Finite elements based on isoparametric formulation are known to suffer spurious stiffness properties and corresponding stress oscillations, even when care is taken to ensure that completeness and continuity requirements are enforced. This occurs frequently when the physics of the problem requires multiple strain components to be defined. This kind of error, commonly known as locking, can be circumvented by using reduced integration techniques to evaluate the element stiffness matrices instead of the full integration that is mathematically prescribed. However, the reduced integration technique itself can have a further drawback - rank deficiency, which physically implies that spurious energy modes (e.g., hourglass modes) are introduced because of reduced integration. Such instability in an existing stiffness matrix is generally detected by means of an eigenvalue test. In this paper we show that a knowledge of the dimension of the solution space spanned by the column vectors of the strain-displacement matrix can be used to identify the instabilities arising in an element due to reduced/selective integration techniques a priori, without having to complete the element stiffness matrix formulation and then test for zero eigenvalues.

The nanoparticle-agglomerates are synthesized by laser ablation, which have the morphology of dendrite structure. The filtration performance of a conventional micron-fibrous metal filter was improved by adhering nanoparticle-agglomerates onto the filter surface. The Sintered-Nanoparticle-Agglomerates-adhered Filter (SNAF) adhered with nanostructured material was made by heat treatment after deposition of nanoparticle-agglomerates sintered in aerosol phase onto the micron-fibrous metal filter. As the sintering temperature increases, the pressure drop of the filter increases a little but the filtration efficiency increases remarkably. This is due to increase of surface area of nanoparticle-agglomerates adhered onto the micron-fibrous metal filter.

Modern electrochemical energy devices involve generation and reduction of fuel gases through electrochemical reactions of water splitting, alcohol oxidation, oxygen reduction, etc. Initially, these processes were executed in the presence of noble metal-based catalyst that showed low overpotential and high current density. However, its high cost, unavailability, corrosion and related toxicity limited its application. The search for alternative with high stability, durability, and efficiency led scientists towards carbon nanoparticles supported catalysts which has high surface area, good electrical conductivity, tunable morphology, low cost, ease of synthesis and stability. Carbon nanoparticles are classified into two groups based on morphology, one and zero dimensional particles. Carbon nanoparticles at zero dimension, denoted as carbon dots, are less used carbon support compared to other forms. However, recently carbon dots with improved electronic properties have become popular as catalyst as well as catalyst support. This review focused on the recent advances in electrocatalytic activities of carbon dots. The mechanisms of common electrocatalytic reactions and the role of the catalysts are also discussed. The review also proposed future developments and other research directions to overcome current limitations.
In the research of speech recognition, locating the beginning and end of a speech utterance in a background of noise is of great importance. Since the background noise presenting to record will introduce disturbance while we just want to get the stationary parameters to represent the corresponding speech section, in particular, a major source of error in automatic recognition system of isolated words is the inaccurate detection of beginning and ending boundaries of test and reference templates, thus we must find potent method to remove the unnecessary regions of a speech signal. The conventional methods for speech endpoint detection are based on two simple time-domain measurements - short-time energy, and short-time zero-crossing rate, which couldn't guarantee the precise results if in the low signal-to-noise ratio environments. This paper proposes a novel approach that finds the Lyapunov exponent of time-domain waveform. This proposed method has no use for obtaining the frequency-domain parameters for endpoint detection process, e.g. Mel-Scale Features, which have been introduced in other paper. Comparing with the conventional methods based on short-time energy and short-time zero-crossing rate, the novel approach based on time-domain Lyapunov Exponents(LEs) is low complexity and suitable for Digital Isolated Word Recognition System.
It is necessary for the numerical simulation of 3-dimensional incompressible isotropic decaying turbulence to construct 3-dimensional initial velocity field which resembles the fully developed turbulence. Although the previous velocity field generation method proposed by Rogallo(1981) satisfies continuity equation and 3-dimensional energy spectrum, it has limitation, as indicated in his paper, that it does not produce the higher velocity moments(e. g. velocity derivative skewness) characteristic of real turbulence. In this study, a new velocity field generation method which is able to control velocity derivative skewness of initial velocity field is proposed. Brief descriptions of the new method and a few parameters which is used to control velocity derivative skewness are given. A large eddy simulation(LES) of isotropic decaying turbulence using dynamic subgrid-scale model is carried out to evaluate the performance of the initial velocity field generated by the new method. It was shown that the resolved turbulent kinetic energy decay curve and the resolved enstrophy decay curve from the initial field of new method were more realistic than those from the initial field of Rogallo's method. It was found that the dynamic model coefficient from the former was initially half the stationary value and experienced relatively short transition period, though that from the latter was initially zero and experienced relatively longer transition period.

