Green buckwheat seedlings have been used as a pollution free vegetable and medicinal crop for a long time. Some of the reasons are the rapid growth rate, the high protein and rutincontent, and a more favorable ratio of leaf to stem than mature plants. Off-crop season cultivation techniques were developed for growing the young and green buckwheat vegetable of higher quality and yield, and for its increased value-added income. The effects of planting season, seeding rate, seed bed soil fertility and type, and seedling growth period on yield and rutin content were determined for vegetable and medicinal use. The young vegetable yields. in the off season culture ranged from 2.62t/ha to 22.7t /ha. The highest vegetable yield was 22.7t /ha for 25 days old seedlings grown in the polyethylene film tunnel from March 30 to April 25, 1991 where seedling rate was 360kg /ha. Buckwheat vegetable quality and income were dependent upon planting season, seeding rate, growing duration and temperature, and facilities of raising seedlings. Protein content of buck-wheat seedlings was from 21.5% to 17.2%. Rutin content of the vegetable was 53.9~31.7mg /100g for the whole plant in average. The protein and rutin content was significantly varied due to the different environmental conditions including fertility and type of seed bed soil, growing duration, temperature of the green house, and polyethylene film house and tunnel.
The seedlings of yacon (Polymnia sonchifolia Poeppig & Endlicher), which were cuttings, plug seedling (PS), crown bud before sprouting (CBBS), crown bud after sprouting (CBAS), and divided seedling after budding (DSAB) were planted at 70$\times$50 cm planting distance on ridge; that was interow spacingintrarow spacing, and about 28,500$\pm$71 plants/ha. CBBS didn't need work and equipment to raise seedlings. PS and DSAB grew taller to 140.5 and 143.3cm, respectively, than others at 150 days after planting. In the changes of plant height, PS and DSAB showed taller than others during growth period, cuttings, CBBS, and CBAS grew rapidly in middle growth stage. Excepting main stem and petiole length, other characters were significant for seedling. Fresh weights were different among seedlings. Even though the yield of plants grown from CBAS and CBBS were lower with 34.7 and 36.4 ton/ha, respectively, than 3.6 ton/ha of DSAB; its yield index were over 95%, hence, those of plants grown from cutting and PS were lower with 73 and 87%, respectively. The ratio of tuberous roots over 200g to total tuberous roots per plant was the highest from DSAB. Most of tuberous roots were under 200g per tuberous root from cuttings. CBBS, CBAS, and DSAB are suitable to use seedlings for high yield of yacono. Yacon plant by DSAB much produced tuberous root of over 200g.

A liquid-type chlorella (LC) produced by self-cultivation is used for strawberry cultivation by farmers in Korea. This study aimed to investigate seedling growth in two strawberry cultivars 'Soraya' and 'Haruhi' after applying solid-type chlorella (SC) in the greenhouse for 30 d. The treatments were as follows: Control, LC (0.2% of 1.0 × 107 cells/mL), ¼ SC (12.5 g/m2), ½ SC (25 g/m2), and SC (50 g/m2). Compared to the control, in the ½ SC treatment, dry weight of the seedlings increased at 30 days after treatment (DAT). Phosphorus content in the leaves of 'Soraya' seedlings of the SC treatment increased compared to that of the control. At 10 and 30 DAT, photosynthetic pigments including chlorophylls and carotenoids in the seedlings of both cultivars increased with the ½ SC treatment. These results indicate that the application of SC improved the growth of strawberry seedlings and could replace LC.

This study investigated the possibility of application of the recently introduced cylindrical paper pot seedlings in hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cultivation. The seedling growth, initial rooting after planting and accumulated fruit yield were investigated with the treatments of tray type (paper pot and plug) as a main factor, tray cell number (40 cell and 50 cell) as a sub-factor, and fertigation method (continuous fertigation and fertigation after 35 days sowing) as a sub-sub factor, respectively. The growth of pepper seedlings was significantly affected by tray type and fertigation method showing the highest value at 50 cell plug tray with continuous fertigation, and the effect of fertigation was greater than that of trays. 'Cheongyang', 'Daekwonseoneon' and 'Longgreenmat' cultivar showed all the same pattern in seedling growth. These three-cultivar seedlings were planted in plastic house and in open field in Jeonju area, respectively, and another 'Daekwonseoneon' seedlings raised Yeongyang local area was also planted at the same area. There was no difference in the rooting of 'Cheongyang' pepper at 2 weeks after planting in plastic house. The accumulated fruit weight was not significantly different between paper pot seedlings and plug seedlings in three cultivar grown in plastic house. However, that of 'Cheongyang' pepper showed higher at paper pot seedlings than plug seedlings and the other two cultivar were higher at plug seedlings in open field. 'Daekwonseoneon' pepper yield grown in open field in 'Yeongyang' area was not significant between paper pot seedlings and plug seedlings. In conclusion, the pattern of seedlings growth grown in the cylindrical paper pot was the same as those of the conventional plug seedlings and also fruit yield was similar between paper pot seedlings and plug seedlings even though minute difference among cultivars. These results suggest that pepper seedlings grown in paper pot should be highly applicable to pepper cultivation.
