  • Early zoeal stages of two snapping shrimps Alpheus digitalis De Haan, 1850 and Alpheus japonicus Miers, 1879 are described and illustrated in detail for the first time based on the laboratory-reared materials. The first zoeas of Alpheus are more related to those of Vexillipar than to Athanas, Automate, and Synalpheus by having rostrum absent, the tip of the endopod of the antenna with a long plumose seta as well as a spine, the endopod of the maxilla with a basal and two terminal setae, the exopod of the maxilla shorter than the endopod, and the endopod of the second maxilliped with a seta on the proximal segment. A list of larval descriptions and described stages of the Alpheidae reported from Indo-West Pacific waters are included.

  • Nine zoeal stages of Lysmata vittata (Stimpson, 1860) are described from laboratory-reared material. The ornamentation of the carapace and the fifth abdominal somite readily distinguish the first zoeas of L. vittata from the two previously known first larvae of Lysmata (L. anchisteus and L. seticaudata). Larval characters of the genus Lysmata are summarized. The setation of 1,2,3(6) on the basis of the second maxilliped indicates that Lysmata is closely related to Exhippolysmata.

  • The complete larval development of Rhinolithodes wosnessenskii Brandt, 1848 is described, based on laboratory rearing. The species has four zoeal stages and a megalopa. The zoeas of R. wosnessenskii are readily distinguished from all other described zoeas of the subfamily Lithodinae by having a middorsal spine of the posterior margin of the carapace.

  • The first zoea of Eriphia sebana is described and illustrated in detail for the first time. Its morphological characteristics are compared with those of other known species of the Menippidae from the northwestern Pacific Ocean. The general morphology of it corresponds well with other known zoeas of the Menippidae, except that of Sphaerozius nitidus. It is found that the zoeas of E. sebana and E. smithi can be separated by the exopod of the antenna, which has three setae in E. sebana and four setae in E. smithi.

  • The first three zoeal stages of fat-handed snapping shrimp Synalpheus tumodomanus (Paulson, 1875) are described and illustrated in detail based on laboratory-reared material. Morphological comparison is made with previous description of S. tumidomanus from Indian waters. Three segmented scale of the antenna and the length of the endopod of antenna readily distinguish the first zoeas of S. tumidomanus from those of S. neomeris, the other known species of the genus Synalpheus from Korea.

  • Zoeas of Leptomithrax edwardsii were reared in the laboratory. Two zoeal stages are described and illustrated. The first zoeal stage of L. edwardsii is compared with those of seven known species of the family Majidae. It differs from previous description in the endopodal setation characters of the maxillule and the second maxilliped. It appears most similar to L. bifidus and Schizophroida simodaensis of the northwestern Pacific. A provisional key for identifying eight majid zoeas is included.

  • Novactaea pulchella was reared in the laboratory, from hatching to the megalopal stage at $25^{\circ}C$. The larval stage of it consists of two zoeal and one megalopal stages. The first zoea of the present study differs from that described by Terada (1990) in the setal presence of the carapace, the maxilla and the maxilliped, and the lateral process on the abdominal somite. It is reported for the first time that brachyuran zoeas belonging to a species share two types of lateral processes on the abdominal somites. They are either on the abdominal somites 2 and 3 or on abdominal somites 2 to 5. A provisional key is provided to aid the identification of the actaeine zoeas in Korea and the adjacent waters.

  • The first zoeal stage of Pagurus japonicus is described and illustrated. Its morphological characteristics are compared with of other species of the genus Pagurus. The first zoea of P. japonicus was very similar to that of P. similis. The zoeas of the two species could be distinguished from other pagurid zoeas by morphological characteristics of the carapace without posterolateral spine. two setae on the endopod of the antenna, and 3+3 setae on the endopod of the maxilla. They show affinities more to the species of the family Diogenidae than to the species of the genus Pagurus in respect of zoeal morphology.
