  • The bast fibers of paper mulberry were dyed by using sappan wood, gardenia, and gallnut extracted under various extraction conditions. The surface absorption rates, color, and sunlight fastness of the dyed fibers were compared to those of the dyed cotton and silk. The K/S values of silk showed the highest values, followed by gallnut, gardenia, and sappan wood. The optimum extraction conditions of the dye materials were 20 g/L (input amount of dye materials per liter), $90^{\circ}C$ (extraction temperature), and 30 minutes (extraction time). The values of saturation were observed to increase with the increase of the amount of dye materials, extraction time, and extration temperature. However, no effect were found on the values of hue and lightness. In all samples, the developed colors dyed by sappan wood and gardenia were the series of YR, and Y, respectively. The colors of dyed cotton and bast fibers of paper mulberry by gallnut were the series of Y and the dyed silk showed the series of YR. The values of saturation of the bast fibers of paper mulberry by sappan wood and gardenia showed the highest values of saturation, followed by cotton, and silk. In the case of gallnut, cotton showed the highest values of saturation, followed by the bast fibers of paper mulberry, and silk. The sunlight fastness were not improved in all dyeing conditions.

  • This study analyzed the anticipated supply-and-demand of forest biomass energy (through wood pellets) until 2050, in South Korea. Comparing the utilization rates of forest resources of five countries (United Kingdom, Germany, Finland, Japan, and S. Korea), it was found that S. Korea does not nearly utilize its forest resources for energy purposes. The total demand for wood pellets in S. Korea (based on a power generation efficiency of 38%) was predicted to be 3,629 and 4,371 thousand tons in 2034 and 2050, respectively. The anticipated total wood pellet power generation ratio to target power consumption is 1.13% (5,745 GWh), 1.17% (6,336 GWh), and 1.25% (7,631 GWh) in 2020, 2030, and 2050, respectively. Low value-added forest residues left unattended in forests are called "Unused Forest Biomass" in S. Korea. From the analysis, the total annual potential amount of raw material, sustainably collectible amount, and available amount of wood pellet in 2050 were estimated to be 6,877, 4,814, and 3,370 thousand tons, respectively. The rate of contribution to Nationally Determined Contributions was up to 0.64%. Through this study, the authors found that forest biomass energy will contribute to a carbon neutral society in the near future at the national level.

  • Wood-Plastic Composites (WPCs) are one of spotlighting materials for the residential construction and the industry for furniture. At this study, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) was measured by ASTM D 2863 and the cone calorimeter test was done by ISO 5660-1 to find the combustion characteristics of WPCs. In addition, the identical test was implemented to compare the combustion characteristics between the red pine and the antiseptic wood. The result of LOI measurement showed that the LOI of WPCs was lower than that of red pine or antiseptic wood. The cone calorimeter test showed that the heat release rate (HRR) of WPCs was the highest and the Peak HRR as well as the average HRR and total heat release of WPCs was higher than those of red pine or antiseptized wood

  • This study was executed to offer the basic data needed to plywood industry in Korea for the future based on microscopic wood features as our previous paper reported by the macroscopic features. Microscopic wood characteristics for 50 species selected by the viewpoint of possible utility in future were examined and described by the species. Also, keys for the identification based on microscopic features were briefly prepared and presented by gymnosperm and angiospenn respectively.

  • This study aim to use the GTAP model to analyze the impact of RCEP Fermentation in the Korean manufacturing industry by quantifying the RCEP tariff commitment table. The research results show RCEP has boosted output in all sub-manufactures except wood and printed matter due to increased export volumes. Wood products, on the other hand, are more reliant on imports due to lower production due to lower domestic sales or overall exports. After RCEP came into effect, the import and export scale of Korea's manufacturing industry expanded effectively. Among them, the positive impact on the intensive low-tech manufacturing industries such as clothing and leather products, wood products and printing products, and food, beverage and tobacco products is greater than the positive impact on the technology-intensive medium and high-tech and high-tech manufacturing industries. And found that the growth rate of Korea's manufacturing trade is basically proportional to the tax reduction rate of RCEP. Finally, in order to promote the development of the manufacturing industry, some suggestions are put forward that need the government's policy support and strengthen the regional cooperation with RCEP member countries.

  • This study was conducted to derive merchantable volume ratio for 5 major species such as Pinus Densiflora (Central Region). The data used for this study was from at least more than 1,300 trees of research data throughout the country. the study applied two estimation equations, which were the estimation equation for wood volume ratio representing total wood volume to total tree stem volume and the estimation equation for merchantability representing ratio of merchantable volume to total wood volume. The merchantable volume ratio was derived by multiplying those two estimation equations. In order to gain wood volume ratio(W) from DBH, $W=\frac{a_1}{1+a_2/D}+\frac{b_1}{1+b_2/D}$ model was used. Fitness index of it was more than 99% by species, and other test statistics also indicated the suitability of this equation enough. Merchantability (M) for wood volume applied $M=e^{a_1\(\frac{d}{D}\)^{a_2}}-(b_0+b_1D+b_2D^2+b_3D^3)$ model and fitness index was more than 96% by species. Merchantable volume ratio was assessed using those two estimation equations by each 5 species, and constructed a merchantable volume ratio table. In result, merchuntable volume ratio was little difference between stand types, but there was slightly different with the existing standard such as conifers of 85% and non-conifers of 70%.

  • The study examines the feasibility of hosting the International Wood Industry EXPO as a part of the effort to establish Wood Industry Cluster in Jeollanam-do. The provisional EXPO period suggested by the study is 30 days between July 23 (Saturday) and August 21 (Sunday) 2016 and the proposed venues are Namdo International Education Center, Woodland, and Woodcraft Center, Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, and so on. According to the study, it is calculated that the expected investment cost amounts to around 4.5 billion won and the number of total potential visitors reaches 1,627,478. The study also predicts that the EXPO generates various economic effects and outputs that can be quantified as following; a production inducement effect equivalent of 344.5 billion won, an income inducement effect of 77 billion won, an employment inducement effect corresponding to 3,899 jobs, a value-added inducement effect equivalent of 143 billion won, and an indirect tax inductive effect of 32 billion won. Then, emphasizing the need for the organizing committee that can play an important role in managing the overall EXPO events, the study, based on the figures, concludes that the International Wood Industry EXPO 2016 is to be promoted at the regional and national level.
