This paper is to propose a hybrid memory adaptor using next-generation nonvolatile memory devices such as phase-change memory to improve the performance limitations of OpenStack-based object storage systems. The proposed system aims to improve the performance of the account and container servers for object metadata management. For this, the proposed system consists of locality-based dynamic page buffer, write buffer, and nonvolatile memory modules. Experimental results show that the proposed system improves the hit rate by 5.5% compared to the conventional system.
MPEG-4 is a standard for multimedia applications and provides a set of technologies to satisfy the needs of authors, service providers and end users alike. In this paper, we suggest a Real-time Multiple Circular Buffer (M4RM Buffer) model, which is suitable for streaming these MPEG-4 contents efficiently. M4RM buffer generates each structure of the buffer, which matches well with each object composing an MPEG-4 content, according to the transferred information, and manipulates multiple read/write operations only by its reference. It divides the decoder buffer and the composition buffer, which are described in the standard, by the unit of frame allocated to minimize the range of access. This buffer unit of a frame is allocated according to the object description. Also, it processes the objects synchronization within the buffer and provides APIs for an efficient buffer management to process the real-time user events. Based on the performance evaluation, we show that M4RM buffer model decreases the waiting time in a buffer frame, and so allows the real-time streaming of an MPEG-4 content using the smaller size of the memory block than IM1-2D and Window Media Player.
Recently, NAND flash memory has been used for a storage device in various mobile computing devices such as MP3 players, mobile phones and laptops because of its shock-resistant, low-power consumption, and none-volatile properties. However, due to the very distinct characteristics of flash memory, disk based systems and applications may result in severe performance degradation when directly adopting them on flash memory storage systems. Especially, when a B-tree is constructed, intensive overwrite operations may be caused by record inserting, deleting, and its reorganizing, This could result in severe performance degradation on NAND flash memory. In this paper, we propose an efficient buffer management scheme, called IBSF, which eliminates redundant index units in the index buffer and then delays the time that the index buffer is filled up. Consequently, IBSF significantly reduces the number of write operations to a flash memory when constructing a B-tree. We also show that IBSF yields a better performance on a flash memory by comparing it to the related technique called BFTL through various experiments.

Unlike modern Solid-State Drives with DRAM, DRAM-less SSDs do not have DRAM because they are cheap and consume less power. Obviously, they have performance degradation problem due to lack of DRAM in the controller and this problem can be alleviated by utilizing host memory buffer(HMB) feature of NVMe, which allows SSDs to utilize the DRAM of host. In this paper, we show that commercial DRAM-less SSDs surely exhibit lower I/O performance than other SSDs with DRAM, but they can be improved by utilizing the HMB feature. Through various experiments and analysis, we also show that DRAM-less SSDs mainly exploit the DRAM of host as mapping table cache rather than read cache or write buffer to improve I/O performance.

A memory access method that data are read with different sequences with writing order is a simple but important procedure in many image compression standards, such as JPEG, MPEG1/2/4, H.264, and HEVC. For real time processing, double buffering is widely used using two block sized buffers, that accesses buffers concurrently with alternative way to read and write. In some cases like a transpose memory in 2D DCT with a simple and regular access order, a single buffering which requires only single block sized buffer can be used. This paper shows that even in complex access orders there is a regularity among updating orders within a finite turns, and suggested an effective implementation method using a single block sized buffer to process concurrent read/write operation with different access orders.

This paper covers the performance evaluation of two flash memory-based file storages, NAND and NOR, which are the major flash types. To evaluate their performances, we set up separate file storages for the two types of flash memories on a PocketPC-based experimental platform. Using the platform, we measured and compared the I/O throughputs in terms of buffer size, amount of used space, and kernel-level write caching. According to the results from our experiments, the overall performance of the NAND-based storage is higher than that of NOR by up to 4.8 and 5.7 times in write and read throughputs, respectively. The experimental results show the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two schemes and provide insights which we believe assist in the design of flash memory-based file storages.

DRAM is commonly used as a smartphone memory medium, but extending its capacity is challenging due to DRAM's large battery consumption and density limit. Meanwhile, smartphone applications such as social network services need increasingly large memory, resulting in long latency due to additional storage accesses. To alleviate this situation, we adopt emerging nonvolatile memory (NVRAM) as smartphone's buffer cache and propose an efficient management scheme. The proposed scheme stores all dirty data in NVRAM, thereby reducing the number of storage accesses. Moreover, it separately exploits read and write histories of data accesses, leading to more efficient management of volatile and nonvolatile buffer caches, respectively. Trace-driven simulations show that the proposed scheme improves I/O performances significantly.

This paper proposes an efficient page-level mapping algorithm that reduces the erase count in the FTL for flash memory systems. By maintaining the weight for each write request in the request buffer, the proposed algorithm estimates the degree of temporal locality for each incoming write request. To exploit temporal locality deliberately for determination of hot request, the degree of temporal locality should be much higher than the reference point determined experimentally. While previous LRU algorithm treats a new write request to have high temporal locality, the proposed algorithm allows write requests that are estimated to have high temporal locality to access hot blocks to store hot data intensively. The pages are more frequently updated in hot blocks than warm blocks. A hot block that has most of invalid pages is always selected as victim block at Garbage Collection, which results in delayed erase operation and in reduced erase count. Experimental results show that erase count is reduced by 9.3% for real I/O workloads, when compared to the previous LRU algorithm.
With rapid growth in the amount of data transferred on the Internet, traditional storage systems have reached the limits of their capacity and performance. SAN (Storage Area Network), which connects hosts to disk with the Fibre Channel switches, provides one of the powerful solutions to scale the data storage and servers. In this environment, the maintenance of data consistency among hosts is an important issue because multiple hosts share the files on disks attached to the SAN. To preserve data consistency, each host can execute the disk I/O whenever disk read and write operations are requested. However, frequent disk I/O requests cause the deterioration of the overall performance of a SAN cluster. In this paper, we introduce a SANtopia global buffer manager to improve the performance of a SAN cluster reducing the number of disk I/Os. We describe the design and algorithms of the SANtopia global buffer manager, which provides a buffer cache sharing mechanism among the hosts in the SAN cluster. Micro-benchmark results to measure the performance of block I/O operations show that the global buffer manager achieves speed-up by the factor of 1.8-12.8 compared with the existing method using disk I/O operations. Also, File system micro-benchmark results show that SANtopia file system with the global buffer manager improves performance by the factor of 1.06 in case of directories and 1.14 in case of files compared with the file system without a global buffer manager.

Flash Memory which is light and strong external shock as storage of small electronics like smartphone, digital camera, car black box has been widely used. Since the operation speed of the read operation and the write operation are different from each other, and the flash memory has the feature that it is not possible to overwrite, the delete operation is added to solve these problems. Wear-leveling must also be considered, since the number of erase times of the flash memory is limited. Many studies have been conducted on the substitutional algorithms of flash memory based on these characteristics of recent flash memories. So, to solve the problem that has existing buffer replacement algorithm this thesis divide page into 6 groups and when proposed algorithm select victim page, it consider reference page frequency and page recency.
