Knowledge and Practices on Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Methods among Female Health Care Workers: A Sri Lankan Experience

  • Breast and cervical cancer are the most common causes of cancer mortality among women worldwide, but they are largely preventable. There are limited data on knowledge and practices on screening methods of breast and cervical cancers among female health care workers in Sri Lanka, in spite of having an organized screening programme islandwide. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 219 female health care workers including public health midwives (68.9%) selected from 6 districts in Sri Lanka using convenient sampling methods. A self-administered questionnaire was used as a pre-test in a capacity building training programme to collect the data. The mean (SD) duration of work experience of the respondents was 12 years and 52.5% were aged over 35 years. Most (76.7%) were married, and afamily history of cancer was reported by 24.2%. Over 98% knew about self breast examination. Even though 84.1% practiced it, only 47.9% practiced it on a monthly basis. Clinical breast examination and mammography were known by 94.1% and 64.3% respectively. Only 19.2% had undergone a clinical braest examination within one year and 3.6% had ever undergone a mamography. Only 76.3% knew that a Pap smear detects precancerous stage of cervical cancer. Among 169 married workers, 73.4% had never had a Pap smear and only 17.2% had got it done within the preceding 5 years. Among the reasons for not doing a pap smear within 5 years, 47.0% belived it as not nescessary, 17.3% due to fear/dislike, 23.2% as not having symptoms, 3% had not known about it and 3% not known about availability of services. The study findings suggest that the knowledge and practices on breast and cervical cancer screening methods among female health care workers need to be improved. Considering the role that health care workers play in communicating health behaviors to the general public, strengthening health education interventions for this group of females is essential.

제조업의 생산직 근로자의 상지 근골격계 증상에 영향을 미치는 요인 (Factors Affecting Musculoskeletal Symptoms of Manufacturing Workers)

  • This study aimed to examine the general characteristics of individual workers, psychosocial working environment, and ergonomic risk factors which affect the status of musculoskeletal disorders. Self-report was carried out for musculoskeletal symptoms and ergonomic risks in working environment in 856 production workers in 16 small to medium sized manufacturing companies. Musculoskeletal symptoms were examined with a standardized questionnaire, and ergonomic risks were evaluated with a qualitative self-administered instrument for the tasks related to musculoskeletal disorders. Major findings were as follows: 1) Complaint rate for musculoskeletal symptoms was higher in female, aged, married workers with longer working hours, less leisure/hobby activity, longer household working hours and history of disease or accident. 2) Complaint rate for musculoskeletal symptoms was significantly higher in workers with dissatisfaction, difficult tasks, and no self-control at work. 3) Complaint rate for musculoskeletal symptoms was significantly higher in workers involved in tasks with major ergonomic risk factors, and handling heavy equipment. 4) Explanatory power increased the model with the musculoskeletal symptoms as dependent variable and demographic variables, psychosocial working environment and ergonomic risk factors included, and total explanatory power of 18.6% revealed the significant effect. Based on the results, we can conclude that musculoskeletal symptoms in manufacturing workers are associated with individual demographic characteristics, psychosocial working environment and ergonomic risk factors.

Occupational Hazards and Safety Measures Amongst the Paint Factory Workers in Lagos, Nigeria

  • Background: The manufacture of paint involves a variety of processes that present with medical hazards. Safety initiatives are hence introduced to limit hazard exposures and promote workplace safety. This aim of this study is to assess the use of available control measures/initiatives in selected paint factories in Lagos West Senatorial District, Nigeria. Methods: A total of 400 randomly selected paint factory workers were involved in the study. A well-structured World Health Organization standard questionnaire was designed and distributed to the workers to elicit information on awareness to occupational hazards, use of personal protective devices, and commonly experienced adverse symptoms. Urine samples were obtained from 50 workers randomly selected from these 400 participants, and the concentrations of the heavy metals (lead, cadmium, arsenic, and chromium) were determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy. Results: The results show that 72.5% of the respondents are aware of the hazards associated with their jobs; 30% have had formal training on hazards and safety measures; 40% do not use personal protective devices, and 90% of the respondents reported symptoms relating to hazard exposure. There was a statistically significant (p < 0.05) increase in the mean heavy metal concentrations in the urine samples obtained from paint factory workers as compared with nonfactory workers. Conclusion: The need to develop effective frameworks that will initiate the integration and ensure implementation of safety regulations in paint factories is evident. Where these exist, there is a need to promote adherence to these practice guidelines.

