Purpose: Addressing current status of nursing handoff provides information as to where to change practice for improvement in patient care. The aim of this study was to develop nursing a handoff practice guideline and standardsfor Korean hospitals. Methods: A questionnaire was used to collect data in a cross-sectional survey with 207 head nurses and 697 nurses working in general hospitals. Results: The practice guideline consisted of 2 items on purpose of handoff, 5 items on policy, 3 on environment, 5 on process, 7 on content, 3 on evaluation, and 1 on the function of education, for a total 26 of items. Standard instruction was developed related to Patients, Assessment, Situation, Safety concerns, Background, Actions, and Recommendations. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that the guideline can be applied in real nursing practice to improve the effectiveness of handoff procedures. It can be used to guide nurses to follow the standardized content, which presents patient details clearly. The guideline provides consistency and structure for the information that is handed over.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify nurse's intention to keep current job in the hospital. Methods: Data were collected from 1,143 nurse's working in over 300 beds hospital. The questionnaire with 47 items was developed by researchers to measure nurse's intention to keep his/her current nursing job in hospital. The questionnaire was developed through a focus group interview asking nurse's about their work experiences and literature review, and validated by researchers. Using descriptive statistics, data were analyzed in frequency and severity of nurse's intention to keep nursing job. The Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ of the questionnaire was .906. Results: The mean score of nurse's intention to keep current nursing job was 2.66. The highest mean scores of item of nurse's intention to keep nursing job was "as a nurse it is my duty to help others" ($3.19{\pm}0.45$), and the lowest was "the rotating shift helps me doing housework and raise for my kids" ($1.77{\pm}0.64$). And there are significant differences between period of working (F=9.71, p<.001), current position (F=5.91, p<.001), educational level (F=13.44, p<.001), and impulse experience of changing a job (F=71.20, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study showed possibilities to develop programs for heightening the pride of professional nurse and increasing nurse's intention to keep nursing job in order to increase nurse's professional satisfaction and achievement.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of preoperative education about patient controlled analgesia (PCA) on postoperative pain control for elderly after total knee arthroplasty. Methods: The study applied a quasi-experimental design. To prevent communication between experimental group and control groups, data from control group were collected before provision of preoperative education for the experimental group. A total of 50 elderly patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty and older than 65 years old participated in this study. The preoperative education about PCA was provided for the experimental group before surgery. The preoperative education program consisted of fifteen minute education about pain control, and PCA use, as well as demonstration of PCA use. Results: The experimental group had higher knowledge score about pain and PCA use, and more positive attitudes toward pain and use of analgesics after surgery than the control group. There was no significant difference in use of additional analgesics after surgery between the two groups. The experimental group had significantly lower pain score at 8, 24 and 36 hours after surgery than the control group. The experimental group had higher level of satisfaction about PCA use than the control group. Conclusion: The preoperative education about PCA, customized for elderly patients could be an effective nursing intervention for postoperative pain control after total knee arthroplasty.

Purpose: This study was done to develop an evidence-based nursing clinical practice guideline (PU CPG) for pressure ulcer prevention and management in Korea. Methods: The guideline adaptation process was used and conducted according to the guideline adaptation manual developed by Gu et al. (2012) which consists of three main phases and 9 modules including a total of 24 steps. Results: The newly developed PU CPG included the introduction, pressure ulcers, summary of recommendations, recommendations, references, appendices, and glossary. The total number of recommendations was 148 in 4 sections (organizational policy, assessment, pressure ulcer prevention and management, and education) and 16 domains. Of the recommendations 4.7% were graded A, 16.9%, B, and 78.4%, C. Conclusion: Results indicate that this new PU CPG is an evidence-based practice guidance for pressure ulcer prevention and management and can be recommended for dissemination and utilization by nurses nationwide to improve the quality of pressure ulcer prevention and management. Regular revision is recommended.

Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between drug-related knowledge, sick role behavior and quality of life of patients on wafarin therapy in an outpatient unit. Methods: The participants were 122 patients. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation. Results: The Duration of wafarin averaged $28.80{\pm}32.99$ months, and 78.7% of participants remembered their blood coagulation value. The mean score for drug-related knowledge was 11.32 points out of a possible 13 points. Sick role behavior of the patients showed a moderate value with a mean of 49.83 points out of 68 points. The mean score for quality of life was rather low at 104.43 out of 175. Drug-related knowledge was significantly correlated to sick role behavior (r=0.39, p<.001), but the relationship between sick role behavior and quality of life was not significant. Also drug-related knowledge was not significantly correlated with quality of life. Conclusion: The resultsindicate that there is a need to enhance the level of drug-related knowledge in order to increase positive behavior as part of the sick role of these patients and thus improve quality of life.

Purpose: Purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing forensic nursing performance role of Emergency Department(ED) nurses. Methods: The study was conducted with 120 ED nurses from Busan. Data were collected during July, 2013 and analyzed using SPSS Win 19.0 program. Results: There were positive correlations between awareness of the forensic nursing role and forensic interest (r=.29, p=.001), between awareness of the forensic nursing role and forensic nursing performance role (r=.54, p<.001), and between forensic experience and forensic nursing performance role (r=.26, p=.004). Awareness of forensic nursing role (${\beta}=.50$, p<.001) and experience in forensics (${\beta}=.24$, p<.001) were significant predictors of forensic nursing role performance and explained 35.9% of the variance. Conclusion: To improve forensic experience, medical institutions should provide education and training for ED nurses to increase their indirect experience. Periodic assessment should also be done. Nurses with training assigned to the ED will enhance the forensic nursing role performance.

