contained 44 questions about workplace friendship (15 questions), organizational effectiveness (16 questions), social demographic characteristics (8 questions) and others (5 questions). Results : Young woman in their 20s and 30s were major participants (69person, 52.7%), nursing and administrative department(72person, 55%) were dominant division, the person those who have less than 1 year current workplace career(69person, 52.7%) were major group in this study. Participants responded about barriers of friendship at workplace were lack of opportunities for formal or informal meeting and lack of hospital's interest and supporting about human relations among employees at workplace. Both friendship level with superior and friendship level with subordinate were lower than friendship level with colleague. (p=.000) Participants who have higher workplace friendship level, were also higher level at job satisfaction, organizational commitment and lower level at turnover intention, job stress. Especially friendship level with superior had biggest relationship with variables of organizational effectiveness. Conclusion : Participants showed close relationship with friendship degree and organizational effectiveness. We suggest that the CEOs of korean medicine hospital would make their effort to improve friendship level of workers for the rise of organizational effectiveness.

Objective : This study set out to combine the treatment efficacy of Taraxacum with Dongchimi fermentation and investigate Taraxacum's effects on protection of liver cell and controlling nitric oxide(NO) through experiments, thus checking whether it had values as a physiological active matter. The experimental materials include Taraxacum Dongchimi (TD) and Taraxacum fermented by Dongchimi (TDF). As for methodology, experiments were carried out to compare TD and TDF in components, protection effects for liver cells, anticancer effects on liver cells, and protection effects for brain cells in the aspects of liver function and immunity enhancement. Method : The experimental materials include Taraxacum Dongchimi (TD) and Taraxacum fermented by Dongchimi (TDF). As for methodology, experiments were carried out to compare TD and TDF in components, protection effects for liver cells, anti-cancer effects on liver cells, and protection effects for brain cells in the aspects of liver function and immunity enhancement. Results : As shown in the chromatogram results, each valid component content increased in Taraxacum fermented by Dongchimi (TDF) for each time section. Of them, the valid component content at 36.80 minutes was approximately 2.7 times higher in TDF at 21.8% than in Taraxacum Dongchimi (TD) at 8.28%. TDF generated more excellent protection effects against the toxicity that caused oxidative damage to the liver cell(HepG2) with t-BHP than TD. The survival rate was low in TD of $100{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ and $300{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ and increased to 23.3% in TDF of $100{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. The survival rate was the highest at $300{\mu}M$ with a significant difference of 68.1%(P<0.05). Both TD and TDF showed effects of controlling nitric oxide production according to concentration with TDF recording a higher rate of controlling nitric oxide production than TD. There were significant differences(P<0.05) in the effects of controlling nitric oxide production at 200 ug/ml, 400 ug/ml in both groups. Especially the result TDF of $400{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ was thus similar to those of butein, the positive control group. Conclusion : The result of this studies is that Taraxacum fermented by Dongchimi (TDF) increased the valid component content compared with the simple mixture(TD). The findings clearly show that it is a material with the effects of improving immunity and liver cell protection. If fermentation methods are further developed to use it as a functional material, it will be subject to more opportunities of being used in other functional foods and make a contribution to integrated medicinal food development.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to lay the groundwork for understanding the details and scope of the legal definition of medicinal products, following the changes in the relevant laws and regulations. This will let readers properly understand the origins of the ongoing conflicts on herbal drugs and new drugs from natural products that are present in the medical field and the medical industry. Possible solutions are proposed in the end. Method : I analyzed the changes in definition of medicinal products since 1945 that have been used in relevant laws and regulations(i.e. Pharmaceutical Affairs Act) and drug approval process(i.e. New Drug Application and Investigational New Drug Application). Results : Legal definition of medicinal products has changed in accordance with the changes in the pharmaceutical industry, such as the establishment of dualistic medical and pharmaceutical System and the introduction of the substance patent. Due to those changes, boundaries of Western medicinal products and health food expanded, while those of herbal medicine products relatively downscaled. Conclusion : Legal definition of medicinal products-i.e. Herbal Drugs, Crude Drugs, and New Drugs from Natural Products-should be reestablished according to academic legitimacy and dualistic medical and pharmaceutical System.

