신장(新疆) 위구르자치구 지역의 불탑형식 - 『대당서역기(大唐西域記)』의 기록과 현존 유구를 중심으로 - (A Study on the Stupas in Xinjiang Uyghur Area - Focused on Da Tang Xi-Yu-Ji(大唐西域記) and Stupa Remains -)

  • This study examines the process of the introduction of stupa, which has originated in India, to the Xinjiang Uyghur region and the features of the stupas in the Xinjiang Uyghur region in detail. This study examines the layout of the buildings in temple compounds and the types, structural elements, and construction methods of the stupas in the Xinjiang Uyghur region in particular by looking into the content of the Da Tang Xi Yu Ji and remaining stupas, which provide examples of stupas at the time. This study finds that due to the characteristics of dry deserts, stupas in Xinjiang Uyghur region, where assimilation between Eastern and Western cultures is seen, were mostly made by pressing clay into a mold and had no interior spaces. Also, construction materials and techniques had been developed and improved in a way that enabled stupas to combat the challenging desert conditions. However, the stupas in this region differed significantly from the wooden tower-like stupas discovered in central China(zhongyuan 中原). The shape of the dome of most stupas in Xinjiang Uyghur region was chosen under the influence of the Gandharan style. Some of the stupas in the region have taken the general forms of the wooden stupas and the others have taken many forms, from cylindrical drums to towers. Also, there have been forests of stupas and stupas similar in form to chaityas and stupas of Vajrayana. Such different forms were transformed and modified through regional history and it was related to the peoples and cultures that produced and used stupas. Stupas evolved into distinct forms in Xinjiang Uyghur region in this way.

일본(日本)의 고상식(高床式) 건축(建築)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (A study on the Upper Risen Architecture of Japan)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the architectural character of the upper risen architecture(高床式 建築) in Japan. There are few upper risen architecture and architectural remains in Korea. Until now most of Korean researcher recognized that the upper risen architecture is southern regions' form. But there are a few numbers of upper risen buildings in northern regions of Korea and China. Therefore we need to compare northern and southern regions' upper risen architecture. The scope of this study is architectural remains, sites and present buildings about upper risen architecture in Japan. The period of this study is from third to eighth century. The method of this study is the analyses of site plan(the ratio of front and side length) and construction about Japanese Architecture. And then this study compare Japanese with other countries in Korean and Chinese upper risen architecture. Results of the study are below. 1. In Japan, upper risen architecture was introduced into southern regions(southern China and southeast Asia) with rice farming culture. 2. After introduced upper risen architecture, they were influenced many architectural technique of Korean and Chinese. 3. There were many technical improvement(such as foundation stone standing method, high technical wooden frame structure and adaptable triangle frame wall at moisture) the Japanese upper risen architecture in Nara Period(奈良時代). 4. As the results, I found out that there were many similarity Korea and Japan in upper risen architecture. I think that we will try continuous to study another regions' upper risen architecture in order to define conclusion.

1946년 조선건축기술단 주최 국민주택 설계도안 현상모집의 재고찰 (A Study on the Housing Competition Promoted by Cho-Sun Architectural Engineering Group in 1946)

  • This study examined details and characteristics of prizewinning plans of housing competition promoted by korean architects group in 1946. The competition were held for the first since Liberation of Korea, and had practical purpose to construct houses to solve severe shortage of housing. This study found common trends of housing plan by prizewinning architects, analyzing architectural characteristics of prizewinning plans. Architects pursued western style living for renewed living conditions of people, planning precedent houses to put reception room at the heart of dwelling spaces and centralize them using entrance hall or corridor for traffic lines. Also, they arranged reception room and family room facing to the south and placed lavatory or bathroom inside of houses for hygiene. Kitchens were finished with wooden floor to keep same level of reception room and equipped with sink, kitchen table, pantry for convenient housekeeping. The result of competition become a basis of constructing houses by housing administration in 1947, and more important foundation for planning typical public houses of national housing corporation.

