The tunic of Styela clava(SCT) consists of a proteoglycan network. Regenerated cellulose films were prepared by solution casting and coagulation of SCT in N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide(NMMO)/$H_2O$(87/13 wt%). The crystalline structure of powdered SCT was primarily that of cellulose I. The crystalline structure of SCT films exhibited a cellulose II structure, similar to that of viscose rayon. Physical characterization of SCT films and fibers revealed an intrinsic viscosity($\eta$) of 6.35 dL/g, average molecular weight($M_w$) of 423,000 g/M, and fiber density of 1.50 $g/cm^3$ with a moisture regain and water absorption of 10.20% and 365%, respectively. The results were similar to those of cellulose films regenerated from wood pulp. Films prepared with 6 wt% SCT exhibited strong tensile strength, high water absorption, and a greater degree of elongation. Scanning electron micrographs(SEM) of film cross-sections showed a layered, sponge-like structure.

The influence of base paper properties and fiber type on coating penetration was studied in terms of characterization of coating holdout using two types of hand sheets as the base paper which were prepared from thermomechanical pulp (TMP) and hardwood bleached kraft pulp(KP) sized internally with alkyl ketene dimmer (AKD). Laboratory rod draw down coater was used for surface sizing and coating application. Characterization of coating penetration was done by measuring the roughness of the backside of coating layer. The backside of the coating was exposed by dissolving the fibers in a solution of cupriethylenedimine (CEO). Data show that internal sizing of base paper is effective and surface sizing is more effective to prevent coating penetration. Comparing between the two types of base papers, backside roughness of coating layer of TMP sheet is much larger and sizing is more effective to reduce coating penetration than those of KP sheet. From the result of water absorption and sizing degree after surface sizing, it seems that internal sizing slows down molecular diffusion much more than capillary penetration, but surface sizing reduces the capillary penetration. Furthermore, predominant mechanism of water into paper of TMP sheet seems to be capillary penetration, but it is molecular diffusion in the case of KP sheet.
This study is for the development of fashion cultural products that simultaneously evolved with the contemporary use of traditional temple culture in addition, it analyzed the cultural products available in the Korean market. Methodology, this study conducted a literature review and empirical research. We targeted the cultural products carried at twelve web-based shopping malls for Buddhist cultural products and six souvenir shops in Korean Buddhist temples to collect data on those products in order to analyze the items, design motives, materials, and price ranges. The study results showed that interior items represented the largest portion of the targeted goods, followed by accessories/sundries, clothing/fashion items, stationery, and tableware. The most commonly used design motive was lotuses, followed by the images of Buddha or Buddhist Goddesses and Dharma. The most common materials include fibers, jewelry (such as gold and silver), wood, metals, ceramics, paper, and plastic. The most active price range was between KRW10,000 and KRW50,000, followed by less than KRW10,000 and KRW100,000 to less than KRW500,000. This study discovered the potential for traditional temple culture to advance it further in a contemporary manner and indicated the need to develop a wide variety of cultural products and emphasize its global acceptance.
This study deals with the effect of dwarf growth on xylem structure, especially on the dimension of xylem elements described for 12 species of naturally occuring dwarf trees. The length and tangential diameter of tracheary elements and fibers in dwarf trees appear to be shorter and narrower than those in normal trees. Radial width and cell number of the same annual rings are narrower and smaller in dwarf trees than those in normal trees. Height of rays in dwarf trees is lower than that in normal trees. Dwarf conifers appear to have higher ratio, of latewood to earlywood than that in normal trees. In the hardwood species studied, mesomorphy of vessel elements is lower in dwarfs than that in normal trees. It can be concluded that this dwarf growth occurs as a result of extremely slow growth by environmental stress such as water deficiency.ciency.

Many different types of bleaching chemicals and processes have been globally used for deinked pulp. Besides chlorine-free bleaching chemicals, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium dithionite that could be used without restriction for almost all types of fibers, chlorine-containing chemicals such as chlorine dioxide and sodium hypochlorite have also used throughout the world. Even though hydrogen peroxide is commonly used in newsprint, it could not effectively increase brightness. Experimental evaluation on the possibility of using formamidine sulfinic acid (FAS), a reducing agent, for bleaching a wood-containing deinked pulp has been carried out in this study. The effect of bleaching efficiency for FAS on operational conditions and chemical concentrations compaired to hydrogen peroxide in one and two stages was studied. FAS bleaching showed higher brightness at high temperature and low consistency, and vice versa for peroxide one. Bleaching with sodium silicate and DTPA in FAS and peroxide stage showed better results than cases without them. Sodium silicate and chelant seemed minimize the influence of transition metal ions, including manganese and iron ions, which induce both bleaching agents to decompose. As a result, FAS as a reducing agent seems more effective than hydrogen peroxide for increasing brightness and reducing yellowness. FAS and FAS sequence seemed more efficient than the other two stages of bleaching sequences with regard to the best brightness level obtained. When bleaching was conducted with FAS, COD load was just about one-third compared to peroxide, and brightness stability of the bleached pulp appeared better than peroxide after UV light irradiation.

Effect of fiber treatment with cellulase (Liftase A40), and with two refining methods (Valley beating and impact refining) on wood fiber and handsheet properties were investigated at three refining levels (300, 400, and 500ml) for two furnishes (NBKP and LBKP). Part of the treated furnishes were classified by 150 mesh screen into fine-free fiber, and fines. Fiber length analysis, WRV, zero-span strength, and other handsheet mechanical properties were compared. The study showed that Liftase A40 lowered the zero-span and the folding endurance of both furnishes (NBKP much more and LBKP much less). Pretreatment with Liftase A 40 followed by refining significantly lowered the fiber length and refining energy to reach to the target freeness. Impact refining, which is done by hitting the fibers vertically with rod at 20% solid content, kept the fiber length increased WRV, and improved handsheet mechanical properties much more than valley beating. Properties of fines from different sources were compared in detail in the study.

