The health screening and promotion is an emerging field of clinical preventiemedicine and is proved to be effective for reduction of diseaseprevalence, particularly life-style related diseases in aged population. However, the goal of perodic health screening can be achieved by a reliable health screening that largely depond on the quality of tests. Various tests including ultrasonography, endoscopy, CT and automated blood analyzers are used in health screening. Thesescreening tests are usually sensitive, but not specific to the presence of diseases. It meams the tests produce more false positive results, that demand eztra-expenses for the confirmation of disease. Promising screening tests should be sensitive as well as specific. However, it is not easy to maintain the quality of laboratory tests, because it is affected by various factors, such as instruments, reagents, laboratory methods and human factors. This review focuses on internal and external quality control of laboratory tests and quality management of health screening services to obtain reliable test results.

Although it has been well known that smokimg is one of the major cause of various disease and conditions, the smoking rate is still very high in Korea. A variety of smoking cessation program are provided by public organization and also by healthcare institutions. In this social enviroment, the smoker's intension and trial rates for smokimg cessation increasing, but it is also true that the succes rate is low about 30%. Therefore this study was conducted to suggest the strategies for providing the effective smoking cessation programs by exploring the factors related to recognition and behavioral intention or programs. To explain the health behavior for smoking and smoking cessation programs, the behavioral model was constructed. The model is composed of five-stages such as recognition of the program, past exprience, present smoking status, intention for smoking, and behavioral intention for cessation programs. It is results that there were very low recognition and and purchase rates for most of smoking cessation programs. Evidenced-based and effective smoking cessation progrms need to be encouraged to smokers by medical doctors, and the strategies of eucationm public realtions, and advertisement are recommended. In addition, cotinuing legal and systematic supports for smoking cessation would lower the smoking rate and ultimately ontribute to the nation;s health promotion, Recognitionm Behavioral Intention.

In Korea association of health promotion(KHAP) there are fourteen laboratories in branch offices and one laboratory in headquarter office. To standardize the reference ranges of all laboratories of KAHP, they have been newly calculated from the laboratory data perfomed during the previous yearsby statistical metod annually for the period of 2000 through2003 so far. The referance ranges of total 56 test items were assigned. Among these there were eight test items that needed referance ranges by age groups and nine test items that needed reference rages by gender. The age grouping was into six groups : baby (0-3y), children(4-12y), adolescent(13-18y), adult(19-64y), younger elderly(19-64y), older elderly(over 80y) with references of statics in Medical Informatics and WHO classification. All the data collected were statistically analyzed with SAS 6.04 for Gaussian distribution that had been repeated two or three times after trimming out the the tests showed Gaussian distribution. Subsequently, Thereference ranges were defined in the rage from the point of lower 2.5% to the point of higher 97.5%. And in case the lower range could be "0", the reference ranges were defined in the range of 0 to 95%. Fifteen laboratoried troughout Korea of KAHP currently have standarzed reference rages of the tests that they perform. This means the patient data and reference values an be exchangeable among laboratories of KHAP.Annual revise of such reference rages can eventually lead to the level of those representing a standard of the national reference ranges.

Vomiting in pediatric patient is frequently encountered problem in emergency room or outpatient clinic. In differential diagnosis, age of the patient or accompanying symptoms should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Accurate diagnosis is very important because surgical treatment is necessary in some of the conditions. Imaging diagnosis of conservative modality such as upper gastrointestinal series or colon study is still important radiological examination in the initial differential diagnosis, but recently ultrasonography offers accurate diagnosis in many situations. The cause of vomiting in pediatric are diverse according to the age group :neonatal sepsis, necrotizing enterocolitis, or hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in neonates : gastroesophageal reflux, viral enteritis, or intussusception in infant: midgut volvulus, appendicitis, metabolic disorders, or increased intracranial pressure also an be the cause. knowledge of radiological findings of normal gastrointestinal tract is important to recognize abnormalities. A discussion of radiological findings in variable surgical conditions to present as vomiting in pediatric patients is offered.

The current status and future prospects of parasitic infections in Korea is briefly reviewed. Soil-transmitted helminth infections including ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm infections decreased remarkably. owing to the national control activities excuted by the Korea Association of Health Promotion(formerly Korea Association of parasite Eradication) using mass heath education. Important recent trends include reemergence of vivax malaria since 1993, persistence of food-borne trematode infections including clonorchiasis and intestinal trematode infections, increased detection of zoonotic parasitosis, close-up of infection with opportunistic parasites including cryptosporidiosis, toxoplasmosis, and pneumosytosis, increase of imported tropical infectious disease, appearance of new parasitic disease such as gymnophalloidiasis, and increase of accidental infections with free-living amoebae. These trends represent greatly changed overall patterns of parasitic infections in Korea.

The NGO program of "intestinal parasite Control among primary Schoolchildren of Lao PDR", supported by KOICA and implemented by KAHP, has started in 1999 and will be executed until 2004. Under cooperation of the LAo Ministry of Health, WHO, Korean Embassy and KOCIA, for the last 4 years, KHIP has conducted parasitological survey throughout the country, supply of medical equipment and anti-helminthics and treatment of positive people. The results of the survey is as below : A total of 29,846 stool specimens were collected from primary schoolchildren from May 2000 to June 2002 and examined once with the cellphone thick smear. By species, the rate for Ascaris lumbricoides was 34.9%, hookworm 19.1%, Trichuris trihiura 25.8%, Opisthorchis iverrini 10.9%, Taenia spp. 0.6% and Hymenolepis spp. 0.1%. The northern mountainous regions showed a higher prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths. The regions along the Mekong River such as Khammuane, Saravane or Svannakhet Province showed a higher prevalence of fish-borne parasites.
