Objectives : Scalenus anticus syndrome and Piriformis syndrome is representative of myogenic Nerve entrapment syndrome, and their clinical symptoms are similar to HIVD(herniated Intervertebral disc) of cervical or lumbar spine. But, distinguished by muscle test, these syndrome apply to Meridian-muscle therapy. Methods : Meridian-muscle therapy consists of Ashi(阿是)-point therapy, taping therapy, myofascial release technique, manipulation, their based on the traditional meridian-muscle theory. This theory is similar to myofascial pain syndrome in western medicine. The study population consisted of 9 patients who were already diagnosed as Nerve entrapment syndrome with radiological examination & physical examination and muscle test. The evaluation of clinical outcome was done by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Pain Assesment Questionnaire(PAQ). Results and Conclusions : After treatment, All patient's VAS is decreased as
$2.11{\pm}1.59$ and the evaluation of clinical effect was excellent(6 cases) or good(3 cases) according to PAQ. Conclusively, Meridian muscle therapy is efficacious against Nerve entrapment syndrome. -
Objective : The therapeutic exercise on low back found In the literatures mostly have adopted methods that are applied to only certain muscles. The purpose of this paper to classify various low pains and to Investigate an active physical treatment can be applied to certain low back pain. Methods : By exploring the journals and medical publications. Results and Conclusions 1. A goal of low back exercise is reinforcement and extension of muscles in order to control pains. 2 Low back exercise which causes the movement of the spinal joint and disk can control pains. 3. Flexion exercise of lumbar spine can be generally applied to any low back pains except kyposis. 4. Extension exercise of lumbar spine can be applied to any low back pains except facet joint syndrome or hyperlordosis. 5. Rotation exercise of lumbar spine can be applied to any low back pains except facet joint syndrome. 6. Lateral bending exercise of lumbar spine can be applied to HNP. facet Joint syndrome, scoliosis.

Objectives : To study the cervical lordosis and disc degeneration in neck pain patients with or without low back pain. Subjects. The study was composed of 57 neck pain patients with low back pain(LBP group) and 40 neck pain patients without low back pain(Non-LBP group). Methods : Radiographic measures of spinal lordosis(cervical and lumbar) and disc degeneration were collected, and statistically analyzed. Results: LBP group showed a significant increase in cervical lordotic angle as compared with Non-LBP group, whereas no significant change in cervical disc degeneration. A relationship was found between cervical and lumbar disc degeneration in LBP
$group({\gamma}-0.3064)$ . Conclusions : The findings from this study suggest that the curvature of the cervical spine is related to the subject's low back pain. -
Objectives : The aim of present study is to estimate clinical outcome of Chuna treatment and Chuna medicine treatment for patients with H.I.V.D(Herniated Intervertebral Disc) of lumbar spine according to the character of patients and the steps of Chuna therapy, and therefore suggest a prospective, desirable Chuna treatment and patient guidance. Methods : We investigated the 258 cases of outpatients who were diagnosed as the H.I.V.D. on lumbar C.T. or MRI and were treated more than seven times with chuna treatment and more than one time with Chuna medicine treatment In Jaseng Oriental Medicine Hospital from September 1, 1999 to December 31, 2000. We evaluated the subjective symptoms by Hudgin's classification. For the sake of the more objective evaluation for before and after treatment, we calculated the Improvement index and ratio of the four parts to estimate the pain and functional disorder In before and after treatment by Macnab's criteria. Results & Conclusion : The improvement index and ratio showed that the conservative therapy with Chuna therapy improved the symptom of H.I.V.D. much effectively, and especially in the patient groups of male, 30-39 years, standing Job, duration of symptom within one week, the 4th step of chuna treatment, the first step of chuna medicine treatment, and the excellent satisfactory assessment of Chuna treatment. Therefore, it is supposed that the conservative therapy with Chuna therapy and patient guidance should be much actively continued.

We reviewed literatures of western and oriental medicine about postoperative management of spine. Traditionally, with orthoses and bed rest, many physicians restricted activity of daily life and back exercises of patients who had taken spine surgery. More aggressive early mobilization, however, such as strengthening exercise and stretching after 4 weeks of surgery gets grounds nowadays. Physical therapies including manipulation, TENS, MENS, ultrasound and cryotherapy are being used as helpful treatment modalities of postoperative pain and swelling. Failed back surgery syndrome occurs due to wrong patient, diagnosis and surgery and is managed with conservative treatment or reoperation. In oriental medicine, treatments of musculoskeletal injuries including surgical wound are based on the balance of chi(氣) and blood(血).

