A new waxy corn hybrid 'Daedukchal 1' was developed from single cross between CNU 504 and CNU 2396 at Chungnam National University in 2007. Inbred CNU 504 used as a seed parent and inbred CNU 2396 as a pollen parent were collected throughout domestic regions. Tasseling date of this hybrid was seven days later than that of check hybrid, 'Chalok 1'. 'Daedukchal 1' was 19.7 cm in ear length and 4.5 cm in ear diameter. On yield trial, ear length of this hybrid was increased 29.7% compared with a check hybrid, 'Chalok 1'. 'Daedukchal 1' had white kernels and good eating quality due to high sugar content and thinner pericarp. The ratio of kernel set length/ear length was similar to 'Chalok 1'. It is moderately resistant to southern leaf blight and northern leaf blight but susceptible to corn borer. The yields of 'Daedukchal 1' in fresh ear weight and in number of fresh ear were 16% and 8%, respectively, higher than those of a check hybrid in regional yield trials for two years. Seed production for this hybrid was better because of the consistency of tasseling dates.

The hardness of hard red winter (HRW) wheat had an effect on the yield of farina , as it positively correlated with the coarse fraction (over 34W) and negatively correlated with the flour fraction from farina milling. But it did not show any significances on flour milling from the micromilling process. The flour yields was better correlated with the break flour fraction (r=0.730 than with reduction flour (r=0.27). The farina yield was controlled by a fraction over 34W (coarse granule0. Protein was the most important single factor for the quality of cooked farina spaghetti, but not for flour milling or farina milling. On the other hand, hardness was important in the production of farina milling , whereas it did not govern spaghetti cooking quality, Environmental factors affected the quality of cooked spaghetti as much as varieties of HRW wheats. The quality of cooked farina spaghetti generally correlated with the protein in the location composites of wheats. Higher protein content wheats showed better spaghetti cooking quality.
The Baghabarighat Milk Shed Area (BMSA), in Bangladesh belonging to the Bangladesh Milk Producers Cooperative Union Limited (BMPCUL) was selected to study the qualitative and quantitative aspects of dairy milk and to establish a trend throughout the year (July 1995 to June 1990) of milk collected at morning and evening, and daily. The average fat, solids-not-fat (SNF) and total solid (TS) contents of the morning milk were 4.58, 7.75 and 12.33%, respectively, and evening milk contained 5.41, 7.81 and 13.23%. The values for the quality varied (p<0.01) throughout the year without a specific trend. Higher milk collection occured at morning (52.77%) than evening (47.24%), but total yield of fat from morning milk was lower (48.74%) than evening milk (51.26%) due to a lower fat value (4.58%). Yield of SNF (52.57% morning, 47.37% evening) followed the values of the amount of milk collected due to their similar value at morning (7.75) and evening (7.81). Overall, TS yield was 51 and 49% from morning and evening. There was not a significant (p>0.01) relationship between fat and TS values of morning milk with those of evening milk, but there was a correlation (p<0.01) between milk yield at morning and all other parameters for evening. Solids-not-fat value of morning milk was related with yield and SNF value of milk from evening, but not with fat and TS evening milk. It may be concluded that evening milk contains higher amounts of fat, SNF and TS, but yields were higher at morning, except fat. Milk collected at morning showed a relationship with all the parameters found at evening.

This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of harvesting dates on the dry matter yield and quality of "Kool grazer" winter rye(Seca1e cereale L.) as a soilage crop at the Forage Experimental Field of College of Agrlc. and Life Sciences, SNU, Suweon. Four-day harvasting interval was allocated to measure the growth, yield and quality of rye from April 14 to May 18, 1987. Rye was rapidly grown as 3 cm/day and the growth was linearly recorded from the elongation to flowering stage. The dry matter and in vitro digestible dry matter(1VDDM) yields per ha were linearly increased up to 0.26 and 0.19 tonlday from April 14 to May 4 and April 14 to 29, respectively, but major breaks in yield increases occurred at the 50% heading stage, than yields increased. The highest crude protein yield was observed at the first heading stage of April 29, then decreased. Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and crude protein(CP) contents of rye at the heading stage of May 5 were 35 and 17%, respectively and the nutritive value of rye in terms of ADF and CP contents was evaluated as the I st grade hay, but neutral detergent fiber(NDF) content of rye was 47 % at the boot stage ofApril 22 and evaluated as the 2nd grade hay in terms of NDF content. The results indicate that the first heading stage or the end of April would be the most suitable harvesting time for early maturing winter rye as a soilage crop in terms of yield and quality in the middle northwestern coast rcgion of Korea. of Korea.

