Abstract

Archaeological relics excavated in the historic urban core of Seoul had been regarded as unpredictable variables for urban redevelopment projects. Since the mid-2000s, however there have been attempts to recognize those excavated relics more sensitively in spatial planning practices. This study explores the seven such cases, i.e. Cheongjin 6 distric, Jongno Lemeilleur; Jongno2town40, Yuguijeon Building; Pagoda Academy Jongno Tower; Dongdaemun History & Culture Park; Seorin area 19 district; Junghak District, the K-twin Tower; and Cheongjin area 12-16 district, the Grand Seoul Building Development Project. The goal of this study is to find out recent trends in promoting the excavated relics in urban redevelopment projects' public space designs in historic urban cores of Seoul. The seven cases are analyzed in terms of backgrounds and processes of excavation. characteristics of relics, and the results of their conservation and utilization. Seven cases largely represent two types as for their conservation characters, which are 'relocating and restoring in other site' and 'restoring or reconstructing on-site.' Features of excavation remains and urban contexts are diverse, but a most uniformly carried out method is 'to put protective glass on display in the public space'. This approach results from two viewpoints of cultural property conservation, one of which is the a conservation principle of minimizing damages on heritage, while the other of which is a development rule of minimizing time and expenses.
