  • Oculodentodigital syndrome(ODD) was first reported by Lohmann in 1920 and termed by Meyer Schwicketath, which they called "dysplasia oculo-dento-digitalis" in 1957. It is somewhat rare heritable disease. ODD is generally inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern with a complex phenotype. The characteristic features are : (1) unique facial features, (2) microphthalmos, (3) syndactyly and camptodactyly of 4th and 5th fingers, (4) osseous anomalies of the middle phalanges of 5th fingers and toes, (5) enamel hypoplasia, (6) dry lusterless hair. We found several occlusal wearing and yellow discoloration of succedaneous teeth, multiple caries lesions, premature loss and pulpal involvement of primary teeth with associated enamel abnormalities caused by generalized enamel hypoplasia in a fairly constant oral finding. Occasionally partial anodontia, microdontia and cleft lip and palate can be manifested. This case, a 9-year-old female with repaired bilateral syndactyly was referred to pediatric dental clinic, Pusan National University Hospital for evaluation of severe attrition of teeth and caries lesions. She had most of the above mentioned typical manifestations of the syndrome. Dental treatment including caries control, stainless steel crown were performed.

  • A virus causing vein banding, sometimes yellow mosaic and rugose symptoms on peanut was prevalent around Suwon, Korea. A survey conducted in the area found disease incidence, depending on cultivar, to range from 79 to $100\%$. The virus was found to be seed-transmissible in all the five peanut cultivars tested with transmission rates ranging from 2 to $16\%$. Host range analysis failed to differentiate 9 field isolates collected from different peanuts cultivars showing various symptoms. Inclusion bodies such as scroll, pinwheel and long laminated aggregates induced by the virus in host plant cells were similar to those induced by members of the Potyvirus subdivision III. The virus showed < $95\%$ homology with Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV), BCMV-BICMV/AzMV strains and only < $91\%$ with Desmodium mosaic virus. Based on biological characterization, electron microscopy and molecular analyses of a Korean isolate (Daewon 1), the virus was identified as peanut stripe strain of BCMV.

  • In the Literatual Study on the Dysphonia, the results were as follows. 1. The causes of dysphonia are exogenous pathogenic factors,(specially cold evil)internal damage and meridian in The Yellow Emperor's Canon of Interal Medicine, since then endogenous pathogenic factors are lung-asthenia and deficiency of lung-yin etc. The main causes are disease caused by exogenous evils, general body weakness, emotional stimulation and excess of high voice rescently. 2. The pathogenesis of dysphonia originated from two factors; The first internal damages are consumption of body fluid with the formation of dryness evil resulting from the insufficienty of lung-yin and lung-collaterals damaged by heat-evil caused by deficiency of lung and kidney-yin. The second disease caused by exogenous evils is sluggishness of lung-energy caused by exogenous pathogenic factors. 3. The main relative organ are heart, lung and kidney etc. 4. The prescriptions of wind-cold symptoms are Samyoutang(三拗湯) and Hangsosan(杏蘇散), in the prescriptions of phlegm-heat symptom is Chenginyongphetang(淸咽寧肺湯), in the prescriptions of depressive syndrome due to disorder of vital energy are Sogangkitang(小降氣湯) and Shihochenggantang(柴胡淸肝湯加減), in the prescriptions of consumption of body fluid with the formation of dryness evil resulting from the insufficiency of lung-yin symptoms are Sanghangtang(桑杏湯) and Chenginguphetang(淸咽救肺湯, in the prescriptions of deficiency of lung and kidney-yin are Baekhabgokumtang(百合固金湯) and Maekmigiwhangtang(麥味地黃湯). 5. • In March of 2003, tumors (galls) were observed on ginseng seedling roots in ginseng seedbeds at Yeoju, Gyeonggi province, Korea. Symptoms were spherical or galls with about 0.5-1.0cm in diameter formed on the upper through middle parts of the primary roots. Bacterial isolates obtained from the root galls were Gram-negative, rod-shaped with peritrichous flagella, aerobic, not forming yellow or orange colonies on nutrient glucose agar, yeast extract-dextrose $CaCO_3$ agar and nutrient-broth yeast extract agar, non-fluorescent on King's B agar, and non-spore forming, which were identical to characteristics of the genus Agrobacterium. They were identified as Agrobacterium tumefaciens with 0.732-0.993 similarities in 100% probability by the Biolog analyses. The 16S rRNA gene partial sequences of the six isolates tested (Genbank Accession EF486308-EF486313) were 100% homologous to those of other A. tumefaciens strains (GenBank accession AF501343, AY701900, AY701898, AY701899). The above results confirmed that this bacterium is A. tumefaciens. Pathogenicity of the bacteria was proved by the inoculation test on carrot root discs and tomato seedlings. This is the first description of A. tumefaciens causing root gall in ginseng seedling. The disease occurred locally and sparsely, but considering its appearances in seedbeds suggests that the ginseng root gall may become a threat to ginseng in Korea.