Cassia mimosoides var. nomame was grown at five seeding rates (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 kg/ha) from March 31 to September 21, 1998 at Cheju to determine influence of seeding rate on agronomic characters, and forage yield and quality. Days to flowering increased from 126 to 129 days as seeding rate increased from 10 to 50 kg/ha. The plant height increased from 86 to 99 cm as seeding rate was increased from 10 to 30 kg/hac and then decreased to 93 cm at a rate of 50 kglha. With increasing seeding rate, stem diameter quadratically decreased and the number of branches and green leaves per plant linearly decreased but the number of withering leaves per plant linearly increased. As seeding rate increased &om 10 to 30 kg/ha, fresh forage, dry matter, crude protein, and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield increased 'from 30.7 to 49.1, 7.5 to 12.2, 0.90 to 1.57 and 4.09 to 7.09 MTha, respectively, and then decreased with further increased seeding rates. Crude protein, ether extract, nitrogen free extract, and TDN wntent increased 12.1 to 14.2% 2.2 to 2.9%, 35.1 to 39.2%, 54.8 to 60.3% respectively, but crude fiber wntent decreased 39.8 .to 33.3% and crude ash declined 4.9 to 3.8% as seeding rate increased from 10 to 50 kgiha. The optimum seeding rate to obtain the highest TDN yield was estimated to be 36kglha. (Key words : Cassia mimosoides var. nomame, Seeding rate, Forage yield, Forage quality)

This study was conducted to determine the nutritive value of live yeast culture (RumiSacc, Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and to investigate its effects on milk yield, milk composition and some blood parameters in lactating cows. Six multiparous Holstein cows were allocated to two groups of three cows and assigned randomly to one of two diets in a cross-over experiment. Daily 50 g RumiSacc was top dressed at the p.m. feeding for the treatment group. RumiSacc supplied a high protein and energy with high organic matter digestibility values (83.35%) determined by in vitro enzymatic analysis. Yeast culture supplementation significantly increased milk yield, tended to increase fat yield, protein yield and lactose yield of milk. Methylated fatty acid level of 18:3 (n-3) in milk fat was increased by yeast culture supplementation. The concentrations of methionine, phenyalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan and taurine were significantly increased with dietary inclusion of yeast culture. Live yeast culture supplementation did not affect other performance characteristics, milk quality characteristics and blood parameters. As a conclusion live yeast culture (RumiSacc, Saccharomyces cerevisiae) had high nutritive value and positive effects on milk production and some milk quality characteristics in lactating cows under field conditions.

The effect of transplanting and harvest timing was evaluated for the production of high quality pigmented rice in the Yeongnam plain area. Rice was transplanted on June $2^{nd}$ and $14^{th}$ and harvested between 35 - 55 days after panicle heading at 5 - day intervals. Three black- and 3 red-pigmented rice cultivars (such as early cultivar : Josengheugchal, Jeogjinju; medium cultivar : Heugseol, Hongjinju; and mid-late cultivar : Sintoheugmi, Geongganghongmi) were studied. Yield components like spikelet number, ripened grain ratio, and 1,000 - grain weight of the black- and red-pigmented rice cultivars were similar for both the June 2 and June 14 transplantings but panicle number per $m^2$ was higher for the June 14 transplanting than for June 2. This contributed to a higher brown rice yield for the June 14 transplanting, by 6 - 19% for black-pigmented rice, and by 10 - 21% for red-pigmented rice than the yield for the June 2 transplanting. Total anthocyanin and polyphenol productions of the pigmented rice were also higher in the June 14 transplanting than that in the June 2 transplanting due to high brown rice yield. Based on the combined pigmented brown rice yield, we concluded that the optimal harvest timing would be 40 - 45 days after panicle heading (DAH) for the black-pigmented rice and 45 - 50 DAH for the red-pigmented rice. This study suggests that optimum transplanting and harvest timings play an important role for production of high quality pigmented rice in the Yeongnam plain area.