In this thesis, improved full wave mode ZVT(Zero-Voltage-Transition) PMW DC-DC Converters are presented to maximize the regeneration ratio of resonant energy by only putting an additional diode In series with the auxiliary switch. The operation of the auxiliary switch in a half wave mode makes it possible soft switching operation of all switches including the auxiliary switch whereas it is turned off with hard switching in conventional converter. The increase of the regeneration ratio to resonant energy results in low commutation losses and minimum voltage and current stresses. The operation principles of the improved ZVT PWM DC-DC Converters are theoretically analyzed using the boost converter topology as an example. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results verify the validity of the PWM boost converter topology with the improved full wave mode ZVT PWM converters.

In this paper, stable and robust dynamic walking for a biped motion is proposed. To success this objective, the following structures are processed. In this paper, the proposed control method is one that adjusts actual zero moment position to move to the closest possible point in the stable area instead of following desired zero moment position. This minimizes energy consumption with the smallest joint movements. The proposed control method makes mechanical energy that drives lower limb of the bipedal robot efficient. In this paper, walking experiment is carried out with the three control structures mentioned above. The trajectory generated by off-line is illustrated by performing to walking on flat ground. experiment with an obstacle whose height is lower than that of trajectory is executed to validate dynamic motion.

Various laser systems have been widely used in almost all industrial technologies because they have high energy density, directivity and coherence. Recently the clinical application is becoming wider in medical parts such as incurable disease, diagnosis and so on. Generally, ruby laser beam has the greatest efficacy for removing tattoos, freckle and other skin problem. But current medical ruby laser system has the maximum repetition rate of 2Hz and optical output beam energy of 1J. Many medical doctors really want to have a high repetition ruby laser system because that can reduce the operation time. We investigated a new ruby laser system with high repetition rate of 4Hz using double cavities. Furthermore, we develop a new power supply system adopting zero voltage switching(ZVS) to minimize switching loss by LLC resonant converter designed as 2kW class.

This paper presents an adaptive observer-based approach to estimate voltage parameters, including frequency, amplitude, and phase angle, for single-phase power systems. In contrast to most existing estimation methods of grid voltage parameters, in this study, grid voltage is treated as a dynamic system related to an unknown grid frequency. Based on adaptive observer theory, a full-order adaptive observer is proposed to estimate voltage parameters. A Lyapunov function-based argument is employed to ensure that the proposed estimation method of voltage parameters has zero steady-state error, even when frequency varies or phase angle jumps significantly. Meanwhile, a reduced-order adaptive observer is designed as the simplified version of the proposed full-order observer. Compared with the frequency-adaptive virtual flux estimation, the proposed adaptive observers exhibit better dynamic response to track the actual grid voltage frequency, amplitude, and phase angle. Simulations and experiments have been conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed observers.

Effective computational strategies have been proposed in the evaluation of stiffness matrices of rigid-plastic finite element method widely used in simulation of metal forming processes. The stiffness matrices are expressed as the sum of stiffness matrices evaluated by reduced integration and Liu's stabilization matrices which control the occurrence os zero-energy mode due to excessive reduced integration. The proposed method has been applied to the solution of fundamental 3-dimensional problems. The results clarified that the deformed mesh configuration was remarkably stabilized and computation speed attained about 3 times as fast as that of conventional 3-dimensional analyses. Furthermore, computation speed increases by a factor 60 when parallel computation is introduced. This speed has a tendency to increase as the total degree of freedom increases. As a result, this rigid-plastic finite element method enables us to analyze real 3-dimensional forming processes with practically acceptable computation time.
