Current design of pile group is based on the estimation of the overall bearing capacity of a pile group from that of a single pile using a group efficiency. However, the behaviors of a pile group are influenced by various factors such as method of pile installation, pile-soil-pile interaction, cap-soil-pile interaction, etc. Thus it is practically impossible to take into account these factors reasonably with the only group efficiency, In this paper, a new method for the design of pile groups is proposed, where the significant factors affecting the behavior of a pile group are considered separately by adopting several efficiencies. Furthermore, in the proposed method, the load transfer characteristics of piles and the difference of pile behaviors with respect to the pile locations in group can be taken into account. The efficiencies for the method are determined using the settlement failure criterion, which is consistent with the concept of allowable settlement for structures. The efficiencies calculated from the results of existing model tests are presented, and the bearing capacity of a pile group in the other model test is calculated and compared with that from the test result, to verify the validity of the proposed method.

The Design criteria are different from one another due to the different engineering properties of rock in the every nation. Most of the test results of the rock-socketed piers were loaded two times of the design load capacities because they would be used in the foundation of the bridge or the building. So we have much difficulties in study of the load capacities of the rock-socketed piers by the test result in Korea. When we design the rock-socket piers, every designer uses the different formula, and makes different results. Recently the demand of the large bridges and the huge buildings has been increased. The adequate design criterion of the rock-socketed pier is urgently needed to design them reasonable. In this paper we analyzed the various design criteria and proposed the adequate design criterion which is based on the test results of the rock-socked piers in Korea.

To find a lateral long term behavior of driven H-piles in embankment, inclinometer is installed at pile and measurement is done during a year. When behavior of measured slope angles is in accord with behavior of nonlinear p-y curves(Reese, Murchison and O'Neil, Matlock's p-y analysis), maximum displacement of pile head, maximum stress and maximum bending moment of pile obtained from the numerical analysis are shown. As results, maximum lateral displacement at pile head, maximum stress and maximum bending moment of pile are shown linear behavior, And maximum lateral load, maximum lateral displacement, and maximum bending moment at pile obtained from the numerical analysis are 8∼12.4tonf, 9∼10.1㎜, and 10.39∼12.67tonf-m per pile according to the curves, respectively.

As piling works in urban area increasing, SIP which is low noise & vibration piling method is taking place of driven pile which has good bearing charateristics and economics. Since SIP has been used for more than 15 years and it's application is increasing year by year, however, accurate analysis of bearing mechanism of SIP is not enough. So the design of SIP is much more conservative than driven pile. This paper is aimed to analyse the bearing charateristics of 103 SIPs constructed in Korea to give rational design criteria. Research result shows that bearing capacity of SIP is 40% lower than that of driven pile and conservative Meyerhof(equation omitted) method produced closer result to load test results than other design method. And this result show that to use optimised design criteria for the economic SIP design, quality control criteria must be settled down to produce high in-situ bearing capacity.

To analyze a bearing capacity for pile groups, a number of model tests have been done and theoretical methods studied. In the case of design of group pile bearing capacity is calculated with only pile capacity. But uncertainty of bearing capacity and behavior of foundation cap(raft) leads to conservative design ignoring bearing effects of foundation cap. In the case of considering bearing capacity of foundation cap, the simple sum of bearing capacity of foundation cap and pile groups cannot be the bearing capacity of total foundation system. Since cap-pile-soil interaction affects the behavior of pile groups. Thus, understanding cap-pile-soil interaction is very important in optimal design. In this paper, the piled raft behavior is studied through model tests of 2$\times$2, 2$\times$3, 3$\times$3 pile group. Changes of behavior of pile group foundation by touching effects of foundation cap with soil are studied. Also changes of spacing between piles. Foundation cap is made of rigid steel plate and piles are made steel pipes. From this model tests, the changes of behavior changes of pile groups by touching effects of foundation cap with soil are studied.

During the installation of drilled shafts in very soft ground, to keep the pile shape and to central concrete quality, casing method (wrinkled pipe and embedded steel pipe) and non-casing method have been used. In the construction cost, non-casing method was the most economical. When the wrinkled pipe and the embedded steel pipe casing method are used, an increase of 133% and 123% in the construction cost could be seen. When concrete for drilled shaft was placed under groundwater, underwater unseparation concrete would be used to restrain the concretes's material separation and to control the concrete quality. On the condition of required unseparable and (lowing property was assured, use of less amount of mixed material and flowing material must be recommended.
