Others Named Robot and Uncany, Divine Violence in North Korean Science Fiction

북한 과학환상문학에 나타난 로봇이라는 타자와 언캐니 그리고 신적 폭력

The purpose of this study was to investigate the otherness of robotsin North Korean science fiction. Robots make fr quent appearances inscience novels as materials since they are both interesting andreproduce the pending issues of society including aliens, minorities,monsters, and gender. In North Korean science fiction, robots exhibitthose universal qualities and also have peculiar aspects. In North Koreanscience fiction, robots are internal others born in the North Koreansociety, wher as aliens are external others. Those works depict a Utopiabased on robots, but ther is strong anxiety and fear for robotssuppressed behind them. An uncanny feeling is, in particular, caused inthe aspect that ther is an attempt to bring down the suppressedhierarchy between the creators and their creations behind the externalsimilarity. Furthermore, the overturn of hierarchy expands to divineviolence. Excessive passion about scientific technologies and robotsdrives robots into a violent state of making everything nihil. They areoriginally programmed to serve the mankind, but their massive violencebrings people to their end. The North Korean works put an emphasis onstrict hierarchy and "conscience" to put down such anxiety. NorthKorean science fiction has a compulsive aspect of emphasizing hierarchyand conscience constantly and repetitively in order to prevent thesuppressed from returning.

본 논문의 목적은 북한과학환상문학에 나타난 로봇의 타자성을 밝히는 있다. 과학소설에서 로봇은 매주 빈번하게 만나는 소재이다. 로봇이 주는 흥미성뿐만 아니라 이방인, 소수자, 괴물, 젠터 등 사회적 현안들을 재현하는 경우가 많기 때문이다. 북한 과학환상문학에서도 로봇은 이러한 보편적 성격들을 보여주고 있으면서 동시에 특이점도 지니고 있다. 북한 과학환상문학에서 외계인이 외부의 타자라면 로봇은 북한 사회가 잉태한 내부의 타자이다. 이들 작품은 로봇을 통한 유토피아를 말하고 있지만 이면에는 로봇에 대한 강한 불안과 두려움이 억압되어 있다. 특히 외형적 유사성 이면에 억압된 창조자와 피조물 간의 위계를 붕괴하려는 측면에서 언캐니한 감정을 부여한다. 뿐만 아니라 위계의 전복은 다시 신적폭력으로 확대된다. 과학기술과 로봇에 대한 과잉열정은 로봇으로 하여금 모든 것을 무화시키는 폭력적 상태로 몰아간다. 인간을 위해 봉사하도록 프로그래밍이 도리어 인간에게 파국을 안겨주는 거대한 폭력으로 돌아오는 것이다. 북한의 작품들은 이러한 불안을 억압하기 위해 엄격한 위계와 ‘량심’을 강조한다. 억압된 것의 귀환을 막기 위해 끝임없이 위계와 양심을 반복적으로 강조해야 하는 강박증자의 모습이 북한의 과학환상문학인 것이다.