Experimental transportations of the olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) seedlings (body weight $2.1\pm0.39g$) with polyethylene vinyl bag were Performed to study the change of dissolved oxygen (DO) during transportation, survival rate and feeding activity of seedlings after transportation. The distance and time required for the transportations were 272 km and 11 hours, respectively. DO was rapidly decreased within 3 hours (P<0.05) during the transportation of seedlings of 40 fish in 10l of sea water at $15.6\~17.8^{\circ}C$ of initial water temperature with 5 ml/l of initial DO. The decreasing tendency of DO (Y) according to elapsed time (X) was expressed an equation of $Y\;=\;2.7444X^{-0.4780}$ (r=0.8071). Feeding activity of the seedlings after transportation supplemented with oxygen and icepack besides above transport conditions was significantly higher than that of fish supplemented with icepack only (P<0.05). It was desirable to starve the seedlings for 36 hours before transportation. Survival rate of seedlings was greatly reduced, when the dissolved oxygen concentration was lowered below the range of $0.7\~0.94ml/l$ just after transportation.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the patterns of farming materials required for creating and operating elementary school vegetable gardens and to propose a plan for vitalizing business related to urban agriculture. As a result of the survey, the farming materials purchased most for the operation of the school gardens were seeds materials focused on seedlings, compost/fertilizer, and farming tools focused on trowels, sprinklers, and hoes. Purchases of farming materials were made mostly through the internet, while most purchases of seedlings were made in pesticide stores. Therefore, it is necessary to provide information and education related to the use of farming materials. Thus, establishment and maintenance of highly accessible and reliable internet sources are recommended to provide the lists of farm products necessary as well as related information to help users in purchase and use in order to create and operate the school garden. In order to supply high-quality seedlings, it is necessary to provide information and education on the kinds of seedlings, management, cultivation, delivery methods, and the like, focusing on pesticide stores producing and distributing seedlings. Providing such information for participants will improve their satisfaction. Also, if businesses related to urban agriculture use these study results in producing, preparing, managing and selling seedlings and farming materials, they will also be able to generate profits and vitalize urban agriculture.
Objective of this study was to select ectomycorrhizal fungi for black spruce(Picea mariana) inoculation to overcome the growth inhibitory effects of Kalmia angustifolia. Nineteen isolates representing 11 species of ectomycorrhizal fungi were tested for their abilities to grow and form mycorrhizae with black spruce seedlings in the presence of water leachate of leaves of Kalmia. Mycelium growth of 9 isolates were inhibited by the leaf leachate. Colony diameter and biomass of the other 10 isolates were either increased or unaffected under the same conditions. Acidic pH of the culture medium(pH 3 and 4) inhibited some of the fungi, but a combination of acidic pH and the leaf leachate was more inhibitory. Thirteen isolates were able to form ectomycorrhizae with black spruce in presence of 25% leaf leachate in pure culture. Four isolates, Paxillus involutus(NF4), Cenococcum geophilum(GB12), Laccaria laccata(GB23), and E-strain(GB45) formed mycorrhizae more successfully than the others in presence of up to 50% Kalmia leaf leachate. Black spruce seedlings pre-inoculated with these fungi were grown with Kalmia leaf leachate and live Kalmia plants during a four month greenhouse experiment. Abundant mycorrhizae(77-91% of root tips) were developed on seedlings pre-inoculated with P. involutus, L. laccata and E-strain but relatively poor mycorrhization(32% of root tips) resulted with C. geophidum. Over 90% of the short root mycorrhizae were attributed to the inoculated fungi although indigenous mycorrhizae also occurred on most seedlings. Persistence of the mycorrhizae was not affected by living Kalmia plants. Over 80% of the mycorrhizae on seedlings inoculated with P. involutus, L. laccata and E-strain and 53% of the mycorrhizae on seedlings inoculated with C. geophilum were attributable to the inoculant fungi. Control seedlings formed about 45% ectomycorrhizal short roots with indigenous fungi. The L. laccata and C. geophilum inoculated seedlings exhibited enhanced mycorrhizae formation in presence of Kalmia leaf leachate. Mycorrhizae formation with inoculant fungi was 4-15% lower at pH 4 than at pH 5, with the greatest inhibition occurring for L. laccata. Seedlings inoculated with P. involutus had the greatest shoot and root growth followed by L. laccata and E-strain inoculated seedlings. The P. involutus and L. laccata inoculated seedlings were significantly taller with more shoot dry biomass than the uninoculated(control) seedlings. E-strain inoculated seedlings had significantly higher shoot dry biomass and significantly lower number of first order lateral roots compared to the control but other growth parameters such as height, root dry weight and number of short root tips were not significantly different from the control. Seedlings inoculated with C. geophilum were not significantly different from the uninoculated seedlings in any of the growth parameters except for the number of first artier lateral roots which was significantly less than the control seedlings.
