A Study of masculinity in Oh Jeong Hee's Novels

오정희 소설의 남성성 연구

This study is a study of masculinity in Oh Jung Hee‘s Novel. Thestudy of Oh Jeong - hee 's work was mainly focused on ‘femininity’ inthe aspect of gender argumentation. The study, which is limited tofemininity, or which focuses only on femininity, neglects the aspect ofmasculinity, thereby allowing the writer to look at the realm of humannature inquiry without looking at it in a narrow sense. Therefore, thisstudy examined the masculinity of Oh, Jung - Hee 's novels in order tobroaden the scope of gender debate on the works.Since Oh Jung - hee implements his works by paying attention tothe inner conscious world of characters rather than external events orbehaviors, he is confronted with the difficulty of interpretation as apoisoning method when encountering general narrative literature.Therefore, in order to deeply understand Oh Jeong-hee's novel, anin-depth understanding through the consideration of the innerconsciousness of the character should be accompanied. Oh Jung-hee'swork is ultimately inspired by the literary essence of "a review ofhuman nature."In this study, I investigated the studies on masculinity and appliedmasculinity theory to study masculinity in Oh Jung Hee Novel. Themasculinity of Oh Jung Hee's novel is not a contrast to femininity buthas meaning as another gender, and it reflects the orientation of OhJeong - hee toward the essence of life and the quest for identity.

이 연구는 오정희 소설에 나타난 남성성에 대한 연구이다. 오정희 작품에 대한 연구는 젠더 논의적 측면에서 주로 ‘여성성’에 편중되어 있었다. 여성성에 국한되거나 여성성에만 무게를 둔 연구는 남성성의 측면을 간과하게 함으로써 작가가 나타내려는 인간 본질 탐구의 영역을 고루 보지 못하게 하고 편협한 시각으로 바라보게 한다. 따라서 본고는 오정희 작품에 대한 젠더 논의의 범위를 넓히고자 오정희 소설에 나타난 남성성에 대해 고찰하였다. 오정희는 외부적 사건이나 행동보다는 인물의 내면의식 세계에 주목하여 작품을 구현하고 있으므로 일반적인 서사문학을 접할 때의 독법으로는 해석의 난해함에 직면하게 된다. 따라서 오정희 소설의 깊이 있는 이해를 위해서는 인물의 내면의식 세계 고찰을 통한 심층적인 이해가 수반되어야 할 것이다. 주지하듯이 오정희 작품은 궁극적으로는 ‘인간의 본성에 대한 고찰’이라는 문학적 본질에 깊게 천착하고 있다. 이를 위해 작가는 어린아이부터 중년의 여성, 노인까지 다양한 삶들을 여성적 시각에서 예리하게 형상화함으로써 그 진면모를 드러낸다. 마찬가지로 남성인물들을 통해서도 작가의 삶에 대한 진지한 성찰을 읽을 수 있다. 본고에서는 남성성에 대한 이론적 연구들을 살펴보고 몇몇 논의에 기대어 오정희 소설에 나타난 남성성에 대해 연구하였다. 이를 통해 오정희 소설에서 주로 다루어졌던 여성성과 더불어, 남성을 통해 바라보는 인간 존재에 대한 작가적 탐구와 주제의식의 구현 양상을 확인할 수 있었다. 오정희 소설 속 남성성은 여성성에 대비된 개념이 아니라 또 다른 젠더로서 의미를 가지며, 이는 삶의 본질과 정체성 탐구를 향한 작가적 지향의 반영임을 알 수 있다.