조선시대(朝鮮時代) 교통건축(交通建築)으로서의 원우(院宇)에 관한 연구(硏究) (A Study on the WonWoo as the Transportation Architecture in the Chosun Dynasty)

  • After the period of the Three Kingdoms Korean transportation architecture had been changed from the characteristics of the administration organization supporting the kings ruling system and gradually the characteristics as transportation architecture had cleared and diversified in accordance with the functions and characteristics of it. With this it was found that Korean transportation architecture like YukSa(驛舍), ChamYuk(站驛), GaekSa(客舍), JinSa(津舍), DoSa(渡舍), WonWoo(院字), JuMak(酒幕) and etc. had been developed variously and the architectural characteristics had developed with the functions and characteristics of transportation architecture. Some of them ,for example YukSa, ChamYuk, GaekSa, JinSa, DoSa, had the characteristics of the government office, so they had fundamental dignity of Korean wooden architecture on tile roof. But the WonWoo which was used by all of the people from the king to the people, had the characteristics of half-government and half-private. And the space of WonWoo was divided by the social position, the sex and the difference of temperature between summer and winter. And it was mostly located at the place away from the haunts of men, the form of it was the mud wall hut of the straw-thatched cottage like Sinhyewon of Mungyungsaejae and it was different from the station building of the characteristics of government office.

전라남도 4칸 홑집의 마루배치에 관한 조사연구 (A Study on Typology of Maru's Placement in Korean Traditional Single Houses of Four Kan in Chonnam Province)

  • Many researches on the typology of 'Maru' (Wooden deck) in Korean traditional houses have mainly focused on the high-class houses in the central region of Korea. They were mainly concerned on defining Maru's typology by social status of the owner, based on the researches regarding its physical and spatial properties. Maru in the high-class traditional houses has been served as an essential architectural feature showing the social status of owners as well as adapting in the region of humid and hot summer. This research investigated the typology of Maru's placement in traditional single houses of four Kan in Chonnam province, which shows many differences in its placement according to the regions. Research results show that the typology of Maru's placement and openness is different with the location of houses within the region. This difference affects on the circulation of movement, which eventually affects on the pattern of space use. The difference is also very likely to be affected by the natural environment of geography and climate of the region.

16세기를 전후한 반가(班家)의 형식변화(形式變化)와 가예(家禮) (Family Ritual and the Plan Change of the Yangban Houses in the 16th Century)

  • Most of the studies on Yangban Houses dealt with the existing houses which were constructed, in most part, after the 17th century. Therefore it is important to identify the actual process of change from before the 17th century which is critical in understanding the history of residential architecture of the Chosun Dynasty. This study aims to clarify that the architectural condition after the 17th century is the result of the major change in sound the 16th century, and the prime motivation of that change was initiated by the family ritual which become very important social and idealogical base of the change. To be able to practice the family ritual, the spatial arrangement had to be changed, Man's quarter had to be enlarged, which a stone-floored room was added on one side of the centural wooden floor of the lady's quarter. Also, family shrine was erected on eastern side of the site. Thus, unless the major change in the 16th century, which was caused by the practice of family ritual, is understood, the study of historical background of Yangban houses can never be complete.

  • Today, the whole world is going through a big chaos due to the COVID-19, but paradoxically, the emergence of COVID-19 has been leading to the need for sustainable development, such as Green New Deal that can improve global warming and carbon emissions, and the need for sustainable architecture is growing bigger and bigger in the architectural field as well. The level of CLT buildings in Korea is at a very rudimentary stage, while CLT buildings remedying existing wooden buildings are getting the spotlight among European countries for sustainable architecture. This study was conducted to categorize structure layer compositions of overseas CLT buildings and analyze architectural techniques and materials applied by collecting and analyzing information about CLT structure layer compositions of overseas CLT building-related institutions, companies and cases. When classifying structure layer compositions of foreign CLT buildings depending on the roles of layers. it was revealed that exterior wall structure layers were combined and organized within a sequence of external finishing, ventilation, waterproof, board, external insulation, airtightness, structure, airtightness, interior insulation, interior finishing, sloped roof structure layers were external finishing, ventilation, waterproof, board, external insulation, airtightness, structure, airtightness, interior insulation, interior finishing, flat roof structure layers were external finishing, ventilation, waterproof, planking wood, external insulation, waterproof, external insulation, airtightness, structure, airtightness, interior insulation, interior finishing.

조선 전·중기 주택의 ㄱ자 꺾음부에서 공간기능에 따른 공간형식의 변화 (Change of Spatial Form according to Spatial Function at ㄱ-shaped Corner Spaces of Houses in Early·Middle Joseon Dynasty)

  • In the late Koryo Dynasty~early Joseon Dynasty, nationwide distribution of Ondol prompted the formation of ㄱ-shaped corner space. From this background, the spatial form changed according to the space function. In the case where the ondol is located in the bent portion, it would have formed a similar spatial form nationwide at the beginning of the 16th century. Until the middle of the 16th century the receptionists and the family rituals were carried out in the inner of the house, so ㄱ-shaped corner space gradually expanded. Also a special structure type using fultile rafters was used to cover the upper structure of the extended folded space. From the 17th century, ㄱ-shaped corner space was varied from wide and high to narrow and low. In addition to this, the space function of ㄱ-shaped corner is a small hall, a wooden floored room, and the kitchen. And Their spatial form also changes over time.