Objectives The present study retrospectively investigated clinical outcome of patients with structual scoliosis during Chuna treatment. Methods : The study population consisted of 34 patients(14 patients of adolescent and 20 patients of adult) who were diagnosised as scoliosis with radiological finding. All patients were treated with Chuna treatment, and after treatment, evaluated with radiological measurement by calculating the scoliosis correction angle from the Initial and follow-up spine AP and lateral views. Also the evaluation of clinical outcome was done twice pre and post treatment during this study. Results : The results were summarized as follows ; 1) The 85.3 percent of patients complained physical pain. and adult group had various painful lesion compared with adolescent group. 2) Adult group had treated
$18.0{\pm}7.2$ times and adolescent group treated$13.5{\pm}5.7$ times with Chuna treatment. 3) Scoliotic angle is reduced in 92.9 percent of adolescent group and had all of adult group after Chuna treatment, especially, statistically significance appeared in adult group. 4) Adult group was superior to adolescent group in correctability and scoliotic angle change. 5) Correction effect was better in the group which initial scoliotic angle was lessor, or had more time of treatment. 6) According to grade of vertebral body rotation, scoliotic angle is larger and correctability was lower. Conclusions : Chuna treatment was efficacious against scoliosis. And it is necessary for adolescent scoliosis patient to be more carefully treated and observed. -
Objectives : The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between spinal distortion and pain in elementary and middle school students. Methods : Using the phase-shifting moire developed by KAIST(Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) we measured the back surface distortion, and using questionnaire investigation, we investigated the partial pain in 1008 elementary and middle school students(532 boy students(52.8%), 476 girl students(47.2%)) in Seoul in 1999. And, we statistically analyzed the relationship between spinal distortion and partial body pain Results : This study show that the more age increase, the more the pain in head, neck, shoulder, back and low back Increase considerably among the students aged 9 to 15. The ratio of each partial body pain was 28.4%, 19.7%, 18.2%, 18.7%. 16.0% at the age of 9 and 59.7%, 67.4%, 51.8%, 51.8%, 64.4% at the age of 15 respectively. And, it was shown there was a significant correlation between spine distortion and partial body pain area. When the spinal distortion was found at the upper thoracic and cervical area, the students complained the more pain on head, neck and shoulder(p<0.05) and when the spinal distortion was found at the sacral base, the more headache(p<0.05) Conclusions : It is suggested that the significant correlation exist between the spinal distortion and pain and the pain related to spine disorder get more increase as students grow. We have to study further more about Juvenile postural distortion and it's prevention.

Objectives and Methods : To evaluate the mechanism of oxidative damage by xanthine oxydase(XO) and hypoxanthine(HX)-induced oxygen radicals, MTT assay and NR assay were carried out after the cultured mouse spinal sensory neurons were preincubated for 4 hours with various concentrations of XO/HX. And the amount of total protein. neurofilament EIA. lipid peroxidation and LDH activity were measured, to evaluate the protective effect of Herbar Chelidonii(HC) water extract on cultured spinal sensory neurons damaged by XO/HX. after the cultured mouse spinal sensory neurons were preincubated with various concentrations of HC water extract for 3 hours prior to exposure of XO/HX. Results : XO/HX decreased significantly the survival rate of the cultured mouse sensory neurons by NR assay and MTT assay In proportion to concentration and exposed time. In proportion to concentration and exposed time on cultured spinal sensory neurons, XO/HX showed the quantitative decrease of neurofilament by EIA. the decrease of total protein amount by SRB assay and the Increase of lipid peroxidation as well as LDH. HC showed the quantitative increase of neurofilament and total protein, but showed the decrease of lipid peroxidation and LDH activity against the neurotoxicity of XO/HX. Conclusions : From the above results, it is concluded that XO/HX have a neurotoxic effect on cultured spinal sensory neurons and that the herbs extract, such as HC, prevent the toxicity of XO/HX effectively in that they decrease lipid peroxidation and LDH activity.