Purpose: This study was done to identify conditions of cancer patients who visited an emergency department (ED) with the side effects of chemotherapy. Methods: Data were collected retrospectively from medical records of 294 cancer patients who visited a tertiary hospital in 2009 for treatment of side effects of chemotherapy. Records were reviewed for characteristics of participants and side effects of chemotherapy. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. Results: ED Triage grade 3 was 81.6%. The hospitalization ratio was 72.8%, and 6.5% died during the admission. Most frequent side effects were thrombocytopenia (80.6%), anemia (74.5%), pain (52.0%), neutropenia (50.7%), and leucopenia (46.3%). The hospitalization group showed more severe leucopenia than the discharge group (p=.020). Patients in the group who died had higher scores for dyspnea compared to patients discharged or hospitalized (p<.05). Conclusion: Results of the study suggest that there is a special need to develop a system to manage side effects of chemotherapy. Also it is necessary to provide appropriate care and treatment with prompt initial evaluation when cancer patients with side effects of chemotherapy present in the ED. More effective educational discharge programs should also be developed to help these patients cope with various side effects of chemotherapy.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a nursing intervention program for rehabilitation inpatients and to evaluate the effects of the program on depression, motivation and self-efficacy. Methods: The study was conducted using a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. Participants were rehabilitation inpatients, 27 patients in the control group and 20 in the experimental group. Data were collected from May to November, 2012. Questionnaires were completed three times (pretest, 5 days, 10 days) Final data for 40 patients were analyzed, 23 patients in the control group and 17 in the experimental group. Data were analyzed using $x^2-test$, t-test, and repeated measure ANOVA. Results: Depression in the experimental group decreased compared to the control group, but it was not significant. Motivation for the experimental group changed significantly (F=3.90, p=.029) and self-efficacy increased, but not significantly (F=0.59, p=.559) Conclusion: Results of this study indicate that nursing intervention programs for rehabilitation inpatients could be useful to decrease depression and to improve motivation and self-efficacy.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of foot bath therapy on operating room (OR) nurses' lower extremities edema, stress, and fatigue. Methods: This study used a randomized control group non-synchronized design. The data were collected from August to October 2013, and a total of 50 OR nurses in an university hospital in U Metropolitan City participated in the study: 25 nurses for the experimental group and 25 for the control group. The experimental group received foot bath in which feet were soaked in $40^{\circ}C$ water and immersed up to ankle line for 20 minutes per a day for 12 times. Results: There were significant decrease in the calf edema, physical stress, and fatigue between pre and post foot bath therapy. Conclusion: The findings of this study show that foot bath had the effect in decreasing lower extremities edema, stress, and fatigue among OR nurses. Foot bath therapy, therefore, is suggested as a comfort and easy-to-use method in clinical setting to reduce OR nurses' lower extremities edema, stress, and fatigue.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of drinking water on the change in blood pressure after spinal surgery. Methods: A quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group, pretest and posttest design was employed. Subjects were consisted of 40 elderly patients who underwent spine surgery (20 in the experimental group, 20 in the control group). Data were collected from May 9th to September 30th, 2013. The experimental design involved patients drinking 400 mL of water in 5 mins after surgery and the blood pressure was measured in a standing position following the first 30 minutes after surgery. Control group received the same treatment and care as experimental group, except for the water intake. Data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 19.0 for $x^2-test$, t-test and independent t-test. Results: Experimental group with water intake demonstrated a significant higher level of systolic blood pressure compared to the control group (t=9.065, p=.005), but showed a non-significant level of diastolic blood pressure. Conclusion: This study indicates that water intake can be utilized as a useful nursing intervention to monitor changes in systolic blood pressure in elderly patients after spinal surgery.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate symptom clusters experienced by patients on hemodialysis and to identify relations between symptom clusters and quality of life. Methods: Data were collected from 127 patients at 10 local hemodialysis clinics. Symptoms were measured using 10-item physical symptom checklist as well as the Hospital Anxiety depression Scale. Quality of life was measured with the Satisfaction with Life Scale. Data were analyzed using factor analysis, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The most frequently reported symptoms included fatigue, itching, depression, numbness/tingling, and insomnia. Four distinct symptom clusters were identified: cluster 1 was comprised of dry mouth, headache, nausea (gastrointestinal); cluster 2 of decreased appetite, insomnia (basic need); cluster 3 of itching, numbness/tingling (sensory-comfort); and cluster 4 of fatigue, depression (mood-vitality). Among the clusters, the 'basic need' cluster and 'mood-vitality' cluster had a significant negative association with quality of life. The 'mood-vitality' cluster, explained 17.4% of the variance in quality of life. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that comprehensive symptom assessment provides better symptom management for patients on hemodialysis. Further studies are needed to verify symptom clusters identified in this study.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and apply a video dietary instruction program for hemodialysis patients to understand dietary compliance as well as the effect on the physiological indicator. Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study of a nonequivalent control group pre-post test design. Data were collected from August 6, 2012 to January 10, 2013. Twenty patients were assigned to an experimental group and twenty-one patients were assigned to a control group. A video dietary instruction program was developed and applied only to the experimental group once a week for a total of 8 weeks. Dietary compliance and physiological indicators were subsequently measured. Results: Dietary compliance was improved in both groups over time. There was no significant change in the physiological indicator value in both groups, indicating that there was no correlation between the treatment type and time. Conclusion: The video dietary instruction program could not make a statistically significant change on the physiological indicator value of the experimental group; however, this change was maintained within the allowable limits. Therefore, the video dietary instruction program can be utilized continuously as a standardized nursing intervention program in order to maintain the dietary compliance of hemodialysis patients.