Investigation of design methods in calculating the load-carrying capacity of mortise-tenon joint of timber structure

  • This study compares two prominent design provisions, National Design Specification (NDS) and Eurocode 5, on load-carrying capacity calculations and failure analysis for mortise-tenon joints. Design procedures of double-shear connection from both provisions were used to calculate load-carrying capacity of mortise-tenon joints with eight different bolt sizes. From this calculation, the result was validated using finite element analysis and failure criteria models. Although both provisions share similar failure modes, their distinct calculation methods significantly influence the design load-carrying capacity values. Notably, Eurocode 5 predicts a 6% higher design load-carrying capacity for mortise-tenon joints with varying bolt diameters under horizontal loads and 14% higher under vertical loads compared to NDS. However, the results from failure criteria models indicate that NDS closely aligns with the actual load-carrying capacity. This indicates that Eurocode 5 presents a less conservative design and potentially requires fewer fasteners in the final timber connection design. This evaluation initiates the potential for the development of a wider range of timber connections, including mortise-tenon joints with wooden pegs.

목조건축문화재 원형유지를 위한 문화재돌봄 모니터링과 예방보존 (Monitoring and Preventive Preservation of Cultural Heritages to Maintain Original Wooden Architectural Cultural Heritage)

  • 목조건축문화재는 그 나라의 정체성을 보여주는 가시적인 유물 가운데 하나이다. 문화재의 원형에 대한 개념이 정확하게 이해되지 않은 상태에서도 문화재는 '원형보존' 또는 '원형유지'를 보존관리의 원칙으로 삼았다. 더구나 요즈음은 국제적인 보존원칙의 흐름을 따라 문화재를 '역사적 대상물로의 가치'로서 중요하게 생각하고 있다. 이 논문은 목조건축문화재의 원형유지를 위해 어떤 부분을 모니터링 해야 하는가의 범위와 내용을 정해 보기 위한 시도의 결과이다. 목조건축문화재의 모니터링에 있어서 첫 번째로 해야 할 부분은 지면과 기단의 상태를 점검하는 일이다. 지면과 기단은 목조건축문화재가 오랫동안 서 있을 수 있도록 모든 힘을 받아 주는 곳이기 때문이다. 따라서 기단부와 낙수의 관계, 기단부의 침하 유무, 배수로의 유무와 구배 상태 확인 등을 모니터링 하였다. 두 번째는 기둥 부분이다. 기둥 기울음의 유무, 귀솟음과 안쏠림의 기법의 유무, 기둥 치수의 변화 유무, 기둥과 초석의 변위 발생 등을 확인하는 일이다. 기둥의 불안정성은 각 부재와의 이음과 맞춤 부분의 파손을 발생시키고 이로써 벽체의 손상까지로 이어지는 물리적 변화를 초래하기 때문이다. 세 번째는 지붕의 번와 유무, 번와에 따른 신·구 기와의 점유상태, 그에 따른 편심하중의 유무, 강우·강설에 의한 기와 사이의 이격 발생, 누수의 유무를 점검하였다. 지붕은 기와의 이격이나 파손에 의해 건물 내부로 누수가 지속되면 창방 이상을 부분 해체보수 해야 하기 때문에 가급적 원형유지를 위해서 모니터링 해야 한다. 시기적으로, 상태적으로 기준이 모호한 '원형보존'이나 '원형유지'를 문화재보존의 기본으로 하였어도 당시의 모든 현상은 문화재의 '원형'으로 보아야 한다. 그렇기 때문에 문화재돌봄에 있어서 기단부, 기둥, 지붕의 모니터링 범위는 당해 문화재에 어떠한 훼손이 일어나고 있는가를 확인하는 기준점이 된다. 다시 말하면 모니터링을 시작한 그 시점의 자료는 당해 연도의 '원형'이 된다. 지금에라도 현상에 대한 기록을 남기고 그것이 어떻게 변화되고 있는지, 훼손되고 있는지의 사진, 측정값, 도면 등의 여러 자료를 남겨두어야 후대가 필요로 하는 문화재의 '원형'에 대한 정보로 활용할 수 있을 것이다. 또 문화재 원형보존을 위한 모니터링의 분석에 따른 대안을 적극 도입하여야 한다. 그리고 문화재 모니터링의 결과물인 문화재의 현재 상태 및 상황을 여러 관련 기관과 공유하여서, 문화재의 '개입'에 의한 보존보다 예방보존을 구축해 나아가야 한다.
