  • We predict the rolled-strip profile for a 6-high mill using thin rolling theory and a numerical model. In the numerical model, we calculate the distributions of the contact pressures between the rolls and the rolling pressure between the strip and the work roll in the transverse direction using the geometric structure of the 6-high mill and the boundary conditions. We determine the distribution of the rolling pressure in the rolling direction via a thin-foil rolling model using Fleck's theory. We calculate the three-dimensional elastic deformation of the work roll using the pressures of the width and rolling directions. We then obtain the three-dimensional strip profile via the elastic deformation of the work roll during the rolling process. The profile is verified by a thin cold-rolling test and FE simulation.

  • An, FE-based, on-line model is presented for the rapid and precise prediction of roll thermal profile in hot strip rolling. The validity of the model is demonstrated through comparison with FE-based off-line model which was verified by measurements. Also demonstrated is its capability of reflecting the effect of diverse process variables.

  • A full finite element (FE)-based approach is presented for the precision analysis of the strip profile in flat rolling. Basic FE models for the analysis of the mechanical behavior of the strip and of the rolls are described in detail. Also described is an iterative strategy for a rigorous treatment of the mechanical contact occurring at the roll-strip interface and at the roll-roll interface. Then, presented is an integrated FE process model for the coupled analysis of the mechanical behavior of the strip, work roll, and backup roll in four-high mill. A series of process simulation are conducted and the results are compared with the measurements made in hot and cold rolling experiments.

  • Good shape on flat rolled product is necessary to meet today's customer quality requirement. To meet the increasing demand in quality of strip shape from downstream customers, POSCO has replaced the Automatic Shape Control(ASC) system with the existing one that had used noncontact type measuring system at No.2 Cold Rolling Mill, Pohang works in October, 1995. The strip shape is influenced by the profile, roll crown, bending control, skew control system, as well as work roll cooling system. We have used ASC to adjust those factors in Cold Rolling Mill that could get a satisfactory result, almost less than .+-.5 1-unit deviation from the target shape. However, the downstream customer(i.e. Continuos Annealing Line) wants a good shape not only at the moment of exit of roll bite, but after rolling without tension. In this investigation, the difference will be discussed and how deal with this problem.

  • The aim of the current study was to develop an advanced prediction model for the slab width spread during hot rough rolling. Rough rolling consists of both vertical rolling using a set of profiled edger rolls and horizontal rolling using a set of plain work rolls. FE-simulations were performed to investigate the influences of process variables such as initial slab width, initial thickness, sizing draft, edger roll draft and work roll draft on the final slab width variation. From a statistical analysis of the simulation results, an advanced model, which can predict the slab width spread during the edger rolling and horizontal rolling, was developed. The experimental hot rolling trials showed that the newly developed model provided fairly accurate predictions on the slab width spread during hot rough rolling process using a profiled edger rolls.

  • In the present work a methodology to minimize short channel effects (SCEs) by modulating the effective channel length is proposed to design 25 nm single and double gate-source/drain underlap MOSFETs. The analysis is based on the evaluation of the ratio of effective channel length to natural/ characteristic length. Our results show that for this ratio to be greater than 2, steeper source/drain doping gradients along with wider source/drain roll-off widths will be required for both devices. In order to enhance short channel immunity, the ratio of source/drain roll-off width to lateral straggle should be greater than 2 for a wide range of source/drain doping gradients.

  • Design and Manufacturing processes of Ti-6Al-4V profiled ring-products were investigated with three-dimensional FEM simulation and experimental analyses. FEM simulation for the ring-rolling process was used to calculate the state variables such as strain, strain rate and temperature. In the simulation results of strain and temperature distributions for a plane ring rolling process, the strain level at the surface area is higher than that at the mid-plane, but the temperature level at the surface area is lower than that at mid-plane due to heat transfer between the workpiece and the work roll. These distributions showed a great influence on the evolution of microstructure in different positions. In order to induce the uniform deformation of the profile ring and reduce the applied load, the final blank was prepared by two-step processes. The mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy ring products made in this work were investigated with tensile and impact tests and analyzed with the evolution of microstructures during the ring rolling process.

  • This paper summarizes the results of a numerical study conducted to analyze the effect of selected process parameters on material flow and thread profile in thread rolling of large diameter blanks. Based on the previous work where a plane strain mode was found to provide a reasonable approximation of the thread rolling process, the effect of varying thread form, friction factor, flow stress, and blank diameter on effective strain and thread height was analyzed using the finite element code DEFORM. This study show that effective strain for flank angle, that blank diameter had important effect on the as-rolled thread while flow stress, friction factor, and crest round of dies had significant impact on effective strain at the thread root and crest and load of thread rolling. While the rate of strain harding was found to have an effect on the crest profile, the results indicate that it is the primary factor responsible for seam formation in rolled threads.

  • The strip profile and shape control is one of the most important technologies in Hot Rolling Mill System. Because the unbalance of strip´s shape and wave appearance between stands has a bad effect on Hot Rolling Mill System by making the inferior thickness, strip´s damage and so forth in factories. Many competition Plate Mill introduced shape control system, for example, pair cross-mill, work roll bender, which includes shape measuring instruments and shape control mathematical models. Shape meter, which is equipped for flatness, only does feedback control at the top of coil. And, for crown, we depend on initial setup value and there is no feedback control. Therefore we predict the shape of strip using rolling pressure, bender force and tension of inter-stand in ...

  • Halo pocket implantation in MOSFETs, which is known to be an efficient method to provent the punchthrough and threshold voltage roll-off phenomena, decreases the drain current of MOSFET devices. Although the decrease of the drain current in halo structure MOSFET is usually explained in terms of the increase of the threshold voltage, more decrease in the drain current than is predicted by the increased threshold voltage has experimentally been observed. In this work, the effect of halo doping profile on the drain current degradation is investigated in terms of the field distribution along the channel. Effective mobility model of the halo MOSFETs due to pocket implantation is presented and the degradation of the mobility is shown to be effective in the further decrease of the drain current. Present model is shown to be in good agreement with experimental results.