The bacterial celluloses are very different in its physical, chemical and morphological structures compared to wood cellulose. These fibers have many unique properties that are potentially and commercially beneficial. This study was aimed to elucidate the production of bacterial celluloses and to improve their physical properties by chemical pretreatment. Bacterial celluloses produced by static culture had gel-like pellicle structure. The pellicle thickness was increased with the increasing time, and its layer was about 1.8cm after one-month incubation. The pellicles extruded from the cells of Acetobacter had a non-crystalline structure during initial growing stages, gradually getting crystaliyzed with the incubation time elapse, and eventually fumed to the cellulose I crystals. Young's modulus of bacterial cellulose sheet was increased with increasing NaOH concentration, and resulted in the highest at 5% NaOH concentration. Similar results with NaClO3 pretreatment can be observed. Too concentrated alkali solutions induced the destruction of cellulose fibrils and changed the mechanical properties of the sheets. These alkaline pretreatment have removed non-cellulosic components(NCC) from the bacterial cellulose, and enhanced inter-abrillar bonding by direct close contact among cellulosic fibrils.

The seed paper was used in farm field recently for a sound young plant. The most of seed paper are made of synthetic non-woven sheet. Therefore, it is very difficult to bio-degrade in soil and is very hard to have some special function, for example keeping herbicide and/or insecticide activity because of its lack of chemical acceptability. The purpose of this research is manufacture of seedling paper which have a function of herbicide activity from waste paper. The fiber properties from waste paper were remarkably improved by fine removal with washing and/or flotation process. The paper-making ability for seed paper was enhanced with enzyme treatment of secondary fibers. The paper for seedling must have a good bio-degradation ability in soils. The absorption amount of chemical like as dithiopyr was increased remarkably in enzyme treated base paper. The embossing treatment of base paper was very effective for seed attachment and chemicals retention. And also, the developed seed paper showed a good penetration property of young root through embossed paper.
In this study, to conserve the clay seated Vairocana Buddha triad in Seonunsa temple, Gochang (Treasure 1752), the primary materials employed for creating the clay Buddha statues were scientifically analyzed. By analyzing the soil layer constituting the Buddha statues, it is observed that the said layer comprises sand having particle size greater than that of medium sand and soil having particle size smaller than that of fine sand, which were used in a ratio of 7:3, along with the bast fibers of paper mulberry (Broussonetia kazinoki). Hence, the aforementioned soil layer is composed of a mixture of sand and weathered soil, along with bast fibers to prevent scattering. By analyzing the tree species, it is found that the wooden materials constituting the bottom board and the interior of Buddha's sleeves of the Amitabha Buddha statue, Vairocana Buddha statue, and Medicine Buddha statue are hard pines (Pinus spp.). Additionally, three layers are found in the cross section of the gold layer. Furthermore, each of the hair sections of the Buddha statues is composed of earthy materials such as quartz, albite, microcline, mica, and magnetite, and the hair surface was painted by incorporating black materials containing magnetite.

The purpose of this study was to introduce the differential standard of Mok-Hyaeng Radix species. We established the classificatory standard according to the external and internal morphology and the pattern in 4 kinds of Mok-Hyaeng Radix. The results follow: 1. On the external morphology, Radix of Vladimiria souliei had a sticky material in the head of roots and it was yellowish white in the cut surface. It attached to teeth during chewing. Radix of Aucklandia lappa (=Saussurea lappa) was dark grayish brown and was grayish brown in the cut surface. It had special odor and was not attache to teeth chewing it. On the other hand, Radix of Inula helenium was dark brown. In the cut surface, cortical layer was different from wood layer. Radix of Aristolochia contorta was yellowish brown. In the cut surface, it was not smooth and cortical layer was different from wood layer. 2. On the internal morphology, Radix of Vladimiria souliei had many fascicular fibers and scattered large oil chambers in the bast ray, xylem ray, and parenchyma. On Radix of Aucklandia lappa (=Saussurea lappa), it was difficult to find out the trace when the cork layer was exfoliated. The cambium formed circle and the large oil chambers were scattered in the phloem and xylem. On the other hand, external cortical layer of Radix of Inula helenium was detached and cambium was formed to indistinct circle and large oil chambers were scattered in the phloem and xylem. On Radix of Arustolochia contorta, the large oil chambers were scattered in the surface later, bast part was relatively broad and cambium formed circle. 3. On the TLC pattern, Radix of Aristolochia contorta, Inula helenium, Aucklandia lappa, and Vladimiria souliei were chromogenic to violet and purple according to sulfuric acid colour pattern, especially faint on Aristolochia contorta. 4. On the pattern analysis of HPLC, we compared the content and the pattern of constunolide and dehydrocostus lactone, Radix of Aucklandia lappa was similar to Radix of Vladimiria souliei and Radix of Aristolochia contorta was similar to Radix of Inula helenium. On the total HPLC component pattern, constunolide and dehydrocostus lactone were similar in all four types, but it showed the Rf 5-6 peak was only in Radix of Aristolochia contorta, not in Radix of Inula helenium, Aucklandia lappa, and Vladimiria souliei. It is considered the results of this study will be furnished the basis to succeeding studies and it is needed to extensive comparative study for the same genus-degree of relatedness.
