  • Zirconium alloy cladding tube specimens were irradiated at $380^{\circ}C$ up to a fast neutron fluence of $7.5{\times}10^{24}n/m^2$ in a research reactor to investigate the effect of neutron irradiation on hydride reorientation and mechanical property degradation. Cool-down tests from $400^{\circ}C$ to $200^{\circ}C$ under 150 MPa tensile hoop stress were performed. These tests indicate that the irradiated specimens generated a smaller radial hydride fraction than did the unirradiated specimens and that higher hydrogen content generated a smaller radial hydride fraction. The irradiated specimens of 500 ppm-H showed smaller ultimate tensile strength and plastic strain than those characteristics of the 250 ppm-H specimens. This mechanical property degradation caused by neutron irradiation can be explained by tensile hoop stress-induced microcrack formation on the hydrides in the irradiation-damaged matrix and subsequent microcrack propagation along the hydrides and/or through the matrix.

  • Zr, Cu, Zn and Fe-pyrithione complexes were prepared in aqueous medium and their antimicrobial activities were evaluated by MIC and cylinder plate methods against Bacillus subtilis, Sarcina lutea, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Candida albicans, Asperillus niger and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Zr-pyrithione possessed most potent activities among the metal complexes against a wide range of microorganisms, especially Gram positive, B. subtilis, S. aureus and fungus, C. albicans. And all of the metal complexes synthesized were more active than pyrithione base. Fe(III)-pyrithione complex has an equal potency to Zn-pyrithione in general but it showed potent activity against B. subtilis microorganism than Zn-pyrithione.

  • Zirconium oxide films have been synthesized by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering deposition on n-Si(001) substrate with metal zirconium target at variant $O_2$ partial pressures. The influences of $O_2$ partial pressures of the morphology, deposition rate, microstructure, and the dielectric constant of $ZrO_2$ have been discussed. The results show that deposition rate of $ZrO_2$ films decreases, the roughness, and the thickness of the native $SiO_2$ interlayer increases with the increase of $O_2$ partial pressure. $ZrO_2$ films synthesized at low $O_2$ partial pressure are amorphous and monoclinic polycrystalline in nanometer scale at low $O_2$ partial pressure. The relative dielectrics of $ZrO_2$ films are in the range of 12 to 25.

  • Ammonia gas was blown into the solution of zirconium ion to induce precipitation of supersaturated zirconium ion at gas-liquid interface with increase in pH. The influence of pH on the phase and particle size of precipitate and calcined powders has been investigated. At pH 4.5 of zirconium solution, maximum yield of 98.7% was obtained. Above pH 4.5, there was no more increase of yield. Above pH 5.5, large aggregates consisting of primary particles were observed in precipitate and calcined powders. At pH 4.5, almost aggregate-free fine spherical zirconia powders were obtained.

  • The metalliding technique was adopted to obtain the diffusion coating of zirconium on AISI 304 Stainless Steel in molten mixed chlorides (32.9wt.%LICl-34.8wt.%NaCl-32.3wt.%). Experiments were carried out in argon gas atmosphere. The electrolytic cell was consisted of a AISI 304 Stainless steel cathode and a consumable zirconium anode. The quality of deposit was analysed by SEM, Optical Microscope, EDS, and also examined by the Micro-Vickers hardness and corrosion tests. Interface of deposit layer was identified as zirconium-iron alloy layer caused by diffusion process at elevated temperatures. The optimum condition for the metalliding was found to be the bath temperature of $550^{\circ}C$, the concentration of $K_2ZrF_6$ ,5wt.%, cathodic current derrent density of 7.0 to 10.0mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ , and anodic current density of 2.0mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

  • Zirconium oxynitride films were obtained by r.f. reactive magnetron sputtering of a zirconium target with nitrogen flow rate ranging from 0 to 60 sccm. The phases present in the films were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Measurements of the oxidation state $ZrON_x$ films were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Thickness of these samples was estimated by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We found that the surface morphology of $ZrON_x$ films measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM) was also depended on the nitrogen gas flow.

  • Among the explosives in ammunition, the delay elements, which are used as a retardant, could be influenced by the ambient temperature in the Republic of Korea, where the highest and lowest average annual temperature difference is clear. On the other hand, there has been no domestic research on this. This study examined the linear burning rates of the zirconium-nickel delay elements depending on the ambient temperature in South Korea. The ambient temperature data of South Korea were obtained from the meteorological administration, which was used to set the experimental conditions. The operational time for the K414 fuze was measured by changing the ambient temperature by 10 ℃ from -40 ℃ to 50 ℃. To convert the delay time into the burning rates, the height of the delay element in the K414 fuze body was used. The results indicated that the characteristics of the burning rates for the zirconium-nickel delay element could be estimated as linear, and both the burning rates and the delay time of the zirconium-nickel delay element were 2.73mm/ms and -4.18ms, respectively. This led to an approximately 80 ms delay time difference in the environment where the highest and lowest average annual temperature difference was above 20 ℃. Therefore, the delay time reflecting the ambient temperature should be considered when the test evaluation criteria of zirconium-nickel delay elements are established.
