Putative Secondary Structure of Human Hepatitis B Viral X mRNA

  • A putative secondary structure of the mRNA for the human hepatitis B virus (HBV) X gene is proposed based on not only chemical and enzymatic determination of its single- and double-stranded regions but also selection by the computer program MFOLD for energy minimum conformation under the constraints that the experimentally determined nucleotides were forced or prohibited to base pair. An RNA of 536 nucleotides including the 461-nucleotide HBV X mRNA sequence was synthesized in vitro by the phage T7 RNA polymerase transcription. The thermally renatured transcripts were subjected to chemical modifications with dimethylsulfate and kethoxal and enzymatic hydrolysis with single strand-specific RNase T1 and double strand-specific RNase V1, separately. The sites of modification and cleavage were detected by reverse transcriptase extension of 4 different primers. Many nucleotides could be assigned with high confidence, twenty in double-stranded and thirty-seven in Single-stranded regions. These nucleotides were forced and prohibited, respectively, to base pair in running the recursive RNA folding program MFOLD. The results suggest that 6 different regions (5 within X mRNA) of 14~23 nucleotides are Single-stranded. This putative structure provides a good working model and suggests potential target sites for antisense and ribozyme inhibitors and hybridization probes for the HBV X mRNA.

Speckle Noise Removal by Rank-ordered Differences Diffusion Filter (순위 차 확산 필터를 이용한 스페클 잡음 제거)

  • The purposes of this paper are to present a selection method of neighboring pixels whose local statistics are similar to the center pixel and combine the selection result with mean curvature diffusion filter to reduce noises in remote sensed imagery. The order of selection of neighboring pixels is critical, especially for finding a pixel belonging to the homogeneous region, since the statistics of the homogeneous region vary according to the selection order. An effective strategy for selecting neighboring pixels, which uses rank-order differences vector obtained by computing the intensity differences between the center pixel and neighboring pixels and arranging them in ascending order, is proposed in this paper. By using region growing method, we divide the elements of the rank-ordered differences vector into two groups, homogeneous rank-ordered differences vector and outlier rank-ordered differences vector. The mean curvature diffusion filter is combined with a line process, which chooses selectively diffusion coefficient of the neighboring pixels belonging into homogeneous rank-ordered differences vector. Experimental results using an aerial image and a TerraSAR-X satellite image showed that the proposed method reduced more efficiently noises than some conventional adaptive filters using all neighboring pixels in updating the center pixel.

  • Lines were developed from the two crosses, BY4 X NC 82 and BY 4 X BY 104, by bulk, backcross and anther-derived dihaploid methods of breeding , and their variations in major agronomic, chemical characters, heritability, and response to selection were compared. 1. The anther-derived dihaploid lines showed a greater genetic variability and heritability in characters investigated than the lines developed by the other two methods of breeding . However, those were Inferior In agronomic characters and yielded 15.4% less leaf tobacco than the lines developed by the bulk method. 2. The lines developed by bulk method were higher In the frequency of lines resistant to bacterial wilt and in the yield, but Its lines appeared later flowering. inferior leaf Quality, and higher total nitrogen contents than those developed by the backcross method of breeding. 3. In the population of the lines developed by the backcross method, bacterial wilt resistant lines were less frequent, but the lines with a good leaf quality were more frequent.

  • In this paper, we study the existence of classical and generalized solutions for nonlinear differential inclusions $x^{\prime}(t){\in}F(t,x(t))$ in Hilbert spaces in which the multifunction F on the right-hand side is hemicontinuous and satisfies the semimonotone condition or is condensing. Our existence results are obtained via the selection and fixed point methods by reducing the problem to an ordinary differential equation. We first prove the existence theorem in finite dimensional spaces and then we generalize the results to the infinite dimensional separable Hilbert spaces. Then we apply the results to prove the existence of the mild solution for semilinear evolution inclusions. At last, we give an example to illustrate the results obtained in the paper.

A Survey on Enterence Dose by Exposure Factors (X-선촬영 조건에 따른 피폭선량 조사연구)

  • By analyzing each part of expsure condition and the status of an entrance dose which is exposed to patients, this study reached the following conclusion. Since there is no standard in setting up an exposure condition, the technology practiced in each facility varies tremendously, and the entrance dose increased especially due to the improper selection of screen and grid and the shortage of a total amount of filtration in leaching the standard filtration amount. Entrance dose was, generally, turned out to be $2{\sim}3$ times as much as that of advanced countries, and there was big difference between facilities ; approximately 52 times inlateral of cervical vertebrae, 35 times in A-P of femur, 33 times in chest A-P, and 11 times in lumber A-P. Therefore, to minimize the entrance dose of a patient with thegreatest amount of image information, acquirement of technological know-how necessary for standardization of exposure condition for each part can be an important research task.

