This paper describes the relationship between the bending strength properties of sloped finger-jointed woods and the acoustic emissions (AEs) generated during the test. Pinus densiflora pieces were cut in sloped-finger types and glued with four kinds of adhesives (polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl-aeryl, oilic urethane and resorcinol-phenol resin). The results were as follows: The lower the bending strength(load) was, the earlier the generation time of AE event count got and the higher the increasing rate of AE event count became in the sloped finger-jointed specimens bonded with polyvinyl acetate and oilic urethane resin adhesives. Therefore, the slope from load-AE cumulative event count curve was very steep. The AE event count for resorcinol-phenol resin adhesive obtained even from low load level was abundant. The AE event count continuously increased as load increased and the event count was much more than one in the other conditions. The slope from load-AE cumulative event count curve was very gentle compared with other conditions. The patterns of AE event count and count were very similar. The relationship between the MOR and the AE parameter from load and AE cumulative event count in the early stage of the sloped finger-jointed specimens bonded with polyvinyl acetate, oilic urethane and resorcinol-phenol resin adhesives was much greater than that between the MOE and the MOR. Therefore, the AE signals obtained during bending test are useful for estimating the strength of sloped finger-jointed specimens.
Instead of metal connector generally used on the structural glued laminated timber rahmen joints, the GFRP reinforced laminated plates combining veneer and GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic) and bonded type GFRP rod were used as the connectors. As a result of moment resistance performance evaluation on the joint part applied with these connectors, the yield moment of specimen using the GFRP reinforced laminated plates and GFRP rod pin was measured 4 % lower in comparison to the specimen (Type-1) using the metal connectors, but the initial rotational stiffness was measured 29% higher. Also, the yield moment and rotational stiffness of the specimen using the GFRP-reinforced laminated plates and wood (Eucalyptus marginata) pin showed were measured 11% and 56% higher in comparison to the Type-1 specimen, showing the best performance. It was also confirmed through the failure shape and perfect elasto-plasticity analysis that it showed ductility behavior, not brittle fracture, from the shear resisting force by the pin and the bonding strength increased and the unification of member was carried out. On the other hand, in case of the specimen bonded with GFRP rod, it was impossible to measure the bonding performance or it was measured very low due to poor bonding.
In this study, we synthesized rosin-based epoxy resin and manufactured two components adhesives and epoxy putty using this epoxy resin. This study manufactured main element of adhesives for enabling it to form epoxide group by letting epichlorohydrin react to maleic anhydride modified rosin, and used room temperature curing type triethylenetetramine for hardener. The ratio between main element and hardener of of manufactured adhesives was 100 : 20, and main element and hardener of filling material were manufactured as clay type by mixing them with filler. Manufactured undiluted adhesives and filling material showed very stable result in the adhesive strength (3.06 MPa) and ultraviolet irradiation, showing outstanding result comparing to existing restoration adhesives. And it is considered a material having reversibility as it was dissolved in organic solvents such as acetone and toluene after being hardened, which showed a result that solved part of possible problems caused by restoration. As a result of use and application of manufactured adhesives and filling material for actual wood crafts, they showed excellent results in workability, stability, removability etc., and this study confirmed that the material can be used for and applied to various fields.

In this study, we will develop a hybrid cross-sectional shape of steel inserted type glued-laminated timber that can improve the strength of structural glued-laminated timber and maximize the ductility by using steel plate with excellent tensile and deformation ability. A total of three specimens were fabricated and the flexural performance test was carried out to evaluate the structural performance of the steel inserted type glued-laminated timber. In order to compare the effect of steel inserted glued-laminated timber, one structural glued-laminated timber test specimen composed of pure wood was manufactured. In addition, in order to evaluate the adhesion performance of the steel inserted, one each of a screw joint test specimen and a polyurethane joint test specimen was prepared. As a result, all the specimens showed the initial crack in the finger joint near the force point. This has been shown to be a cause of crack diffusion and strength degradation. The use of finger joints in the maximum moment section is considered to affect the strength and ductility of the glued-laminated timber beam. Polyurethane-adhesive steel inserted glued-laminated timber showed fully-composite behavior with little horizontal separation between the steel plate and glued-laminated timber until the maximum load was reached. This method has been shown to exhibit sufficient retention bending performance.
This study was carried out to investigate replaceable species with the conventional sounding board sitka spruce. by comparing the dynamic properties such as density, dynamic Young's modulus and internal friction Dynamic Young's modulus. internal friction of longitudinal and radial direction measured in free mass-free boundary condition for facile vibration analysis and measured by forced vibration method. Dynamical properties of four species were measured on squared plate specimen that the four edges were hung vertically by threads and driven magnetically through an iron piece glued on the specimen, by the use of condenser microphone as vibration transducer, and analyzed by FFT analyzer. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Chaldni method using aluminum powder was proper to identify the vibration mode in the plate vibration and it was possible to verify the resornance mode. 2. It was considered that it was necessary to investigate the influence of adhesive part on the plate vibration when the sounding board was made by two or three small board adhesion. 3. It was considered that plate vibration method, which was a superior to the vibration test of beam, was suitable for selecting suounding board because dynamic Young's modulus and internal friction show different order according to longitudinal and radial direction. 4. Paulownia tomentosa Thunb.) Steudel has been considered to be replaceable species with sitka spruce because it has high dynamic Young's modulus compared with low density, low internal friction, and K value of Paulownia tomentosa (Thunb.) Steudel is greater than that of sitka spruce.
