For most engineering materials are influenced by the dominant mechanism resisting crack extention under large scale yielding conditions. Continuum mechanics analysis shows that fracture toughness, in addition to depending on young's modulus, flow stress strain hardening exponent, and yield strain, should be nearly proportoinal to the effective fracture ductility obtained for the stress state characteristic for region ahead of the crack; plane stress or plane strain. It's known that, in most ductile materials, crack propagation of the material strongly governed by the $J_{IC}$ value, which is still difficult to determine for it's complicate and treble-some determinative process. This paper, on the assumption that, initiation of crack tip strain field reaches on the relationships between the critical value of J-integral ($J_{IC}$) and the local fracture strain(${\varepsilon}_c$) in uniaxial tensile test in the region of maximun reduction areas was described.
The changes of lamellar(${\alpha}_2+{\gamma}$) structure of TiAl intermetallic compound which is a high potential, high temperature aerospace material was investigated by heat treatment. The lamellar structure was short and made subgrain in prior a grains after homogenizing at 1523 K. It became longer and finer, and the subgrain went out during subsequent isothermal heatteating at 1273 K. The yield, fracture strength and strain to fracture if the heat treated specimens was increased and the hardness of them was decreased a little in the finer lamellar structure, because fine lamellar interface, sugrain boundary and grain boundary may block initiation and propagation of crack.

'Seeberry' is a short-day $F_1$ hybrid strawberry for seed propagation, that was released by the Protected Horticulture Experiment Station (RDA, Republic of Korea) in 2013. Inbred lines derived from domestic germplasms and selected varieties were used to develop this cultivar. 'Seeberry' originated from a cross of two inbred lines: a male parent 'Wongyo 3115' with high firmness and a female parent 'Wongyo 3116' with excellent fruit shape and high yield. 'Seeberry' cultivar should be grown with a crown diameter of over 10 mm to reveal its unique characteristics. 'Seeberry' has an upright plant shape with elliptic leaves, 12-15 flowers per cluster, vigorless growth habit, and average flower bud differentiation compared to vegetatively propagated cultivars. Fruits of 'Seeberry' are conical, having light skin color and approximately 15-16 g in average weight. Yield of this cultivar is about 92% lower than that of 'Akihime', but 'Seeberry' has excellent taste, sugar content of $9.7^{\circ}Bx$, acidity of 0.6%, and good texture. With regard to disease and pest resistance, 'Seeberry' is sensitive to powdery mildew, aphids, and the two-spotted spider mite, and is resistant to anthracnose.
The risks of debris flows caused by climate change have increased significantly around the world. Recently, landslide disaster prevention technology is more focused on the failure and post-failure dynamics to mitigate the hazards in flow-prone area. In particular, we should define the soil strength and flow characteristics to estimate the debris flow mobility in the mountainous regions in Korea. To do so, we selected known ancient landslides area: Inje, Pohang and Sangju debris flows. Firstly we measured physical and mechanical properties: liquidity index and undrained shear strength by fall cone penetrometer. From the test results, we found that there is a possible relationship between liquidity index and undrained shear strength, $C_{ur}=(1.2/I_L)^{3.3}$, in the selected areas, even though they were different in geological compositions. Assuming that the yield stress is equal to the undrained shear strength at the initiation of sliding, we examined the flow characteristics of weathered soils in Korea. When liquidity index is given as 1, 1.5 and 3.0, the debris flow motion of weathered soils is compared with that of mud-rich sediments, which are known as low-activity clays. At $I_L=1$, it seems that debris flow could reach approximately 250m after 5 minutes. As liquidity index increased from 1 to 3, the debris flow propagation of weathered soils is twice than that of low-activity clays. It may be due to the fact that soil masses mixed with the ambient water and then highly fragmented during flow, thereby leading to the high mobility. The results may help to predict the debris flow propagation and to develop disaster prevention technology at similar geological settings, especially for the weathered soils, in Korea.

