Hantaan virus(HV) 76-118 strain was inoculated into suckling ICR mice by intra-nasal route with an inoculum of $10LD_{50}$. Mortality was 65% at the 3rd week after inoculation, but declined to 35% at the 4th week. Infectivity was determined by the measuring immuno-fluorescent antibody in sera. The peak of infectivity was 80% at the 4'th week after inoculation. Viremia was reached peak level of $1.7{\times}10^4\;PFU/ml$ by day 10. Immunofluorescent antibody and neutralizing antibody appeared by 2 weeks and 15-17 days respectively, but achieved similar titer by 35 days. By using a monoclonal antibody to HV 76-118, viral antigens were initially detected in inguinal and axillary lymph node by 2 days. Viral antigens in bone marrow and lung were delayed much more than in those of lymph node. These were similar with those of intra-peritoneal and intra-muscular route. Immune complex against IgG, IgM and C3 appeared by 16 days, 14 days, and 18 days respectively. The pattern of immunofluorescence in the basement membrane of glomeruli was diffuse membranous. Spotted pattern was also observed in the tissue stained with anti-mouse C3 antibody. By 20 days, control tissue was also shown immune complex in the glomeruli.

During 31 days (5 week) from December 9th 1985 to January 8th 1986, Influenza B epidemic were observed in Seoul city. Epidemic peak was shown at 52nd week in 1985. The Epidemic associated viruses were determined as B/yamanish/510/84 and B/Ann Arbor/1/86-like strain. From total of 124 specimens of influenza-like illness children virus isolation rate were average 4.0%, much lower than that of influenza A virus isolation experience. In the epidemic influenza B infection were predominantly involved in school age children.

Pulmonary fungal infection has been investigated in patients with healed or active pulmonary tuberculosis or other lung diseases by demonstrating serum precipitating antibodies to the various fungal antigens and by isolating the related fungi from sputums or other clinical specimens. Out of 1,192 suspected patients, 405(34.0%) showed precipitin bands on immunodiffusion tests and the related fungi have been demonstrated in sputums or other specimens of 79.5% of them(327) whose specimens had been cultured. Three patients did not have precipitating antibodies to any fungal antigen, but the same fungus was repeatedly isolated from sputums of two patients for over one year of period and from open lung biopsy specimen in the other patient. Most commonly involved species in pulmonary infection were A. fumigatus(70.3%) and C. albicans (at least 23.8%), followed by A. flavus, P. boydii, A. nidulans, etc. Out of fungi isolated from individuals(459), who were apparently not infected with fungi, molds were 66.0% and the rest, yeasts. Most commonly encountered molds were aspergilli(31.7%), followed by penicilli(16.3%), Cladosporium spp.(2.8%), Fusarium spp.(2.2%), etc. C. albicans(16.6%) was of course most common yeast in human sputums and the other species were seen in few.

To detect lepotospiral strains which produce hemolysin and determine the optimal condition for assaying hemolysin, we screened reference strains and observed some property of hemolysin. Hemolysin activity was assayed with cell free culture liquids and erythrocyte suspension. The production of hemolysin by local strains isolated in Korea was assayed and compared with that of reference strains. The hemolysin was produced by 18 strains among 38 reference strains and 3 local strains isolated in Korea. The production of hemolysin began with growth of Leptospira cultured in EMJH medium and reached maximum at stationary phase. The optimum temperature for hemolytic activity was $37^{\circ}C$. At lower temperature the activity of hemolysin was decreased progressively. The hemolytic activity was completely inactivated after :30 minutes' exposure at $56^{\circ}C$. Hemolysis pattern was "hot-cold type" which showed increased hemolysis after cold incubation. The hemolysin was most active on sheep erythrocyte and less active on ox, goat, human and guinea pig erythrocyte with the decreasing order.