Confirmatory Factor Analysis of the Environmental Health Engagement Profile (환경적 건강 관여 측정도구의 확인적 요인 분석)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to review measurements of environmental health behavior and assess the construct validity of Environmental Health Engagement Profile (EHEP) through confirmatory factor analysis. Methods: The literature review was performed for selection of measurements. Confirmatory factor analysis with AMOS 19.0 was used for validation of EHEP. Results: The model fitness was not appropriate in the one-factor model; $x^2=91.11$ (df=5, p<.001), Comparative Fit Index (CFI)=8.19, Non Normed Fit Index (NNFI)=6.39, and Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA)=0.20. The model fitness was appropriate in the two-factor model; $x^2=3.19$ (df=1, p=.074), CFI=9.95, NNFI= 9.71, RMSEA=0.07. A modification of scale was found to be the most suitable for use in the investigation of environmental health behavior. Conclusion: This study confirms that a two-factor model underlies the concept of environmental health behavior. The review of measurements can help nurses and researchers to assess the environmental health behaviors.

SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF THE SPIN VECTORS OF THE DISK GALAXIES IN THE VIRGO CLUSTER

  • In order to investigate the spatial orientation of the spin vectors of galaxies in the Virgo cluster, we carried out a detailed identification of all the certain and possible member disk galaxies with four UK Schmidt Telescope (UKST) III a-j direct plates digitized by the Automated Plate Measuring System (APM). As a result, a relatively large and complete database with no selection effect of the member galaxies has been established. We provide the APM measured values of the position angle (P.A.) and diameters at the isophotal level of 24.5 $m_j / arcsec^2$. Based on this newly generated database, an initial study on the spatial orientation of the spin vectors of galaxies in the Virgo cluster is shown.

Weak Lensing Analysis On The Merging Galaxy Cluster Abell 115

  • The galaxy cluster Abell 115 shows ongoing merger features, which suggest that it might be in an intermediate phase of dynamical evolution. As merging clusters often show, the characteristic hints of A115's merging activities include radio relics, double X-ray peaks, and large offsets between the cluster member galaxies and the X-ray distributions. To constrain the exact stage of the merger, it is necessary to obtain its dark matter distribution. In this study, we carry out a precision weak lensing study of this interesting system based on Subaru images. We present our mass reconstruction together with descriptions on our core procedure of the analysis: Subaru data reduction, galaxy shape measurement, and source selection. We find that Abell 115 consists of two massive dark matter clumps, which closely follow the cluster galaxies. Our weak lensing mass estimate is a few factors lower than the published dynamical mass obtained from velocity dispersion. This large mass discrepancy may be attributed to a significant departure from dynamical equilibrium.

  • In this study, we determined the optimum electrode pair for measuring the abdominal pressure using bio-impedance method. Because impedance changes differ from a weight, a height, contractile force, volume of muscle and blood other or whatever of individuals, it was quantified using values of impedance change, correlation coefficient and SNR. Our results showed the optimum electrode pair (1, 9) which could detect impedance changes due to an increase of the intensity of the abdominal pressure. The correlation coefficient and quadratic function between the RMS values of EMG and the impedance changes were 0.87 and $y=0.0014x^2$+0.0620x+0.6958, respectively. It demonstrated that the abdominal pressure could be measured non-invasively and simply using bio-impedance method. We propose that this optimum electrode configuration would be useful for future studies involving the convenient measurement of abdominal pressure by ambulatory urodynamics monitoring study.

Analysis of Ceramics Using Scanning Electron Microscopy (주사전자현미경을 활용한 세라믹의 분석)

  • A ceramic is used as a key material in various fields. Accordingly, the use of scanning electron microscopy is increased for the purpose of evaluating the reliability and defects of advanced ceramic materials. The scanning electron microscope is developed to overcome the limitations of optical microscopy and uses accelerated electrons for imaging. Various signals such as SE, BSE and characteristic X-rays provide useful information about the surface microstructure of specimens and, the content and distribution of chemical components. The development of electron guns, such as FEG, and the improved lens system combined with the advanced in-lens detectors and STEM-in-SEM system have expanded the applications of SEM. Automated SEM-EDS analysis also greatly increases the amount of data, enabling more statistically reliable results. In addition, X-ray CT, XRF, and WDS, which are installed in scanning electron microscope, have transformed SEM a more versatile analytical equipment. The performance and specifications of the scanning electron microscope to evaluate ceramics were reviewed and the selection criteria for SEM analysis were described.
