  • The results from a systematic study of the response of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy under quasi-static and dynamic loading at different strain rates and temperatures are presented. It has been shown that the work-hardening rate decreased as the strain rate and the strain increased. The correlations and predictions using modified KHL (Khan-Huang-Liang) viscoplastic constitutive model are compared with those from JC (Johnson-Cook) model and experimental observations. Overall, KHL model correlations and predictions compared much more favorably than the corresponding JC model predictions and correlations.

  • This paper addresses a theoretical approach to calculate the amount of the stored energy during high strain-rate deformations using atomistic level simulation. The dynamic behavior of materials at high strain-rate deformation are of great interest. At high strain-rates deformations, materials generate heat due to plastic work and the temperature rise can be significant, affecting various properties of the material. It is well known that a small percent of the energy input is stored in the material, and most of input energy is converted into heat. However, microscopic analysis has not been completed without construction of a material model, which can simulate the movement of dislocations and vacancies. A major cause of the temperature rise within materials is traditionally credited to dislocations, vacancies and other defects. In this study, an atomistic material model for FCC such as copper is used to calculate the stored energy.

  • Microstructures and mechanical properties of microalloyed cold forging steel and cold forged prototype automobile part are characterized. The work hardening according to the increase of plastic strain plays a major role in increasing the tensile strength of microalloyed cold forging steel during cold forming. On the other hand, inhomogeneous distribution of plastic strain causes variations in microstructure and mechanical properties. The relation between inhomogeneous distribution of plastic strain and variations in microstructure and mechanical properties is discussed. The variation of mechanical property in cold forged automobile part is analyzed using quantitative evaluation of plastic strain from finite element method.

  • By the use of a similar numerical method as that in the previous paper, the forming limit strain of bonded sheet metals is investigated, in which the FEM is applied and J2G(J2-Gotoh's corner theory) is utilized as the plasticity constitutive equation. Bonded two-layer sheets and sheets bonded with dissimilar sheets on both surface planes are stretched in a plane-strain state, with various work-hardening exponent n-values and thicknesses of each layer. Processes of shear-band formation in such composite sheets are clearly illustrated. It is concluded that, in the bonded state, the higher limiting strain of one layer is reduced due to the lower limiting strain of the other layer and vice versa, and does not necessarily obey the rule of linear combination of the limiting strain of each layer weighted according thickness.

  • This paper consists of two parts. One is finite element analysis of the redistribution of residual stresses of weld specimen by cutting. This work is necessary to predict the actual residual stress distribution of weld specimens used in fatigue test. The other subject is to calculate the relaxation of residual stress and the strain field induced by cyclic loading. To obtain fatigue life of weldment, the value of strain amplitude at each position is necessary, for example in the strain-life approach, and the numerical results can be used to verify experimental strain measurements. Thermo mechanical finite element analyses were conducted on the commercial package ABAQUS.

  • As a tool for strain measurement to work with screw driven or hydraulic material test systems, in which mechanical vibration is inherent, SSDG (Speckle Strain/Displacement Gage), ESP (Electronic Speckle Photography) and its 3-dimension version SDSP are evaluated for the theory and practical appliance. Through tension test of steel strips, their validity and shortcomings are examined. As the results, it has been shown that, although SSDG and ESP provide direct measurement of in-plane strain in one direction, they are so sensitive to the out-plane displacement. On the other hand, SDSP which is aided with DIC (Digital Image Correlation) technique to trace the movement of the speckles provides not only in-plane 2-dimensional displacement field, but also out-of-plane displacement simultaneously. However, because the DIC is time-consuming, not automated yet and it needs post-processing to evaluate strain from the displacement field, SDSP appears to be not adequate as a real time sensor.

  • Hopkinson bar dynamic test under strain rates ranging from 2000 $s^{-1}$ to 8000 $s^{-1}$ at room temperature revealed that the flow stress of tungsten heavy alloys depended strongly on the strain, strain rate, and the content of molybdenum. The variation of flow stress was caused by the competition between work hardening and heat softening in the materials at different strain rates. The high temperature strength of the matrix phase was increased by the addition of molybdenum, which enhanced the strength of the tungsten heavy alloys in high strain rate test.

  • In this work, effects of hyper-elastic rubber material properties on the indentation load-deflection curve and subindenter deformation are first examined via [mite element (FE) analyses. An optimal data acquisition spot is selected, which features maximum strain energy density and negligible frictional effect. We then contrive two normalized functions. which map an indentation load vs. deflection curve into a strain energy density vs. first invariant curve. From the strain energy density vs. first invariant curve, we can extract the rubber material properties. This new spherical indentation approach produces the rubber material properties in a manner more effective than the common uniaxial tensile/compression tests. The indentation approach successfully measures the rubber material properties and the corresponding nominal stress.strain curve with an average error less than 3%.

  • A mesoscale channel was designed to observe the flame stabilization at low strain rate conditions (< $10s^{-1}$). At this condition, the behavior of partially premixed flame was explored by changing a channel size and the oxygen ratio in the oxidant. In this work, experiment is conducted for propane case and it was compared with methane case of previous one. Conclusively, it can be observed that the strain rate of flame extinction and starting point of oscillation were varied with oxygen ratio. Moreover we can understand the effects of enhanced oxygen ratio of oxidant and flame behavior at low strain rate conditions.

  • This paper discusses the use of the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique for the displacement and strain measurements of a wet lay-up composite wing. As opposed to classical strain gages, DIC allows to conduct full field strain analysis of simple to complex structural parts. In this work, wing-up bending tests and measurements of the composite wing of the Dardo Aspect by CFM Air are carried out through an ad-hoc test rig and the Q-400 DIC system by Dantec Dynamics. Also, the results are used to validate a finite element model of the structure under investigation.