A simple modification of the standard back-propagation algorithm to eliminate redundant connections(weights and biases) is described. It was motivated by speculations from the distribution of the magnitudes of the weights and the biases, analysis of the classification boundary, and the nonlinearity of the sigmoid function. After initial training, this algorithm eliminates all connections of which magnitude is below a threshold by setting them to zero. The algorithm then conducts retraining in which all weights and biases are adjusted to allow important ones to recover. In studies with Boolean functions, the algorithm reconstructed the theoretical minimum architecture and eliminated the connections which are not necessary to solve the functions. For simulated random signal classification problems, the algorithm produced the result which is consistent with the idea that easier problems require simpler networks and yield lower misclassification rates. Furthermore, in comparison, our algorithm produced better generalization than the standard algorithm by reducing over fitting and pattern memorization problems.

A numerical solution of temperature and thermally induced stress in a wafer during rapid thermal processing (R.T.P) is obtained, and an analysis of onset and propagation of slip is performed and compared with experiment. In order to calculate temperature distribution of a wafer in R.T.P system, heat conduction equation that incorporated with radiative and convective heat transfer model is solved, and the solution of the equation is calculated numerically using alternating direction implicit (A.D.I) method. In dealing with radiative heat transfer, a partially transparent body that absorbs the radiation energy is assumed and this transparent body undergoes multiple internal reflections and absorptions. Two dimensional (assuming plane stress) thermoelastic constitutive equation is used to calculate thermal stress induced in a wafer and finite element method is employed to solve the equation numerically. The stress resolved in the slip directions on the slip planes of silicon is compared with the yield stress of silicon in order to predict the slip. The result of the analysis shows that the wafer temperature at which slip occurs is affected by the heating rate of the R.T.P system. It is observed that once slip occurs in the wafer, the slip grows.

Offshore structure may be considerably vulnerable to fatigue failure while initial flaw propagates under cyclic loading, so crack propagation analysis/fracture/yield assessments about initial flaw detected by NDT are necessarily required. In this paper, case studies have been conducted by flaw assessment program using engineering criticality analysis (ECA) approach. Variables such as flaw geometry, flaw size, structure geometry, dynamic stress, static stress, toughness, crack growth rate, stress concentration factor (SCF) affected by weld are considered as analysis conditions. As a result, the safety of structure was examined during fatigue loading life. Also, critical initial flaw size was calculated by sensitivity module in the developed program. The flaw assessments analysis using ECA approach can be very useful in offshore industries owing to the increasing demand on the engineering criticality analysis of potential initial flaws.
Biparental clones and recombinant clones were obtained by spheroplast fusion of Pseudomonas putida KU218R-3 and P.putida KU428. Formation of the fusion product was the most effective when the Pseudomonas spheroplast mixture were treated with 40% plyethyleneglycol(PEG) 6000 for 10min at room temperature, The fusants which selected by indirect method were obtained at an average frequency of 10.8%. Most of the fusants were biparental clones (10.4%) and the recombinant clones were produced in low yield (0.42%). Fusants, at the frequency of 4% were obtained without PEG 6000, which shows that fusion is not strictly dependant on PEG. The stability of fusants were examined. Most of the biparental clones were segregated to parental form amd late recombinants were formed on further propagation of biparental clone but the recombinant clones were nery stable.
It is difficult to obtain sufficient healthy skin for coverage of a wide area of skin wound. In the skin, an additional population of living epithelial cells is located in the outer root sheath (ORS) of hair $follicles.^{1),2)}$ ORS cells should be a good source of epithelium because they are easily obtainable and patients do not have to suffer from scar formation at donor sites. We modified ordinary primary culture technique for the purpose of solving such problem that epithelial cells have a low propagation and easy aging during culture periods. First of all, we improved primary cultivation methods. In the ordinary primary culture, average yield of human ORS cells was $2\;{\times}\;10^3$ cells/follicle by direct incubation with trypsin (0.1%)/EDTA (0.02%) solution for 15 min at $37^{\circ}C$ but we could obtain about $6.5\;{\times}\;10^3$ cells/follicle by two step enzyme digestion method with dispase (1.2 U/ml) and trypsin (0.1%)/EDTA (0.02%) solution. So we could achieve three times higher primary cultured ORS cell yield. Secondly, we could obtain total $2\;{\times}\;10^7$ cells in serum free medium and even more total $6\;{\times}\;10^7$ cells in modified E-medium with mitomycin C-treated feeder cells during 17 days. Using the cultured ORS cells, and we could make bioartificial skin equivalent in vitro and concluded that ORS cells were progenitor cells for skin epithelial cell.
