  • The fatigue life of mechanical components and structures has been influenced by mechanical, material and environmental conditions. It is important to search out the load type and size for accurate cause of fracture at the damaged surface of material. The fractographic method by x-ray diffraction can utilize residual stress $\sigma$_r and half-value breadth B and find out the types and the mechanical conditions of fracture. This study showed the relationship between fracture mechanical parameters $\Delta$K, $K_{max}$ and X-ray residual stress $\sigma$_r for normalized SS41 steel with homogeneous crystal structure and M.E.F. dual phase steel(martensite encapsulated islands of ferrite). The fatigue crack propagation tests were carried out under stress ratios 0.1 and 0.5. The x-ray diffraction technique according to crack propatation direction was applied to fatigue fractured surface. Residual stress $\sigma$_r was independent on stress ratios by arrangement of $\Delta$K. The equation of $\sigma$_r$\Delta$K was established by the experimental data. Therefore, fracture mechanical parameters can be estimated can be estimated by the measurement of X-ray parameters.

  • Point Spread Function (PSF) is one of the most important optical characteristics for describing the performance of a telescope. And a concept of subpixelization is inevitable in evaluating the undersampled PSF (Shin and Sakurai 2009). Then, the internal structure of Yohkoh SXT CCD pixel is not uniform: For the top half of pixel area, the X-ray should pass a so-called gate structure where the charges are transferred to an output amplifier. This gate structure shows energy-dependent sensitivity (Tsuneta et al. 1991). For example, for Al-K (8.34 A) X-ray emission, the transmission of the polysilicon gate is about 0.9. Also, for the peak coronal response of the SXT thin filters, around 17 angstrom (0.729 keV), the transmission of the gate is about 0.6, falling off sharply towards longer wavelengths. It should be noted that this spectrally dependent non-uniform response of each CCD pixel will certainly have a noticeable effect on the properties of the PSF at longer wavelengths. Therefore, especially for analyzing the undersampled PSF of low energy source, a careful consideration of non-uniform internal pixel structure is required in determining the shape of the PSF core. The details on the effect of gate structure will be introduced in our presentation.

  • The relationships involving acid-consuming capacity and X-ray powder diffraction patterns of aluminum hydroxide gel were studied. The aging of antacid efficacy of aluminum hydroxide gel has also been characterized by using X-ray powder diffraction. The acid-consuming capacity decreased with progress of crystallization from amorphous alumino gel, and it was found that aged product at 80.deg. C had crystal structure of bohmite (.alpha.-Al.sub 2/O$_{2}$(OH)$_{2}$). It was also noted that the rate of aging decreased with decreasing pH of aluminum hydroxide gel.

  • Microstructure of the Fe-Ti system by ion beam mixing of multilayers at 300 K and 77 K has been studied in a wide composition range. The ion bombardment was carried out using $Ar^+$ ions at 80 keV. Using grazing angle x-ray diffraction we find that the lattice parameters of these bcc solid solutions are very close to that of $\alpha$-Fe. Extended x-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy have been performed to investgate the short-range order in the ion-beam-mixed state. The structure parameters, such as the interatomic distance and the coordination number are estmated from the Fe K-edge Fourier filtered EXAFS spectra. The interatomic distance is independent of the alloy concentration and it is almost constant. The study of x-ray absorption near-edge structure gives information on the individual $\rho$components of the partial densityof states of the conduction band of the Fe and Ti We also find that a charge transfer from Ti to Fe atoms takes place.

  • The crystal structure and magnetic properties of the $Mg_{1-x}Zn_xFeAlO_4\;(0{\leq}x\leq1.0)$ have been investigated by means of x-ray diffractometry and $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. The samples$(0{\leq}x\leq1.0)$ have been prepared by the ceramic sintering method. The x-ray diffraction pattern shows that the crystal structure of the samples is a cubic spinel type. The lattice constant has been found by extrapolation using the Nelson-Riley function and it increases slightly from $8.3496\AA\;to\;8.4128\AA$ with Zn concentration. The $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectra for x<0.4 show a superposition of two sextets ana a paramagnetic doublet at room temperature. The superparamagnetic doublet for x<0.4 seems to be due to Al ion in tetrahedral site by the superparamagnetic clustering effect.