  • A rust disease occurred on Veratrum patulum in Deogyusan National Park, Jeollabukdo. The typical symptoms of the disease appeared as small, yellowish spots on leaves at first. The spots then turned brown, their edges rised slightly, and powdery mass of yellow or yellowish brown spores appeared on the lesions. Severely infected leaves blighted and eventually defoliated. Urediniospores were yellowish brown in color, globose, subglobose or ellipsoid in shape and $19{\sim}27\;{\times}\;17{\sim}24\;{\mu}m$ in size. Teliospores were brown in color, ellipsoid, ovate or oblong in shape and $19{\sim}36\;{\times}\;15{\sim}21\;{\mu}m$ in size, the apex mostly rounded, with hyaline or subhyaline conical papilla, the base rounded or attenuated, smooth. Pedicels hyaline or subhyaline, up to $38\;{\mu}m$ long. The causal fungus was identified as Uromyces veratri Schroeter based on mycological characteristics and host specificity.

  • Differences in the number of Platypus koryoensis (Murayama) (Coleoptera: Platypodidae) trapped in different trap types, colors and positions on the trunk were evaluated to develop a monitoring trap for Platypus koryoensis, a known vector of Korean oak wilt disease. The experiments were conducted in an oak forest located in Gwangtan-myeon, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea using two types of trap: sticky trap and multi-funnel trap. Trapping efficiency of the two trap types was not significantly different. Trapping efficiency of the sticky trap was not affected by four trap colors: yellow, black, white and transparent. The number of beetle caught was higher in the traps facing the upper slope than the lower slope regardress of trap type. Our results showed that both traps type are useful for monitoring Platypus koryoensis.

  • In July of 2002, leaf spot disease was found on kudzu (Pueraria lobata) leaves in Jeonbuk province. A small leaf spot was appeared on leaves as a typical symptom and the spot was then surrounded by chlorotic halo. The lesions were expended and coalesced and the infected leaves became yellow leaf and later fall out. A causal fungal pathogen was isolated and the colony of the pathogen was light gray green to dark green on PDA. The pathogen produced mostly the single conidium but rarely long chain of 3 to 8 conidia. The conidia were dark brown in color, long ellipsoid or oval and 20-60 ${\times}$ 10-25 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size. Their septa were 4-8 transverse and 1-2 longitudinal or oblique. The pathogen was, therefore, identified as Alternaria tenuissima based on cultural and morphological characteristics. This is the first report on the leaf spot of kudzu caused by A. tenuissima in Korea.

  • The purpose of the research is to analyze damages of TYLCV (Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus) in the context of climate changes and to find the spatial distribution of the damages and characteristics of regions. A TYLCV is generally known for a plant disease related to temperature. Its occurrence rate increases when temperature rises. This disease first occurred in 2008 and rapidly spread nationwide. Due to the spread of a TYLCV, a number of Tomato farms in Korea were damaged severely. To analyze damages of the pest in the context of climate changes, this research estimated production loss under the current situation and RCP scenarios. Additionally, Hot Spot Analysis, LISA, and Cluster analysis were conducted to find spatial distribution and properties of largely damaged regions under RCP scenarios. The results explained that additional production loss was estimated differently by regions with the same temperature rising scenario. Also, largely damaged regions are spatially clustered and factors causing large damages were different across regional cluster groups. It means that certain regions can be damaged more than others by diseases and pests. Furthermore, pest management policy should reflect the properties of each region such as climate conditions, cultivate environment and production technologies. The findings from this research can be utilized for developing rural management plans and pest protection policies.

  • Leaf spot symptoms were observed in a commercial Palenopsis cultivated fields. Circular-elliptical watersoaked spots surrounded by a light green or yellow halo and turned to black when it was severe infection or blacken with gathered symptoms. These spots were finally enlarged to form of larger areas. Under the favorable conditions of temperature and moisture, the infection extended rapidly and dispersed to the crown and sometimes the infected plant became dead. A bacterial organism, isolated from the advancing margins of the lesions, was tested to characterize causing bacterium based on pathogenicity. The biochemical and physiological tests of that bacterium identified that as an Acidovorax avenae subsp. cattleyae. Therefore, we suggested to call that the new Phalaenopsis disease was bacterial brown spot caused by A.avenae subsp. cattleyae in Korea.

  • Background: Dental caries and periodontal disease are bacterial infectious disease, mainly caused by plaque, a bacterial colony deposited on the tooth surface and gum tissue. Dental plaque disclosants easily stain the dental plaque, making them effective for scaling and tooth brushing education. As the erythrosine typically contained in dental plaque disclosants is highly cytotoxic, a low toxicity additive is needed. In this study, we aimed to examine the natural pigments with negligible cytotoxicity but can effectively stain the dental plaques for use in dental plaque disclosants. Methods: The pigmentation of eight types of natural pigments was tested on bovine tongue and teeth, as well as on head and neck tissue sections of experimental ICR mice. The cytotoxicity of gingival epithelial cells was measured via MTT assay. Pigmentation was performed on the bovine tongue and tooth surface. Pigmentation in the oral environment was observed in four mandibular incisors. A 2 Tone was used as a control. Results: Of the eight types of natural pigments, purple and blue pigments were effective in coloring dental plaques on the enamel surface as well as in the head and neck tissue sections. Additionally, purple and blue pigments were visible on the surface of the bovine tongue. Red, pink, orange, green, purple, and yellow pigments showed strong cytotoxicity, whereas brown and blue pigments had relatively low cytotoxicity. Blue pigment was effective in staining the dental plaque of four mandibular incisors. Conclusion: We suggest that the blue pigment derived from Gardenia jasminoides Ellis (Rubiaceae), which is effective for coloring dental plaques and has low cytotoxicity, is useful as a naturally derived dental disclosant.