This study was conducted to analyze if there is a difference between the head hospital and branch hospital by comparing the profitability and operating expenses to patient revenue of oriental medicine hospitals affiliated with universities in order to find whether opening branch hospitals is an appropriate method to increase profitability. Profit indices used for the comparison of head hospital and branch hospital include ratio of operating profit on medical revenue, net-income on medical revenue, net profit to total assets, and operating profit to total assets; and cost indices included ratio of labor costs, material costs and administrative costs. In comparison of profit indices of head hospitals and branch hospitals, head hospitals displayed negative(-) in all four profit index averages while branch hospitals displayed positive(+), showing that branch hospitals have higher profitability. In particular, in the case of head hospitals, ratio of net profit to total assets was -13.6%, while that of branch hospitals was 12.9%, which was higher than 3.1%, the average of Korean oriental medicine hospitals in 2011. As a result of difference analysis between groups of head hospitals and branch hospitals, profit indices of ratio of operating profit on medical revenue, net-income on medical revenue, and ratio of net profit to total assets were found to vary by hospitals, but there was no statistically significant difference between head hospitals and branch hospitals(p<0.1). Only the ratio of operating profit to total assets of head hospitals and branch hospitals indicated significant difference between the two groups, showing that ratio of operating profit to total assets of branch hospitals is larger than that of head hospitals. Meanwhile, the cost indices of ratio of labor costs, material costs and administrative costs in the difference test results did not show significant difference between the head hospital and branch hospital(p<0.1). Thus, it cannot be said that a certain oriental medicine hospital's profitability is high or low depending on whether it is head hospital or a branch as profitability varies depending on the management environment of the hospital. Therefore, oriental medicine hospitals affiliated with universities would need to make efforts to increase their profitability as an individual hospital rather than focusing on whether they are head hospital or a branch.

The concentration of 5 metals such as As, Cd, Co, Cr and Pb in 5 frequent using herbal medicinal prescriptions in Korea were analyzed according to the consuming area. The ready prepared 5 prescription samples were obtained from Korean regional hospitals nationwide. All the sample were well powdered and pre-treated to being a solution, and then analyzed by ICP/MS. As was detected the highest concentration of 0.55 mg/kg in Ojeoksan of Gyunggi-do, the lowest was 0.01 mg/kg of Sipjeondaebotang of Seoul C. The highest concentration of Co was found to be in Bojoongikgitang of Seoul B and the lowest was also detected in Bojoongikgitang of Seoul A. Cd concentration, Ojeoksan of Chungcheong-do, Bojoongikgitang of Seoul B and yookmijihwangtang of Chungcheong-do showed the low level of 0.1 mg/kg. In turn, the highest level of Cr was 5.59 mg/kg in Ojeoksan of Gyunggi-do B. The lowest concentration of Cr was 0.04 mg/kg in Sipjeondaebotang of Seoul C and the highest was 0.94 mg/kg in Samooltang of Gangwon-do. Finally, the lowest concentration of Pb was 0.00 mg/kg in Sipjeondaebotang of Chungcheong-do and the highest was 0.134 mg/kg in Ojeoksan of Jeju-do. As a result it seems that the same prescription can not guaranteed the safety from toxic metals since those metal concentrations are dramatically varied according to the area where the each prescribed medicine available.

Objective : To find a treatment strategy, this study aimed to review and compare the clinical studies of Korea, China, and Japan on traditional medicine treatment for Behcet's disease. Method : Literature searches were performed on six databases in each country and English databases, such as OASIS, KoreanTK, CNKI, J-STAGE, PubMed, and Cochrane CENTRAL. In addition, using the limited keywords, the area was restricted to traditional medicine treatment, but the period was not limited. Studies were categorized according to the study design and we analyzed the difference of treatment among three countries. Results : One hundred and forty-one clinical studies met our inclusion criteria: 11 studies in Korea, 15 in Japan, 115 in China. Randomized controlled trials (RCT) have increased in China, however, no RCT was reported in Korea and Japan. The method of treatment was mainly traditional herbal medicine in all the three countries, but there were significant differences in the field of syndrome identification and prescription among countries. The studies in China made use of most various treatment modalities and reported the highest effectiveness. Conclusion : Traditional medicine treatment showed a considerable effect for improving various symptoms of Behcet's disease. However, more research for answering the safety and well-designed studies considering characteristics of Behcet's disease should be performed to evaluate the effectiveness of traditional medicine treatment objectively in the future.

