5가지 향끽미종 잎담배의 헤드스페이스 휘발성 성분들을 중합체 흡착방법 및 고성능 유리 캐피러리 가스 크로마토그라피로 분석하였다. 얻어진 가스 크로마토그라피의 프로파일을 비교한 결과 각 담배 시료는 독특한 방향성분의 조성을 보여주며 주요성분의 정량적인 차이가 현저함이 확인되었다.

새로이 고안된 distillation/solvent extraction방법을 이용하여 오리엔트산 향끽미종과 한국산 향끽미종 잎담배의 정유성분을 분리하였다. 정유성분들을 고성능 가스 크로마토그라지로 분석한 결과 각 잎담배로 부터 특징적인 GC 프로파일을 얻을수 있었다. 얻어진 GC분석자료를 정량적으로 비교함으로써 품종간의 상이점이 확인되었다.

This experiment was carried out to determine the relationships between maturity and content of the chemical components in flue-cured tobacco. The results were as follows : 1) Among the chemical components, the contents of total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, total alkaloids, nicotine, total volatile base, petroleum-ether extract, crude fiber, crude ash, water soluble ash, and chlorine decreased significantly, and those of total sugar, reducing sugar, and starch increased as leaf maturity progressed until the stage of ripeness, but, afterwards, a reverse tendency appeared. 2) There was a significant relationship between maturity and the contents of chemical components, such as total nitrogen, protein nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, total volatile base, and the correlation coefficients of them were -0.743, -0.789, -0.797, and -0.642, respectively.

Flue-cured tobacco leaves, produced in Korea and in the USA in 1980, were analyzed for their sugar contents. Regardless of tobacco varieties or production localities, glucose was the most abundant and sucrose the lowest among free sugars. In terms of total sugar, USA-produced leaves contained the highest concentration in the grade of $C_3F$ (equivalent to the $L_3$ grade in Korean standard) , but Korea produced ones in the grades of the $H_1\;and\;L_1$, (equivalent to the $B_1F\;and\;C_1F$ grades, respectively, in the USA standard) . Otherwise, we could not find any significant differences in sugar contents between American and Korean tobacco leaves.

The moisture sorption and desorption isotherms of various tobaccos were obtained over a relative humidity range from 0 to 90% at $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$. The hysteresis effect, constant and rate of moisture sorption and desorption, monomolecular-layer moisture content, and specific surface area were analyzed from the obtained data. The moisture sorption and desorption isotherms showed a different characteristics for different tobacco varieties. At a lower humidity range below 50% RH, Burley tobacco had higher moisture sorption and desorption figures than Hicks and Basma, while, at a higher humidity range above 50% RH, Hicks had higher values than the others. The hysteresis effect of tobacco were greater in an intermediate humidity range (40-70% RN), and Basma showed a greater effect than the others. The sorption and desorption constant (K) increased with temperature, but decreased with RH, and Burley tobacco had larger K values, while Hicks had smaller K values than others. The sorption and desorption rate of Burley tobacco were greater than the other tobaccos. The monomolecular-layer moisture was 27.8 and 51.4mg/g, and the specific surface was 101 and $186m^2/g$, for Basma and Burley, respectively.

Dihaploid lines were derived from the anthers of the F, of single cross, "Va 115" x"SC 72" (Nicotiana tabacum L.). The path-analysis, correlation coefficient, and variation of characteristics among dihaploid families were evaluated. Dihaploid lines displayed much greater variation than their parents. The genetic correlation coefficient between yield and total alkaloids of dihaploids was significantly lower than that of conventional varieties and lines. In path-analysis which relates yield components to yield, number of leaves harvested and leaf width had a direct effect on yield. a direct effect on yield.

To obtain genetic information for breeding aromatic tobacco, broad sense heritabilities, phenotypic, and genotypic correlations were obtained for the following characters : days to frowert, plant height, number of leaves, leaf shape and nicotine. Six pure line varieties and the first and second generations of 5 crosses among them were employed in this study. The heritabilities for number of leaves and nicotine were very high in pure line varieties. However, the heritabilities for days to flower and yield were low in six varieties as well as in F2. Genotypic correlations had higher values than phenotypic did. Heritabilities calculated from segregating generations were lower than those from pure varieties, regardless of crosses involved. Positive phenotypic correlations between yield and plant height were observed in all crosses. Same phenomenon was observed with correlations between days to flower and number of leaves. The genotypic and phenotypic variances and covariances entering into the computation of correlations were used to construct the seletion indices for yield. The use and limitation of selection index was also discussed.

This study was carried out to investigate the influence of distance of planting holes (51, 45, and 40 cm) and number of plants per a hole(4, 5, 6 plants) on agronomic characteristics, yield, and quality of an aromatic tobacco, Sohyang. The results are as follows: 1. Relative light intensity increased by widening the distance of holes. 2. Leaf area per a plant or per a leaf, and leaf length and width increased by widening the distance of holes and decreased by increasing the number of plants per a hole. But L. A. 1. increased by increasing the number of plants per a hole. Leaf shape index (Leaf length/Leaf width) showed little differences among treatments. 3. Dry weight of leaf, root, and stem per a plant decreased by increasing the number of plants per a hole. 4. Total nitrogen decreased by increasing number of plants per a hole and in the case of narrow distance of holes, but nicotine, reducing sugar, ether-extract and ash showed little differences. 5. Yield per 10a decreased by widening the distance of holes. 6. Quality(price per kg) was improved by increasing the number of plants per a hole at the Plot of 51m distance of holes. But there was no variation at the Plot of 45cm. And quality was decreased at the plot of 40cm distance of holes by increasing the number of Plants per a hole. 7. Price per 10a was highest in the plot of which plant spacing was $90\times$40cm and the number of plants per a hole was 4 (11112 plant/10a).

This study was conducted to investigate the interaction between chemical compositions and agronomic characteristics of perique tobacco leaf. At the topping stage, the thickness of leaf was positively correlated with total sugar($\textrm{0.975}^{**}$), reducing sugar($\textrm{0.975}^{**}$), alkaloid($\textrm{0.518}^{*}$) and petroleum ether extract($\textrm{0.801}^{**}$) contents. The length of upper leaf was negatively correlated with its chemical contents. Total sugar contents of the harvested leaf showed a sigmoid pattern of distribution along the leaf stalk positions.