FSM을 이용한 노인학대 발생요인에 대한 사회복지사의 의식구조 분석 (Analysis of Consciousness Structure of Social Workers for the Casual Factors of Elderly Abuse Using FSM)

  • 본 논문에서는 노인학대 발생요인에 대한 사회복지사의 의식구조에 관해 퍼지구조모델을 도출하고 이를 분석하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 첫째, 최상층의 노인학대행위는 중간층의 노인에 대한 태도, 업무과중과 연결되어 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 중간층의 노인에 대한 태도, 업무과중은 하층의 사회복지사의 성격, 클라이언트의 신체적 정신적 의존성, 클라이언트의 성격과 관련되는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 하층의 사회복지사의 성격, 노인에 대한 지식, 클라이언트의 성격, 클라이언트의 신체적 정신적 의존성은 중간층을 거치지 않고 최상층의 노인학대행위에 관여하는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 업무과중과 노인에 대한 태도는 같은 중간층에 위치하지만 업무과중이 노인에 대한 태도에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 사회복지사의 연령, 직업이미지, 교육, 처벌규정은 독립층으로 존재하여 노인학대행위 및 관련요인 간에 연관성이 없는 것으로 나타났다.

숙련 외국인 어선원 확보를 위한 제도 개선 방안 : 연근해 어업을 중심으로 (Policy Suggestions to Retain Skilled Migrant Fishermen in Korea : Focus on Offshore Fishing )

  • With the restriction of foreigners' entry into Korea due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fishery industry faced significant challenges in supplying migrant workers. In response to this, there is growing interest in methods that could facilitate the stable employment of migrant workers. This paper investigates whether the current system used for the employment of migrant workers in the fishery industry, which is highly dependent on them, adequately performs its function of providing a stable and skilled workforce amid the intensified labor shortage resulting from decreasing numbers of households with employment in the fishery and the aging Korean fishermen. To this end, past studies and government documents pertaining to the current system were analyzed, and a survey targeting the owners of offshore fishing boats that employ migrant workers was conducted. A total of 147 owners of fishing boats responded to the survey, and the data of 499 migrant workers employed by them were used for the analysis. The analysis indicated that the migrant fishermen had difficulty in acquiring minimum scores for the change of visa status according to the criteria for the Skilled Worker Points System. Furthermore, distinct differences were found between the characteristics and working conditions of migrant workers employed through the Employment Permit System (EPS) and the Foreign Seamen System. Based on this result, this paper suggests the reorganization of the skilled migrant worker system in the fishery industry and the expansion of the regional specialized visa pilot project.

사회복지사의 임파워먼트가 직무만족과 조직몰입에 미치는 영향 (Empowerment of the Social Worker Effect on Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment)

  • Purpose : Delegating authority to employees exerts a positive effect on the efficient operation and service of a company. In particular, investigating how the delegation of authority granted to social workers, who have a greater workload compared with those of other occupations, influences job satisfaction and commitment to the organization is meaningful. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of the empowerment of social workers on job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Methods : Toward this end, surveys were distributed to social workers employed at social welfare facilities in Daegu metropolitan city. Prior to the study, the researcher visited the institutions in which the social workers were working, explained the content in person, and conducted the self-administered survey accompanied by two research assistants who received prior training. Out of the 233 collected responses, those with unreliable responses and missing data were excluded, which left a sample of 224 for analysis. Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. Results : First, social workers who were older, had higher positions, and with longer years of service exhibited higher levels of empowerment in terms of differences in empowerment according to general characteristics. Second, for job satisfaction and organizational commitment according to general characteristics, the longer the period of employment, the higher the level of job satisfaction. Third, empowerment exerted an effect on job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and a positive correlation was found. Conclusion : The empowerment of social workers exerted a positive effect on job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Therefore, to improve service quality and the efficient operation of social welfare organizations in this practice, improving the empowerment of social workers is necessary by providing appropriate treatments, improving working environments, and providing appropriate discretion and decision-making authorities that are considered necessary for work performance.