Objective : This study was performed to investigate the antineoplastic effect of Astragalus membranaceus, Angelica gigas, Rhus verniciflua Stokes and Trichosanthes kirilowii on SNU-80 anaplastic thyroid carcinoma cell line. Method : We examined whether our herbal medicines decreases cell growth rate of SNU-80 using MTT assay. We performed western blot analysis to verify that our herbal medicines induces apoptosis via caspase-dependent mechanism. We also performed wound healing assay and transwell invasion assay to investigate whether our herbal medicines affects the migration and invasion of anaplastic cancer cells, SNU-80. We also carried out ELISA assay to know our herbal medicines suppresses the expression of proinvasive molecules, such as VEGF and MMP-2 secreted from SNU-80. Results : MTT assay demonstrates that Angelica gigas, Rhus verniciflua Stokes, and Trichosanthes kirilowii suppressed strongly the growth of SNU-80. Western blot analysis demonstrates that Trichosanthes kirilowii induces apoptosis activating the cleavages of caspases (caspase-8, caspase-3) and PARP. Wound healing assay demonstrates that Rhus verniciflua Stokes, and Trichosanthes kirilowii inhibited the migration of SNU-80. Transwell invasion assay demonstrates that Rhus verniciflua Stokes, and Trichosanthes kirilowii inhibited the invasion of SNU-80. Elisa assay demonstrates that Astragalus membranaceus, Angelica gigas, Rhus verniciflua Stokes, and Trichosanthes kirilowii suppressed the expression of VEGF and MMP-2. Conclusion : We could conclude that several herbal medicines suppresses the growth and inhibits the migration and invasion of SNU-80 which is anaplastic thyroid cancer cells. Especially, Rhus verniciflua Stokes, Trichosanthes kirilowii had stronger anti-cancer effect suggesting that we can apply them to treat anaplastic thyroid cancer.

Objective : The aim of this study is to analyze medicinal herbs, the ingredients of traditional Korean liquor, focusing on efficacy in the traditional Korean medicine. Through this study, for vitalizing traditional Korean liquor market, the researchers attempt to explain the superiority of traditional Korean liquor and the advantages of using herbs to brew alcoholic beverages. Method : We conducted a research targeting traditional Korean liquors in domestic market from July through september 2012, and finally 70 kinds of liquor were selected and analyzed. Results : Among traditional liquors, fermented liquors are most common. When comparing regions of brewery, the central region of Korea, Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheongnam-do, is major brew area. 37 liquors contain just one medicinal herb. followed 10 liquors contain two medicinal herbs. The most frequently used medicinal herb is Ginseng Radix. And Lycii Fructus, Schisandrae Fructus, Angelicae Gigantis Radix and Chrysanthemi Indici Flos are well used medicinal herbs to brew traditional liquors. In the classification of efficacy of medicinal herbs, tonifying and replenishing medicinal herbs are most popular as ingredients in the traditional alcohols, astringent medicinal herbs, exterior releasing medicinal herbs and heat clearing medicinal herbs are also frequently used. Investigation of tastes and properties of the herbs, it reached a conclusion as below: sweet taste is most common, followed by sour taste and bitter taste. Warm property is account for 50% approximately, followed by cold property. Conclusion : Medicinal herbs have been widely used in the traditional Korean liquor. It came out into the open that the liquor with medicinal herbs is very good for our body in terms of longevity and invigoration. However, liquor consumers concern about not only the efficacy but also the taste, scent and color. Therefore, further study about these things would be required to demonstrate the superiority of the traditional Korean liquor.