This experiment was performed to investigate the effect of UV-B (4 kJ${\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$) irradiation and growth inhibitor (50 mg${\cdot}L^{-1}$ diniconazole, 500 mg${\cdot}L^{-1}$) treatment on the overgrowth retardation and the growth and yield afterplanting in plug-grown cucumber, tomato, and hot pepper sedlings. Stem length of UV-B-irradiated and iniconazole-treated seedlings was shortened by 38 and 35%^ in cucumber, 37 and 41% in tomato, and 23 and 23% in hot pepper, respectively, compared with non-treated seedlings. While retarding effect ofhexaconazole waslower that that of UV-B or diniconazle. Leaf area and dry weight alson decreased but ldaf thickness increased in UV-B irradiated or growth-inhibitor-treated seedlings. Even thouth the plant height and leaf area of UV-B-irradiated seedlings ant seedling stage were shorter and smaller that those ofnon-treatedd seedlings, they were recovered to the similar level to the growth of non-treated seedlings 20to 30days after trasplantin. The diconazole-and hexaconazole-treated seedlings were delayed recovery to their normal growth, Fruit yiedl of UV-V-irradiated hot pepper and tomato slightly increased but UV-B irradiated cucumer had similar yield to growth-inhibitor-treated one. It suggested that the use of UV-B irradiation could become a reliable tool of overgrowth retardation of plug-grown vegetable seedlings in greenhouse.
This study was conducted to examine the changes in growths of tomato and watermelon seedlings and the relationship among growth parameters which are used to evaluate healthy seedling as affected by shading. Plants were grown under 0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% shadings using polyethylene films. Leaf area index (LAI) of tomato and grafted watermelon seedlings increased under 50% and 75% shading. Total dry weight decreased with increase of shading level. The growth rates of stem diameter, LAI, total weight were faster under 50% and 75% shading with increase of integral radiation than under 0% and 25% shading. Stem diameters of tomato and grafted watermelon seedlings showed no significant differences among shading regimes. Stem diameters of tomato seedlings had upward tendency with increase of total dry weight and shoot height, but there were no significant differences among shading regimes. Stem diameters of grafted watermelon seedlings had no relationship with shoot height. These results indicate that stem diameter of tomato seedlings is not appropriate for assessing seedlings quality but stem diameter of grafted watermelon seedlings with shoot height is available.
This study was conducted to investigate the influence of light condition before and after chilling treatment started at different times of a day on the survival and physiological responses of cucumber seedlings grown in a greenhouse. Percent survival of cucumber seedling exposed to a chilling temperature of 2$^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours varied considerably depending upon the initiation time of chilling treatment. Seedlings exposed to chilling treatment from 7:00 o clock, the end of a dark period, showed considerably lower % survival of 30.6% as compared to 90.2% in those exposed to the same treatment starting from 18:00 o clock, the end of a photoperiod. This difference in % survival was found to be closely associated with content of photosynthetic assimilates in seedlings. Relative amount of electrolyte leakage was 57.1% in seedlings chilled from 7:00 o clock and 25.9% in seedlings chilled from 18:00 o clock. Among the ions found in the electrolyte leakage, content of $K^{+}$ was the greatest, followed by that of N $a^{+}$, $Mg^{+}$ and $Ca^{+2}$. Light illumination for 2 hours or longer shortly before chilling treatment during the dark period was effective in increasing % survival of seedlings, probably because of increased photosynthetic assimilates in seedlings. Light illumination during a 48 hour chilling treatment at 3$^{\circ}C$ significantly reduced % survival to 43.3% as compared to 92.0% in seedlings kept continuously in darkness.ess.s.