Multiply resistant Shigella strains isolated in Taegu area were subjected for the characterization of R plasmids. All strains isolated in 1984 and 1985 were susceptible to gentamicin, amikacin, and cephalothin, and most strains were susceptible to kanamycin (Km) and rifampin by agar dilution antimicrobial susceptibility test. The resistance frequency of S. flexneri against ampicillin (Ap) was higher than that of S. sonnei. The strains resistant to sulfisomidine (Su) and trimethoprim (Tp) were found at higher frequency in S. sonnei than in S. flexneri. The most prevalent resistance pattern of S. flexneri was chloramphenicol (Cm) tetracycline (Tc) streptomycin (Sm) Ap, followed by the pattern of CmTcSmSuApTp, CmTcSmSuApTp nalidixic acid, and CmTcSmSuAp in the decreasing order. The antibiogram of CmTcSmSuTp was found to be the most frequent pattern in S. sonnei. The ratio of conjugal transfer of S. flexneri was 47% and 75% of S. sonnei. The average number of plasmid harboring in Shigella was 4 and the size of plasmid ranged 1.3 to 134 megadalton (Mdal). Most S. flexneri carried plasmids of 2 to 3 Mdal and S. sonnei carried those of 3 to 4 Mdal size. The sizes of conjugative plasmids ranged 40-90 Mdal. The incompatibility group (Inc) F II plasmids (54-59 Mdal) were most frequent and rare Inc B plasmids (60 Mdal) of isolates in 1979 and 1980 and Inc FI (87 Mdal) of 1983 isolates were able to be classified by the colony test with standard reference plasmids. The R plasmids of known Inc group were tested for the restriction endonuclease analysis. The pattern of plasmids digested by EcoRl were apparently different by the Inc group but there was no significant difference between species or by the resistance patterns. Nonconjugative plasmids and their phenotypes were identified by transformation test. The transformants were resistant to less than two drugs. Colicin producing transformants carried the Col plasmid of 3.7 or 3.9 Mdal size. $Ap^r$ plasmids derived from S. sonnei were found to be mobilized by transfer factor RT641 to E. coli #CS100. $Ap^r$ plasm ids of same size shared by S. flexneri, S. sonnei, and E. coli were digested with Pstl. All of them showed two restriction fragments of 2.8 kilobase(kb) and 0.7kb. Other plasmids ($Sm^r\;Su^r$) derived from S. flexneri, S. boydii, and S. sonnei were digested with Pstl and they showed same restriction fragment patterns of 3.1kb and 2.9kb. The plasmid profiles of three strains of S. sonnei producing colicin and showing same resistance pattern of CmTcSmSuApTpKm appeared to be similar. Restriction patterns by EcoRl and the behavior of plasmids in conjugation or transformation process were also similar between those plasmids. The restriction patterns were significantly different between the plasmids of Inc FI group and those of unclassified Inc group.

Salmonella typhi infection, which was the most frequent enteric infection in Korea, has been decreasing, while the infection of other serogroups of Salmonella has been increasing since the later part of 1970s. In 1986, the number of serogroup B isolated by us increased to 46, which corresponds 21.1% of all enteropathogenic bacteria isolated from stool specimens. Salmonella isolates resistant to antimicrobial agents were extremly rare in Korea, in the 1970s. However, 7 of 13 serogroup B isolates showed resistance to ampicillin or to chloramphenicol in 1984. Among the serogroup B isolates in 1986, 71.7% and 69.6% were resistant to ampicillin and to chloramphenicol respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of ampicillin and chloramphenicol against these isolates were >$128\;{\mu}g/ml$ and $128\;{\mu}g/ml$ respectively.

Authors have isolated phages of V. parahaemolyticus from shellfish and investigated some of their characteristics. The results obtained were as follows: Twenty-three phage strains(9.2%) out of 250 specimens were isolated. Plaques of phages were small, clear or turbid and $0.5{\sim}1.5mm$ in diameter. The electron micrographs of K3 phages showed two morphology; one was a hexagonal head about 105nm with a tail about 12nm, the other was a hexagonnal head about 60nm with a tail about 25nm. The host ranges of pahges were limited to V. parahaemolyticus strains and there appeared to be no relationship between the K serotypes of V. parahaemolyticus strains and the host ranges of the phage isolates. The adsorption rate of phages were more than 80% for $10{\sim}15$ minutes, the inactivation rate at $60^{\circ}C$ was more than 99% for $40{\sim}45$ minutes. The pH stability range was between 6.0 and 8.0. The inactivation rate of phages by UV irradiation was more than 99% for $45{\sim}75$ seconds.

