  • Aqueous extraction of sea tangle at the temperature range of 60~10$0^{\circ}C$ was studied for temperature effects on soluble solids and protein yields, amino nitrogen, turbidity and viscosity of extracts. The solids and protein yield were increased as the temperature increased and most of solids and protein were extracted during 1 hour. The supernatant ratio after centrifugation showed significantly low for the extraction at 6$0^{\circ}C$. More temperature effects were found on turbidity and viscosity than yields. A significantly higher total amino nitrogen contents was obtained from higher temperature at initial stage of extraction and then the differences of them became to be narrow as the extraction prolonged further. The low values of 24.1% solids and 13.5% protein yields after 2 hours of extraction at 10$0^{\circ}C$ indicated that most of solids in sea tangle are insouble.

  • Effects of enzymatic hydrolysis of polysaccharides with using three commercial mixed enzymes (Ultrazyme, Celluclast, Viscozyme) were investigated on supernatant ratio, solid yields and viscosity of sea mustard extracts. The result showed that enzymatic hydrolysis prior to extraction increased the solids concentration up to 27.3% and the solids yield up to 14.0%. However the supernatant ratio after centrifugation of the sea mustard suspension was rather reduced. The viscosity of the extracts was significantly increased during initial enzymatic hydrolysis.

  • Effects of deficit irrigation by different soil moisture-based water potential on total soluble solids and fruit yields in fresh tomato were investigated. Amount of irrigation was saved about 11%, 25% and 41% at -20 kPa,-30 kPa and -40 kPa treatment compared to the -15 kPa treatment as a standard practice, respectively. Deficit irrigation with -30 kPa and -40 kPa treatment significantly increased total soluble solids by 11% and 24% at first truss compared to the -15 kPa treatment, with no significant loss of yield, respectively. However, deficit irrigation with -30 kPa and -40 kPa treatment significantly increased total soluble solids at second and third truss, but resulted in substantial yield loss compared to the standard practice. Total fruit yields at -30 kPa and -40 kPa treatment was decreased by 16.5% and 25.1% compared to the -15 kPa treatment. However, marketable fruits based on fruit size (150$\sim$250g) was increased by 27.8% at -30 kPa treatment compared to the -15 kPa treatment.

  • Korean red ginseng tails was extracted with solutions having various ethanol concentration at the temperature range of 70-100 $^{\circ}C$. Extraction was carried out for 1-5 times of 8 hours at given temperature. The results obtained on physicochemical properties of yields, saponins, sugars, minerals, color and viscosity were analyzed statistically to find the correlation with extracting conditions. A very high positive correlation was found between extraction time and cumulative values of yields of chemical components. Increase in ethanol concentration affected negatively on viscosity, absorbencies and yields of soluble solids and minerals. Some of the properties also showed a high correlation with temperature increase. Equations were also derived from the significant results on correlation analysis.

  • In order to improve the solids and protein concentration and their yields in sea mustard extracts, HCl, sucrose, NaCl, EDTA, and SHMP were added during aqueous extraction and studied their effects on quality characteristics of the extracts. The extracts were prepared by 2 hours of boiling of ground sea mustard and centrifugation. Addition of HCl at $0.1{\sim}0.5N$ level was found that the solids and protein yields was significantly improved along with the ratio of supernatant seperated. The maximum solids and protein yields obtained were 52.48%, 36.73%, respectively, while those values of the aqueous extract without HCl were 23.20%, and 4.87%. Viscosity was reduced from 450 cps to less than 20 cps by HCl addition. When NaCl, sucrose, SHMP, and $Na_2EDTA$ were added in the concentration of range of $0.5{\sim}3.0%$, solid concentration and yields were also significantly improved by the order of $Na_2EDTA-SHMP-sucrose-NaCl$ in their effect. The highest solid yield of 55.0% was obtained from 3% addition of $Na_2EDTA$. Viscosity and turbidity were also reduced by addition of SHMP and $Na_2EDTA$.