  • Turbine blade is subject to cyclic bending force by steam pressure. Stress analysis by fractography is already established technology as means for seeking cause of fracture and has been widely employed. In the X-ray fractography, plastic deformation and residual stress near the fracture surface can by determined and information of internal structure of material can be obtained. Therefore, to find a fracture mechanism of torsion-mounted blade in nuclear power plant, based on the information from the fracture surface obtained by fatigue test, the correlation of X-ray parameter and fracture mechanics parameter was determined and then the load applied to actual broken turbine blade was predicted.

  • In this paper, we presents a sensor calibration technique using stereo X-ray images to provide efficient inspection of fast moving cargo objects. Stereo X-ray scanned images are acquired from a specially designed equipment which consists of a X-ray source, dual-linear array detector, and a conveyor system. Dual detector is installed so that rectified stereo X-ray images of objects are acquired. Using the stereo X-ray images, we carry out a sensor calibration to find the correspondences between the images and reconstruct 3-D shapes of real objects. Using the Image acquired from the stereo detectors with varying distances, we calculated the GCP(ground control point)of the image. And we figure out the error by comparing calculated GCP and GCP of the real object. The experimental results show the proposed technique can enhance the accuracy of stereo matching and give more efficient visualization for cargo inspection image.

  • The Si$_{1-x}$ Gex/Si surface alloy (x = 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5), which are prepared by solid source MBE and have the SiGe epilayer thickness of 50$\AA$, are annealed with different parameters. The surface structure analyses of the heterostructure samples are made on a triple-axis X-ray diffractometer in grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) geometry. It has been found that with different annealing time (1.5h, 18h, 64h) and annealing temperature (550 $^{\circ}C$, 750 $^{\circ}C$), the SiGe epilayer experienced different strain relaxation process, which was deduced from the GIXRD measurements of the in-plane (220) diffraction peak of Si(001) substrate and the relevant (220) surface diffraction of SiGe epilayer. The results show that the stress relieving and the lateral strain relaxation in the SiGe/Si heterostructure can be promoted by correct annealing, which is very helpful for the preparation of SiGe/Si strained superlattice with fine strain crystallization..

  • Clusters of galaxies are filled with X-ray emitted hot gas with the temperature of T ${\~}$2-10 keV. Recent X-ray observations have been revealing unexpectedly that many cluster cores have complicated, peculiar X-ray structures, which imply dynamical motion of the hot gas. Moreover, X-ray spectra indicate that radiative cooling of the cool gas is suppressed by unknown heating mechanisms (the 'cooling flow problem'). Here we propose a novel mechanism reproducing both the inhomogeneous structures and dynamics of the hot gas in the cluster cores, based on state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations. We showed that acoustic-gravity waves, which are naturally expected during the process of hierarchical structure formation of the universe, surge in the X-ray hot gas, causing a serous impact on the core. This reminds us of tsunamis on the ocean surging into an distant island. We found that the waves create fully-developed, stable turbulence, which reproduces the complicated structures in the core. Moreover, if the wave amplitude is large enough, they can suppress the cooling of the core. The turbulence could be detected in near-future space X-ray missions such as ASTRO-E2.

  • $YBa_2Cu_{3-x}Ni_xO_{7-{\delta}}$, with x = 0.05, 0.2, 0.4, 0.7 and 1.0 had been prepared by the thermal decomposition of corresponding nitrates. Among them, the sample with x = 0.05 shows above-liquid-$N_2$ temperature superconductivity with $T_c$ of 88.7K. According to the X-ray diffraction analysis, its crystal symmetry was estimated as orthorhombic with the lattice parameters of a = 3.866${\AA}$, b = 3.893${\AA}$, c = 11.715${\AA}$. The chemical composition of the sample was determined by electron probe microanalysis and the chemical composition around its grain boundaries was carefully studied by the X-ray line scanning technique. From the observed binding energy of Ni-$2p_{3/2}$ orbital electron (B.E. = 853 eV) measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the valency state of nickel stabilized in $YBa_2Cu_{2.95}Ni_{0.05}O_{7-{\delta}}$ oxide lattice could be determined to be Ni(II).