In order to determine the virulence properties of eleven strains of Sh. flexneri isolated from diarrheal patients the congo red test, the $Ser{\acute{e}}ny$ test, the HeLa cell invasion test and electrophoresis of plasmids were carried out. The results were summarized as follows. 1. Virulent strains were not determined by the result of Congo red absorption test. 2. Virulent strains showed positive reaction by the Sereny test and the HeLa cells invasion, but avirulent strains revealed negative reaction at those tests. 3. The temperature condition of bacterial growth was a factor of virulent expression. 4. Virulent strains were mostly possessed of a 130.3 Mdal plasmid, but avirulent strains were not.

The result of various researches mainly in search of 194 Shigella strains, isolated by the Health Research Centers(situated in Seoul city, Inchon city, Pusan city, Kyonggi-Do, Kangwon-Do, Chungchongnam and Buk-Do, Kyongsangnam and Buk-Do, Jollanam and Buk-Do, and Jaeju-Do) in addition to those clinical laboratories of all the general hospitals situated down twon Seoul, conducted during the month of Jan. through Dec. 85, through the reisolating-activity program following its transportation into the laboratory, particularly for a complete check on its correctiveness, are as follows: 1. Isolation processes were performed with the 194 strains obtained from each placeduring the period of investigation: 164 Strains(84.5%) of Sh. flexneri, B group; 6 Strains(3.1%) of Sh. boydii, C group; 24 Strains(12.3%) of Sh. sonnei, D group, which means there's quite a lot in B group while Sh. dysenteriae, A group was not isolated at all. 2. The isolation rate of the 164, B group for subserotype was 1b, 84(51.2%) the highest one, 2(1.2%) on 3a the lowest one, 4, on C group; In D group subserotype II showed 14(58.4%) more than subserotype I. 3. The biological data on sexuality regarding the isolation-strain showed traditional particularity. But the subserotype 1b in B group 2(2.4%) showed gas-growth from glucose. In subserotype 1a, the indole-growth was 88.9% on masculine which was considerably a good one. In the test of arginine dihydrolase subserotype I among D group showed 100% masculine rate. The subserotype 6 among B group showed 92.5% masculine. In the dissolution test of manitol, all subserotypes showed 100% maculine except subserotype 1b. In the dissolutioning test of rhamnose, the subserotype I among D group showed 100% masculine which is the unusual one. 4. Interms of the area among 13 districts examined, Kangwon-Do had 41(21.1%) which is the highest one on its ratio. 5. In terms of season on the strain isolation category, 44(22.7%) is the number isolated in April which is the highest one. 6. In terms of ages, the strain isolation ratio was notably high above the ages of 60 which was 34(17.5%). Next one was 29(14.9%) which was under the ages of 4. 7. In terms of sex, female was 113 or 58.2% while male was 74 or 38.2%, which means the female had more than the male. 8. The result of the resisting capability on the usage of 12 antibiotic medication was; 100% on chloramphenicol; 94.3% on tetracycline, 82.0% on streptomycin, 76.3% on carbenicillin, 74.7% on ampicillin, in regular order. The strain source bearing multimedication resisivity against the 5 antibiotic medication is as many as 117 or 60.3%. Of which 43.3% of 1b sub serotype, B group was the best one, and thus the resistivity against the antistrain medication seems the tendency is being changed. The summing up of the above result shows the total specific strains isolated in each branch in Korea is 194, of which the main type is Sh. flexneri 84.5%. The isolating rate is almost evenly spreading, although the Kangwon-Do showed the highest rate on the above data. It also shows female is higher than male on its statistics. The tendency on age category showed both on old and infancy generations high. However, the resistant capability against antibacteria medication or vaccine was still remaining on habitual one, particularly tending towards multimedication or vaccine trend.

When tetracycline resistancy were cured by ethidium bromide treatment, some of the cured strains lost the tetracycline resistance plasmid while other strains kept the plasmids. Both strains of lost and remained plasmids were digested with restriction endonuclease Hind III and these cleaved plasmids were compared with that of parent strains, two plasmid remained strains showed same cleavage patterns between parent and cured strains, however, one plasmid lost strain showed dissimilarity with parent strain, but in the other one strain, among 4 plasmid lost colonies, 2 showed same but other 2 showed different patterns compared to parent strain. Tetracycline was transfered by conjugation in on set(Staphylococcus aureus donor versus Staphylococcus epidermidis, recipient) with relative high frequency but the other 2 sets showed a low degree of frequency and the other 2 sets exhibited no transfer.