  • Dried anchovy (Engraulis japonica) was ground and treated with 0.3N NaOH solution and then hydrolyzed with proteolytic enzymes. Extracts obtained by centrifugation of alkali-enzyme treated anchovy slurry was compared with water extract for the yields of soluble solid, protein and ashes and organoleptic characteristics. The data for the yields of the soluble solids, protein and ash showed that a 2-3 folds increase in those yields was resulted by combined alkali-enzyme treatments when it was compared to water only extract. The organoleptic evaluation on the alkali-enzyme treated anchovy extracts also showed a 2-3 folds in flavor strength of all descriptions in odor and taste and a significant improvement in total odor or taste acceptability.

  • Hot-water soluble extracts were prepared from medium-sized barks of Siberian larch (Larix gmelineii). The extracts were fractionated by ultrafiltration method for producing uniform quality of adhesives. Molecular weight distribution of the extracts was ranged of 100 to 300.000. pH of the extracts affected amounts of flux, and the range of pH 6~pH 8 was proper for wood adhesives, because of easy concentration and fast gelation time. Removal of particles greater than $0.45{\mu}m$ from the extracts increased both filtration speed (flux) and yields of solids in the filtrates. In ultrafiltration process. operating pressure, filtrate temperature, and flow rate significantly increased with the increase of individual condition. Ultrafiltration using PM10 membrane was very effective to fractionate and concentrate the extracts. Removal of large particles greater than 0.45 m from the extracts increased filtration speed(flux) and yields of solids in the filtrates. A gelation time was accelerated with the increasing pH of the extracts and its concentration. The Stiasny precipitate(26%) from the filtrate obtained by PM 10 membrane was very lower than that(78%) of the retentates. This ultrafiltration method was efficient for obtaining high yield purified phenolic compounds.

  • Effect of temperature on some quality characteristics of aqueous extracts of sea mustard was investigated. The concentration of total solids and protein and their yields in the extracts were increased as the extraction temperature raised from $50^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$ during initial period of extraction. However the lower values of the percent of supernatant was obtained at $50^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$. The percent of yields of solids and protein for 1 hour extraction at $100^{\circ}C$ were 21.56% and 4.7%, respectively. The highest viscosity, which was $2.5{\sim}4.0$ times of higher values of the other extracts, was obtained by 2 hours extraction at $100^{\circ}C$. The turbidity was gradually decreased after 1 hour extraction. The activation energy calculated for initial increase rate of solid and protein concentration were 1.18 and 3.90 Cal/mole, respectively.

  • The classical trajectory method, previously applied to the reactions of polyatomic molecules with fcc structured metal solids[S. C. Park, C. H. Cho, and C. H. Rhee, Bull. Kor. Chem. Soc., 11, $1(1990)]^1$ is extended to the collision energy dependence of the reaction of the Al solid by $SiCl_4$ molecules. We have calculated etching yields, degrees of anisotropy, kinetic energy distributions, and angular distributions for the reactions of the Al solid and compared with those for the reactions of the Cu solid. Over the range of collision energies we considered, the reactions of the Al soIid show higher etching yield and better anisotropy than the reactions of the Cu solid. Details of reaction mechanisms and the relevance of these calculations for the dry etching of CuAl alloy are discussed.

  • To extract arabinogalactan from larch (Larix Leptolepis), chips immersed with water(20-$90^{\circ}C$) for 1hr, were defiberized by refiner. The liquors were recovered and purified to pure arabinogalactan by ion exchange resin(IRC-50 a. IR-45) or MgO. Additionally the optimal condition in purification with MgO was also investigated. 1. The amounts of solids(crude sugars) and pure arabinogalctan in solids are 8.6-11.3% and 7.3-8.5%(raw material = 100), respectively. 2. Phenolic materials in crude sugars are removed up to 96-89% by ion exchange resin and 94-88% by MgO, while recovery yields of pure arabinogalactan are 81-75% on purification with ion exchange resin and 91-87% on purification with MgO. 3. The optimal conditions of purification with MgO are the addition of 35mg MgO/0.5g of crude sugars, 45 minutes at $70^{\circ}C$, or 25 mg MgO, 30 minutes at $85^{\circ}C$.