Objective : Understanding the state of sanitation policy during the period of Japanese colonization of Korea. Method : Analyze 'Slang on hygiene practices' found in Korean medical journal "ChoSunEuiHakGye" that published in the period of Japanese colonization. And analyze articles that were same theme. Results : Japanese colonial policy regards the colony people's old adage of health as outrageous things. Japanese colonial police demands don't use old adage of health because it is obstruction to colonial hygiene policy. Conclusion : The Japanese occupation health administration led by the Japanese police considered Korean people as significant. And they regarded old adage of health as harmful habits. In addition, the knowledge derived from traditional Korean medicine was turned away outrageous things. Traditional Korean medicine knowledge lost the chance of renewal.

Objective : This study is aimed to analyze the recent research trend of Sipjeondabo-tang (SJDBT) in Korea. Method : We searched Korean research database by using keyword 'Sipjeondabo-tang'. Databases are Korean Medicine Information System, Research Information Service System and Korean Studies Information Service System. We analyzed studies by research method, publication year, type of journal and subject of the study. Results : By analyzing studies published after 1990, we could find that experimental studies were primarily conducted in SJDBT study. During recent 10 years, the number of toxicity studies and components analysis studies is increasing. Among the SJDBT studies, the number of clinical study was only 1. Conclusion : We explored the recent research trend of SJDBT in Korea. As a result, We suggested three further research ways of SJDBT. Proposed research ways are exploring various effect of SJDBT, observing whether there is a difference of effect according to extracting and drying method, and conducting clinical research of SJDBT.

Objective : Polycan, exopolymers purified from Aureobasidium pullulans SM-2001 and calcium gluconate have been showed favorable inhibitory effects on the periodontitis and related alveolar bone losses through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, respectively. In the present study, we intended to observe the possible synergic effects of mixed formula consisted of Polycan and calcium gluconate on ligation-induced experimental periodontitis and related alveolar bone losses in rats, and to select the fittest compositions for further developing as effective agents to ameliorate periodontal diseases. Method : Experiments were conducted as two separated two tests - first is synergic effects of Polycan and calcium gluconate 1:1, 1:9 and 9:1 mixtures, and second is 1:99, 2:98, 4:96, 8:92 and 1:9 mixtures. Experimental periodontal diseases were induced by ligature placed around the cervix of upper left incisior teeth of rats. One day after ligation placements, 200mg/kg of each single or mixed formulas of Polycan or/and calcium gluconate were orally administered for 10 days. The changes on the alveolar bone loss index and maxillary bone mineral density (BMD) were observed for detecting alveolar bone losses, and for anti-inflammatory effects, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities and proinflammatory cytokine (tumor necrosis factor; TNF-${\alpha}$) contents were also evaluated in gingival tissues around ligature placed incisior teeth. The results of mixtures were compared with those of singe Polycan and calcium gluconate treated rat. Results : Each single or mixed formulas of Polycan or/and calcium gluconate favorably and significantly inhibited the inflammatory changes. The inhibitory effects of mixed formula consisted of Polycan and calcium gluconate 1:9 showed against periodontitis and related alveolar bone losses as compared with those of each Polycan and calcium gluconate single formula (p<0.05). In second experiment, Polycan and calcium gluconate 2:98, 4:96, 8:92 and 1:9 mixed formulas also showed significant increased anti-inflammatory and inhibitory effects against alveolar bone losses as compared with those of each single formula. Among them, Polycan and calcium gluconate 2:98 showed the highest efficacy against to ligation-induced experimental periodontitis and related alveolar bone losses. Conclusion : The results obtained in this study suggest that appropriated mixtures of Polycan and calcium gluconate showed synergic inhibitory effects against ligation-induced experimental periodontitis and related alveolar bone losses in rats. Moreover, Polycan and calcium gluconate 2:98 showed the highest efficacies in this experiment, suggesting the fittest composition for further developing as effective agents to ameliorate periodontal diseases.
