Postural stability can reduce the likelihood of critical slip and fall accidents in workplaces. The present study aimed to analyze the effect of shoes type on the ability of postural control during quiet standing. The effect of workload on the body balance was also of primary concern. Thirteen healthy male undergraduate students participated voluntarily in the experimental study. Standing on a force plate with wearing slippers, sports shoes, or safety shoes, two-axis coordinate on subjects' center of pressures (COP) was obtained in the two levels, rest and workload. For the workload level, subjects performed treadmill exercise to reach the predetermined level of physical workload. By converting the position coordinates of COPs, the postural sway length in both anterior-posterior (AP) axis and medio-lateral (ML) axis was assessed. ANOVA results showed that, in AP direction, wearing slippers significantly increased the postural sway length compared to wearing sports shoes or safety shoes. No significant difference in the mean sway length in AP axis was observed between sports shoes and safety shoes. In ML direction, both the workload and the shoes type did not significantly affect the mean length of postural sway. However, the postural sway length increased marginally with the slippers especially during the workload condition. This study explains wearing slippers may interfere with the ability of postural control during quiet standing. Physical workload decreases the ability of postural stability further.
It is challenging to parallelize problems with irregular computation and communication. In this paper, we propose an asynchronous algorithm for balancing unpredictable workload on distributed-memory machines. By using an initial workload estimate, we first partition the computations such that the workload is distributed evenly across the processors. In addition, we perform task migrations dynamically for adapting to the evolving workload. To demonstrate the usefulness of our load balancing strategy, we conducted experiments on an IBM SP2 and a Cray T3D. Experimental results show that our task migration strategy can balance unpredictable workload with little overhead. Our code using C and MPI is portable onto other distributed-memory machines.
This paper evaluates forty different dispatching rules with respect to twenty different performance measures of job shop scheduling under seven levels of workload imbalance. Computer simulation is used as a tool to determine rankings of the dispatching rules for a given workload imbalance. The experiments results show rankings of dispatching rules are different in the job shop with unbalanced machine workloads. As variations of workload imbalance increase from 7% to 78%, the performance of dispatching rules is gradually deteriorated in measure related to completion time and due date. These results guide scheduling practitioners not only to choosing dispatching rules but also to developing the model of facility investment for workload balance, when there are different levels of workload imbalance.

COVID-19 pandemic forces college education to be rapidly switched from face-to-face education into remote education. Two inconsistent findings exist in previous study about remote learning. First, studies before COVID-19 pandemic found remote learning is an effective method, which provided students with higher achievement and improved their work-life balance. However, studies showed remote learning during COVID-19 pandemic is not as effective as expected because of technical issues, lack of motivations and even mental health issues. Second, findings from studies about remote learning impacts on workload and productivity during COVID-19 are also inconsistent. Therefore, this study aims to quantitatively measure college students' workload and productivity during COVID-19 of different types of tasks to provide a comprehensive and latest evaluation on remote learning. The findings of this study show remote learning slightly increases college students' total listening and speaking tasks workload, total reading and writing tasks workload. Furthermore, phone call, in-person meeting, online meeting and email workload increase significantly in remote learning. However, productivity for both listening and speaking, reading and writing tasks decreases after remote learning but no significant changes of productivity are found.
In this paper, we propose a dispatching algorithm for constructing a Factory Operating System (FOS) which can operate semiconductor fabrication factories more efficiently and effectively. We first define ten dispatching criteria and propose two methods to apply the defined dispatching criteria sequentially and simultaneously (i.e. fixed dispatching architecture). However the fixed type methods cannot apply the criteria adaptively by considering changes in the semiconductor fabrication factories. To overcome this type of weakness, an adaptive dispatching architecture is proposed for applying the dispatching criteria dynamically based on the factory status. The status can be determined by combining evaluation results from the following three status criteria; target movement, workload balance, and utilization rate. Results from the shop floor in past few periods showed that the proposed methodology gives a good performance with respect to the productivity, workload balance, and machine utilization. We can expect that the proposed adaptive dispatching architecture will be used as a useful tool for operating semiconductor fabrication factories more efficiently and effectively.

Background: Performing cognitive tasks and muscular fatigue have been shown to increase muscle activity of the lower extremity during quiet standing. A common intervention to reduce muscular fatigue is to provide a softer shoe-surface interface. However, little is known regarding how muscle activity is affected by softer shoe-surface interfaces during static standing. The purpose of this study was to assess lower extremity muscular activity during erect standing on three different standing surfaces, before and after an acute workload and during cognitive tasks. Methods: Surface electromyography was collected on ankle dorsiflexors and plantarflexors, and knee flexors and extensors of fifteen male participants. Dependent electromyography variables of mean, peak, root mean square, and cocontraction index were calculated and analyzed with a $2{\times}2{\times}3$ within-subject repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: Pre-workload muscle activity did not differ between surfaces and cognitive task conditions. However, greater muscle activity during post-workload balance assessment was found, specifically during the cognitive task. Cognitive task errors did not differ between surface and workload. Conclusions: The cognitive task after workload increased lower extremity muscular activity compared to quite standing, irrespective of the surface condition, suggesting an increased demand was placed on the postural control system as the result of both fatigue and cognitive task.
Cloud computing is an emerging technology based on the concept of enabling data access from anywhere, at any time, from any platform. The exponential growth of cloud users has resulted in the emergence of multiple issues, such as the workload imbalance between the virtual machines (VMs) of data centers in a cloud environment greatly impacting its overall performance. Our axis of research is the load balancing of a data center's VMs. It aims at reducing the degree of a load's imbalance between those VMs so that a better resource utilization will be provided, thus ensuring a greater quality of service. Our article focuses on two phases to balance the workload between the VMs. The first step will be the determination of the threshold of each VM before it can be considered overloaded. The second step will be a task allocation to the VMs by relying on an improved and faster version of the meta-heuristic "simulated annealing (SA)". We mainly focused on the acceptance probability of the SA, as, by modifying the content of the acceptance probability, we could ensure that the SA was able to offer a smart task distribution between the VMs in fewer loops than a classical usage of the SA.
One of the fastest-growing job categories for women in both the developed and the developing nations of the world is that of self-employment. In 1990 women accounted for 29% of all self employed workers. In Korea, self-employed women including unpaid family workers accounted for 40.4% of all female workers. They are in economically low status and have heavy workload. So, this study examines the real state and problems of self-employed woman. For this purpose, the transition of the number of self-employed women is nationally compared. And the statistical data and time use data on them and role conflict due to paid work and household work are presented. In the future society, self-employment will be a good alternative to self-realization and career for women. So, for self-employed women, following education is needed according to stages of business and characteristics of managers; entrepreneurship, management, and balance of work and family.
This paper addresses the static operator allocation problem in celluar manufacturing systems(CMS). An assembly environment is considered where each component going into the final product is manufactured in an individual cell. There are m such cells and it is required to manufacture n varieties of products where n>m. An mathematical model and two heuristic algorithms for static operators allocation to the cells to balance workload for minimizing makespan are developed and tested.
In usual synchronous parallel computing, workload balance is a crucial factor to reduce idle times of some processors that have finished their jobs earlier than others. However, it is difficult to achieve on a heterogeneous workstation clusters where the available computing power of each processor is unpredictable. As a way to overcome such a problem, the idea of asynchronous methods has grown out and is being increasingly used and studied, but there is none for eigenvalue problems yet. In this paper, we suggest a new asynchronous method to solve some singular matrix problems, that can also be used for finding a certain eigenvector of some matrices.