원조전문직의 문화적 역량 선행요인에 관한 연구 - 사회복지사, 교사, 간호사, 사회복지공무원을 중심으로 - (A Study on the Antecedent Factors Affecting Helping Professions' Cultural Competence - Focusing on Social Workers, Teachers, Nurses, and Social Work Civil Servants -)

  • 본 연구는 사회복지사, 교사, 간호사, 사회복지공무원의 문화적 역량 현황과 선행요인을 파악하기 위해 진행되었다. 연구결과 교사의 문화적 역량이 가장 높았으며 사회복지사, 공무원, 간호사 순이었다. 문화적 역량 선행요인으로는 연령, 교육수준, 외국어구사여부, 다문화업무시간, 종사기간, 교육훈련시간, 조직의 지원이 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었으며, 각 직군 간에 유의미한 선행요인에도 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 연구결과를 토대로 문화적 역량을 제고하기 위한 정책적 방향과 실천적 함의를 제시하였다.

건설현장 고령근로자의 안전배치 방안에 관한 연구 (Reasonable Assignment of Aged People at Construction Site)

  • "low and old age trend" is a big social national problem in korea but also in foreign countries. The Government pursues a policy for aged people to take part in construction site as labours. Low childbirth and avoidance of 3D work kinds lead to exposure of aged workers to industry work places. According to korea department of labour, it is expected that 18% of total economic activity people in 2008 to 27.2% in 2018 be increased with age of more than 55 old years. Therefore, It is needed that more countermeasures for old workers should be taken for safer work conditions. This old workers with more than 55 old years contain major portion of accident occurrence in construction industry. It is found that accident rate in construction industry can be decreased if appropriate technical safety training is provided to them who wish to work at construction sites. Statistic analysis such as frequency, cross, logistic regression using program package SPSS 13.0 has been made after collecting questionnaire survey of more than 330 workers at construction sites.

보건관리대행 간호모형의 제안 (A Proposal of a Nursing Model Applicable to Group Occupational Health Service)

  • This study was conducted to propose a model for nursing performance in group occupational health service. To achieve such a goal, the writer choose and analysed two kinds of journals which were thought to be the most suitable for that purpose and authoritative on community health nursing: The Journal of Korean Community Nursing and the Journal of Korean Academic Society of Industrial Nursing. The total number of the articles analysed in this study was 16 and in the analysis of them the writer was specially concerned with the following questions: 1) Have there been any different performances in occupational health management between staying nurses and visiting ones? 2) What are the levels of knowledge, attitude, and practice of workers and how can we, on the basis of them, develop the program that workers are able to participate positively in ? the obtained conclusions are as follows. 1) Different performances are revealed between staying nurses and visiting ones: Common symptom management frequently appeared in staying nurses. Counseling, health education and follow-up care after medical examination were more frequently revealed in visiting nurses. 2) As for the lovel of knowledge, attitude, and practice of occupational health, workers have average one respectively. The major factors influencing the level of KAP of workers were area, age, sex and status. Counseling, health education, follow-up care after medical examination, and health promotion should be reinforced as core programs in group occupational health services. And for the part of visiting nurses, it is necessary to put more emphasis on efficiency training using the method of nursing process.

일부 노인 장기요양보호기관 종사자간의 서비스연계 조사 (The Analysis of Factors on the Service-Linkage of Long-term Care Workers for the Elderly)

  • Purpose: This study was to analyze the factors that affect the service relationship of long term care workers for the elderly and to provide basic resource for the successful connection of long term care services. Methods: 259 subjects who were engaged in long term care units completed a self-administered questionnaire that measured the extent of service linkage among one another. The Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ score determined the internal consistency of the acquired data and the discriminated validity was estimated by Pearson's correlation coefficient. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to investigate the influence of the known factors on the service linkage. Results: Acceptance and participation negatively influenced on the service linkage. Reliance, comprehension, recognition on service, and frequent contact with others positively activated the service linkage of long term care workers. Conclusion: The establishments of systemic training courses providing education that emphasizes reliability and recognizes other services, including work environment to contact easily are needed to improve the service-linkage of long-term care workers for the elderly.