This study was to investigate the effect of adding additive as tannin, rice husk and charcoal, for reducing the formaldehyde emission level, on the adhesion properties of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin for particleboard. We controlled the hot-pressing time, temperature and pressure to determine the bonding strength and formaldehyde emission. Blends of various UF resin/additives (tannin, rice husk and charcoal) compositions were prepared. To determine and compare the effect of additives (tannin, rice husk and charcoal) content, 0, 5, 10 and 15%, by weight of UF resin, were used. $NH_4Cl$ as hardener added. To determine the level of formaldehyde emission, we used the desiccator, perforator and 20 L-small chamber method. The formaldehyde emission level decreased with increased additions of additive (except rice husk). Also, increased hot-pressing time decreased formaldehyde emission level. At a charcoal replacement ratio of only 15%, the formaldehyde emission level is under F ✩ ✩ ✩ ✩ grade (emit < $0.3mg/{\ell}$). Curing of the high tannin additive content in this adhesive system indicated that the bonding strength increased. But, in the case of rice husk and charcoal, the bonding strength was much lower due to the inorganic substance. Furthermore, rice husk was poor in bonding strength as well as formaldehyde emission than tannin and charcoal.
The primary objective of this research was to investigate optimum manufacturing condition of thin composite panels composed of sawdust, polyethylene film and polypropylene net. At the study the experiment was designed to make thin board in which sawdust offers effectiveness as core composing material, polyethylene as adhesive with added urea resin, and polypropylene as stiffness and flexibility in the composition panel. 100 types of thin composite panels were manufactured according to press-lam and mat-forming process of various hot pressing conditions(pressure, temperature and time). They were tested and compared with control boards on bending properties(MOR, MOE, SPL, WML), internal bond strength, thickness swelling, linear expansion and water absorption. At the same time the visual inspections of each types of panels were accomplished. The physical and mechanical properties of composite types passed by visual inspection were analyzed by Tukey's studentized range test. From the statistical analysis, the optimum manufacturing condition of thin composite panels were selected. Compared with two manufacturing processes, mat-forming process performed better than press-lam process in all tested properties. The optimum manufacturing conditions resulted from the experiment and statistical analysis were able to determine as following: the press temperature was shown the most good result at 130$^{\circ}C$ in mat forming process and 140$^{\circ}C$ press lam process, the press time 4 min in both processes, but the press pressure was 25-10kg/$cm^2$ in mat forming and 15k/$cm^2$ press lam process.
The aim of this research was to investigate physical and mechanical properties of various composition panels, each fabricated with a ratio of fiber to particle of 2 to 10. Type A consisted of fiber-faces and particle-core in layered-mat system. Type B consisted of fiberboard-faces on particleboard-core. Type C consisted of fibers and particles in mixed-mat system. The results obtained from tests of bending strength, internal bond, screw holding strength and stability were as follows: 1. The bending strength and internal bonding of both the Type A panel and the Type B panel were higher than those of the Type C panel and three-layered particle board. 2. The mechanical properties of the Type C panel showed the lowest values of all composition methods. It seems that the different compression ratios of the particle and fiber interrupted the densification of the fibers when hot pressed. 3. The dimensional stability of layered-mat system panels consising of fiber-faces and particle-core was better the than control particleboard. 4. In composition methods of particle and fiber, layered-composition method was more resonable than mixed-composition. The Type B panel had the highest mechanical properties of all the composition types. 5. The Type A panel was considered the ideal composition method because of its resistance to delamination between the particle-layer and the fiber-layer and because of its lower adhesive content and more effective manufa cturing process.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the applicability of high temperature drying to pitch pine (Pinus rigida) lumber, especially intended for use as lamina of structural glued laminated timber (glulam), to enhance the efficient utilization and provide added-value to that species. The high temperature schedule and drying procedures utilized were shown to be reasonable for drying glulam lamina due to the occurrence of small moisture gradients, minimal residual drying stress, and low warpage. Through preliminary tests, it was confirmed that residual resin at lamina surfaces did not adversely affect the gluing process. However, quantitative analysis of resin is required for developing a method to constrain the occurrence of pitch trouble with respect to decreasing long-term adhesive and finish durability of glulam in use after manufacturing. The final moisture content of high temperature dried lamina was much lower than target moisture content and discoloration was more severe than anticipated. In a further study, it will be necessary to determine the optimal drying conditions, such as temperature, humidity, drying time, and top load restraint level, which could best control discoloration, warpage, and moisture content of the lamina, while minimizing fuel expense.
The research attempted to develop a wood adhesive based on waste cooking oil, using ozonification technology for the chemical structure modification. The waste cooking oil (WCO) was reacted with $O_3$ for different times; 1 h, 2 h, and 3 h. The chemical structure modifications of the ozonized WCOs were examined by Fourier transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrum. The FT-IR spectrum of WCO had an absorbance peak at 3,010 $cm^{-1}$ that was the characteristic peak of the unsaturated double bonds. As ozone treatment time increased, the peak of the double bond was disappeared and carboxyl peak appeared at 1,700 $cm^{-1}$. Especially, the double bond of 3 hrs-ozonized WCO was vanished almost. In results of the dry bonding strengths of the 3 hrs-ozonized WCO mixed with polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI) were the strengths of weight ratio of 3hrs-ozonized WCO : pMDI, 1 : 0.5, 8.08 kgf/$cm^2$, 1 : 0.75, 9.53 kgf/$cm^2$ 1 : 1, 44.16 kgf/$cm^2$, 1 : 2, 58.08 kgf/$cm^2$, 1 : 3, 61.41 kgf/$cm^2$, and 1 : 4, 46.95 kgf/$cm^2$. Therefore, it was found that the optimum equivalent ratio was formed at the ratio of 1 : 2 or 1 : 3. Under wetting the bonding strength of 1 : 3 ratio was appeared higher than that of 1 : 2 ratio, while the results obtained from hot-water and cyclic boiling shear test were similar.
