  • The preservation has been conducted for wooden ship timber excavated from Bonghwang-Dong, Gimhae, Korea. The species were analyzed for conservation as pre-treatment. Outer panel was analyzed as Cinnamomum spp. and trapezoid wooden material, wooden wedge was Cryptomeria japonica D. Don.. Wooden ship timber have been treated by vacuum-freeze drying after impregnation with aqueous PEG#3,350 solution(almost 45%). The timber of Bonghwang-Dong ship is considered as Japanese ship that many data such as conformation of ship, location of site, japanese artifact of around site were confirmed. In addition, The ship timber give us the important information about the international trade with Japan.

  • The most widely used material in furniture is wood. It is not only because it has good machinability and can be easily accessed, but also it is eco-friendly and human-friendly. Such material has been continuously being used for furniture and its machining method has been being actively researched and developed. Lumber has and has developed its own machining method. The conventional lumber machining method is difficult to make various types of furniture because it focuses on solving lumber's own modification problem due to the swelling and shrinking, and durability. Considering such characteristic of the material, a method to make it light and durable has been being researched and possibilities were found in wooden ships. Wooden ships are ships made of lumber, and are light and strong to be used in water. Also, in order to reduce the water resistance, it has streamlined curves so is formatively beautiful. The elegant curves and light and strong structure showed sufficient possibility to be used in furniture. Thus, the purpose of this study is to find a method to make various shapes of lumber lightly and strongly, using the production method of wooden ships, and to use this production method in designing furniture to propose a new form and structure of bench design, differentiating from conventional monotypic furniture.

  • The measurement in the manufacturing process of curved ship hull plates still depends on wooden templates as a standard instrument. The metrology-enabled automation in the shipbuilding process has been challenged instead of line measurement with wooden templates. The developed measurement system consists of a CCD camera, multiple structured laser sources and 3-DOF motion device. The system carries out measurement of curved profiles for large scale plates by an optical triangulation method. The results of experiment conducted in a manufacturing shop demonstrate the accurate and robust performance.

  • A canoe is one of the most popular boats in leisure on the water. Generally canoe has been built by good wooden strips. And canoe built by FRP is used for business recently. But by the users' demands for good quality and the restriction to environmental pollution the wooden canoes are required for personal and canoe building business. The modern wooden canoes were built by the strip construction method are used typically. However it is not suitable for the mass productivity requires effective resource operations and managements of men, materials, times, and price. On this paper the new construction method, called the piling-up laminated construction method, is studied to building a canoe using the piling-up with the laminated wooden plates gives more productivity than the others. First a canoe with various curved surfaces is designed from 3D design system. And the hull of canoe model is divided horizontally to generating the laminated plates that will be converting real wooden plates available from the market and will be routed by the manufacturing machine. After the simulating and analyzing of piling-up with the laminated plates, the canoe is building with less times, less men, less resources, and lower price than other method, avoid of the requirements of additional building tools. On the next paper the constructing of a real canoe using the manufactured wooden plates will be studied.

  • This study examined the food culture of the Koryo Dynasty during the early 13th century based on the records of wooden tablets and marine relics from the 1st and 2nd ships of Mado wrecked at sea off Taean while sailing for Gaegyeong containing various types of grain paid as taxes and tributes. The recipients of the cargo on the 1st ship of Mado were bureaucrats living in Gaegyeong during the period of the military regime of the Koryo Dynasty, and the place of embarkation was the inlet around Haenam (Juksan Prefecture) and Naju (Hoijin Prefecture) in Jolla-do. On wooden tablets were recorded 37 items of rice, cereal, and fermented foods. The measures used in the records were seok [石-20 du (斗)] for cereal, seok [15 du, 20 du] for fermented soybean paste, and pot (缸) and volume (斗) for salted fish. The places of embarkation on the 2nd ship of Mado were Jeongeup (Gobu Prefecture), Gochang (Jangsa Prefecture, Musong Prefecture), etc. On wooden tablets were recorded 29 items of rice, cereal, fermented foods, seasame oil, and honey. The volume measure for yeast guk (麴), the fermentative organism for rice wine, was nang [囊-geun (斤)], and the measure for sesame oil and honey, which were materials of oil-and-honey pastries and confections, was joon (樽-seong, 盛). Honey and sesame oil were luxury foods for the upper-class people of the Koryo Dynasty, and they were carried in high-quality inlaid celadon vases in Meibyung style. Food names and measures written on wooden tablets and actual artifacts found in the 1st and 2nd ships of Mado are valuable materials for research into agriculture, cereal, and fermented foods of the Koryo Dynasty in the early 13th century. Besides, relics such as grains and bones of fish and animals from the Koryo Dynasty are expected to provide crucial information usable in studies on food history of the Korean Peninsula.

  • There were some cases in the past that waterlogged wooden finds were neglected and damaged severely because adequate methods of conservation processing could not be found. However, since a wooden ship unearthed in Anapji of Kyongju was processed by poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) impregnation method in 1975, most of waterlogged wooden finds have been processed by diverse scientific methods. Most commonly-used conservation processing methods of waterlogged wooden finds in Korea are PEG impregnation method, alcohol-ether-resin method and vacuum freeze-drying method. New methods developed recently in Europe and Japan such as sucrose method, sugar-alcohol method and higher alcohol method are also being studied here. The most important task in conservation processing of waterlogged wood is to find good impregnation materials suitable to Korean climate and environments and develop their application methods. For efficient conservation processing, it is important to know the natures of finds and impregnation materials and relation between impregnation and drying condition. To achieve it, many experiments and studies are needed.

  • The ship hull construction materials of fishing boat has changed in order that wooden, steel, and fiber glass reinforced plastic(FRP). The fishing boat made from FRP has increased every year because that materials has proved excellent of the characteries for fishing boats construction members. Recently, FRP tend towards evasion for the pollution of air enviroment. Therefore. the materials of fishing boat construction must be exchanged by another one. Aluminium alloys must be recommended for fishing boats construction mateials because that is light weight and corrosion resisting in the sea water. Regulation of the standard of ship hull construction for aluminium alloys fishing boats did not enact laws in the interior now. Therefore, this regulation was studied by the following items. that is Rudder, Bottom construction, Side hull plate construction, Deck plate construction, piller. Water tight bulkhead, Deep tank, Fish tank, Stern construction, Superstructure, Deck house construction, Hatch, Engine room opening, Hatch opening, Bulwark, Welding and Rivet etc. A study on the regulation will be contributed to enact laws for fishing boat construction of aluminium alloys.

  • We conducted species identification on the wooden materials of 10 pieces and grasses which come out from the seabed relics in Sibidongpado, Gunsan. This site is presumed to date from the Goryeo's relics. Species identification show that pieces of ship are pinus(4 pieces), ulmus(1 piece), platcarya(1 piece). Lepidobalanus(2 pieces), platcarya(2 pieces) came out from the others. Grasses are located between ceramics that were piled up. Grasses are supposed to be Phragmites Trin.