This study was done to determine the effect of additional nitrogen fertilization on the yield and quality of the Korean wheat cultivars Keumkang, Jokyoung, Baegjoong, Sooan, Uri and Goso. Different levels of nitrogen applications (109, 82, 55, 41, and 27 kg/ha) were applied to six cultivars. The results show that the yield and protein contents were increased in all tested cultivars. The grain yields of the cultivars Keumkang, Jokyoung, Baegjoong and Sooan were greatly increased in the case of double fertilization treatments. Moreover, Uri and Goso had greatly increased yields by the additional fertilization at a 50% rate compared with korea wheat standard fertilization rate. A significantly higher yield was observed in Uri. Baegjoong was the highest yielding cultivar among the tested cultivars with the additional nitrogen fertilization. As the fertilization was increased up to double the fertilization treatment, the yield of Baegjoong also showed a constant increase. Positive correlations were found between the nitrogen fertilizer application levels and the protein contents of the grain in all the cultivars except for Uri, and among these, Jokyoung had a most significant correlation between the nitrogen fertilizer application level and the increase in its protein contents. Keumkang had the highest protein contents and highest increase in the protein content change according to the amount of nitrogen application. However, amylose, damaged starch and ash contents were not significantly changed by the different levels of nitrogen applications.
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of quality grade (QG), and back-fat thickness on the carcass traits and meat quality properties of Hanwoo steers. Fifty carcasses were sorted into two QG (QG 1+ and 1) and three back-fat thickness (<10 mm, 10 to 19 mm and ≥19 mm) groups. After investigating the carcass traits (rib eye, back-fat thickness, weight, color, yield index, maturity, marbling score, and texture), the longissimus lumborum muscles from the carcass groups were collected and analyzed for meat quality (pH, color, cooking loss, and moisture), texture profiles [Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF), and tensile tests], and fatty acid. Results showed that marbling score (p<0.001), moisture (p<0.05) and tensile tests values (p<0.05) had a significant differences between QG1+ and QG1. No differences in pH, color traits, cooking loss and WBSF values occurred between the QG groups. Regarding the back-fat thickness effect, we observed that the carcass weight, yield index (p<0.001), yield grade (p<0.001) and marbling score (p<0.05) had a significant differences among the back-fat thickness groups. Regarding the meat quality, moisture content and WBSF values (p<0.01) among the back-fat thickness groups. The back-fat thickness did not affect the pH, color, cooking loss and tensile tests. The QG and back-fat thickness did not affect the fatty acids contents (p>0.05). It may be concluded that the carcass traits and meat quality were significantly affected the QG and back-fat thickness.

This study examined the impact of using total mixed ration (TMR) and concentrate on feed intake, daily gain, carcass yield grade, and carcass quality grade of Hanwoo steers and its subsequent economic efficiency. Thirty six 7-month-old Hanwoo steers were assigned to one of the four treatment groups, and each group was divided into three repeated pens, with each repeated pen comprising three steers. The treatment groups were: 1) separate feeding with commercial concentrate and forage (namely, SCF) for the entire experimental period; 2) TMR feeding for a growing period followed by SCF for the early and late fattening period (namely, TMRGSCF); 3) TMR feeding for growing and an early fattening period followed by SCF for the late fattening period (namely, TMREFSCF); and 4) TMR feeding for the entire experimental period (namely, TMRW). The results showed that the SCF treatment had significantly (p < 0.05) higher feed intake during the growing period than other treatments. In contrast, the total feed intake had little difference during early and late fattening as well as the whole period regardless of feeding strategies. Daily gain showed no difference during the growing period. However, it was significantly higher in SCF and TMREFSCF treatments for the early and late fattening period, respectively (p < 0.05). The daily gain during the total raising period is in the order of TMREFSCF > TMRGSCF > SCF > TMRW. Carcass characteristics, including carcass weight, loin eye muscle area, and carcass yield grade, did not significantly differ among different treatments. However, TMRW treatment, wherein TMR was fed for a long time, showed that the cold carcass weight was less compared with other treatments, but carcass yield grade was higher with thinner backfat. Backfat thickness was in the order of SCF > TMRGSCF > TMREFSCF > TMRW, showing that the thickness reduced with longer TMR feeding (p < 0.05). TMRGSCF, which numerically had a higher carcass quality grade, showed higher economic efficiency, whereas SCF showed low economic efficiency. In conclusion, it was more feasible to apply TMR strategy in the growing and early fattening period and then SCF for the early or late fattening period to improve carcass yield, quality grade, and economic efficiency.
