In this study, design charts for estimating consolidation settlement are proposed according to finite strain consolidation theory using a nonlinear constitutive relationship equation. Results of parametric sensitivity analysis shows that the final settlement, initial height, and initial void ratio exerted the greatest effect, and the coefficients of the void ratio-effective-stress. Proposed design charts were analyzed for three regions using a representative constitutive relationship equation that enables major dredged-reclaimed construction sites in Korea. The regional design charts can be calculated accurately for the final settlement because it is applied directly to the numerical analysis results, except for reading errors. A general design chart applicable to all marine clays is proposed through correlation analysis of the main parameters. A final self-weight consolidation settlement with various initial void ratios and initial height conditions should be estimated easily using the general design chart and constitutive relationship. The estimated final settlement using the general design chart is similar to the results of numerical analysis obtained using finite strain consolidation theory. Under an overburden pressure condition, design charts for estimating consolidation settlement are proposed for three regions in Korea.
It is a global trend to consider contaminated low-permeability zones as one of the primary management targets for the remediation of DNAPL contaminated sites. In addition, studies on the persistence caused by back diffusion of DNAPLs from low-permeability zones have been actively conducted worldwide. On the other hand, the studies for domestic groundwater contamination with the low-permeability zones are insufficient. Therefore, this study introduces the forward and back diffusions of DNAPL through low-permeability zones and suggests the importance of them by reviewing representative previous studies, especially on back diffusion and plume persistence. We proposed six diffusion scenarios and analytical solutions based on various boundary conditions of low-permeability zones. FI (forward diffusion into infinite domain) and BI (back diffusion form infinite domain) scenarios illustrate forward and back diffusion in which the depths of a low-permeability layer are assumed to be infinite. FFN (forward diffusion into finite domain with no flux boundary) and BFN (back diffusion from finite domain with no flux boundary) scenarios describe forward and back diffusion for a finite domain of a low-permeability layer with no flux boundary at the bottom. When the bottom of a low-permeability layer is considered as flux boundary, forward and back diffusion scenarios correspond to FFF (forward diffusion into finite domain with flux boundary) and BFF (back diffusion from finite domain with flux boundary). The scenarios and analytical solutions in this study may contribute to the determination of an efficient remediation method based on site characteristics such as a thickness of low-permeability zones or duration of contamination exposure.
Ground motions recorded in near-fault sites, where the rupture propagates toward the site, are significantly different from those observed in far-fault regions. In this research, finite element modeling is used to investigate the effect of pile cap stiffness on the seismic response of soil-pile-structure systems under near-fault ground motions. The Von Wolffersdorff hypoplastic model with the intergranular strain concept is applied for modeling of granular soil (sand) and the behavior of structure is considered to be non-linear. Eight fault-normal near-field ground motion records, recorded on rock, are applied to the model. The numerical method developed is verified by comparing the results with an experimental test (shaking table test) for a soil-pile-structure system. The results, obtained from finite element modeling under near-fault ground motions, show that when the value of cap stiffness increases, the drift ratio of the structure decreases, whereas the pile relative displacement increases. Also, the residual deformations in the piles are due to the non-linear behavior of soil around the piles.

A motorcycle helmet is the best means to protect the head of bike's driver and it is directly connected to a driver's life. Prior to producing of the helmet, it has to be passed the process of impact test to evaluate of its safety. This test evaluates peak acceleration and H.I.C (Head Injury Criteria). This paper analyzes impact test with finite element method to find the behavior of helmet during the test. Also, the effect of impact sites on the helmet was evaluated to improve the thickness distribution of the helmet.
Field measurements of directional waves were carried out during the summer of 2002 at two coastal sites in water of finite depth. A couple of general purpose instruments were used employing acoustic Doppler technology. The aim of the study was to investigate the spatial behavior of the directional movement of waves as they come ashore. In total,74 tests were carried out during which sea states of low to moderate intensity were recorded. A great number of these runs displayed bimodal characteristics of the spreading function at high frequencies. It was found that in general, the frequency-integrated directional width tends to broaden as the water shoals and when refraction effects are negligible. This is attributed to wave-wave interactions that become pronounced in shallow water. The same directional width showed, also, a tendency to increase with increasing peak frequency of the sea state spectrum. The behavior of the kurtosis of the spreading function was also examined. It was found that for higher frequencies this index tends to increase in wave spectra above a certain sea severity threshold.

This study aims to develop a computational framework based on the finite element method for modeling the hydrogen embrittlement in martensitic steel. The hydrogen embrittlement is a well-known phenomenon, in which the hydrogen penetrates into the surface, flows through the microstructure and finally leads to pre-mature fracture under external or internal stresses. The current numerical model takes into account the effect of hydrogen on the plasticity and failure behavior of martensitic steel under various stress states. This allows for the construction of a failure criterion that accounts for conventional stress states and hydrogen concentration. The developed model is capable of simulating hydrogen diffusion through the lattice based on the distribution of hydrostatic stress. Additionally, it can calculate the hydrogen concentration in trapped sites, such as dislocations, using a local equilibrium assumption, often referred to as Oriani's equilibrium. The developed model parameters are identified through the tensile tests with and without hydrogen environment, and the performance of model can be validated by analyzing fractured automotive part in the hydrogen environment.

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to analyze stress distribution of all ceramic posterior fixed partial denture using a three dimensional finite element method. Material and method. A three dimensional finite element model was created to demonstrate all-ceramic posterior fixed partial denture and then this computer model measured the stress distribution of the all ceramic bridges which has a ceramic core materials such as Zirconia, IPS Empress. 2. In-Ceram zirconia, Metal-Ceramic. Also the stress distribution was examined according to loading sites when force was applied to sites such as the central area of second premolar the mesial connector of pontic, the central fossa of pontic, the distal connector of pontic, and the central fossa of second molar. Results. 1. In all the materials of the core in this study, von Mises stress indicated that the stress increased as force was applied to loaded sites, just at those points, on the connector, and the margin in the area adjacent to the connectors. 2. The maximum principal stress was much higher in the lower part of the connectors than in any other region. 3. As the load was applied to the different locations, the research showed a consistent increase of stress in the lower connectors. The maximum value of the von Mises stress was two or three times greater when the load was applied directly to the connectors rather than indirectly through another stressed region. 4. In the case of In-Ceram zirconia, the stress in lower connectors was the highest of all the reference points, the stress showed 75% of all the maximum stress. Ziconia showed 72%, Metal Ceramic 67% and IPS Empress 2 50%. 5. In the case of Ziconia, the stress was well dispersed in each reference point that the stress differences were smaller when compared to In-Cream ziconia.
In recent years, technological developments have rapidly increased the number of complex structures and equipment in the industrial. Accordingly, the prognostics and health monitoring (PHM) technology has become significant. The safety assessment of industrial sites requires data obtained by installing a number of sensors in the structure. Therefore, digital twin technology, which forms the core of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, is attracting attention in the safety field. The research on digital twin technology of structures subjected to seismic loads has been conducted recently. Hence, this study proposes a digital twin system that estimates the responses and arbitrary load in real time by utilizing the minimum sensor to a pipe that receives a seismic and arbitrary load. To construct the digital twin system, a finite-element model was created considering the dynamic characteristics of the pipe system, and then updating the finite-element model. In addition, the calculation speed was improved using a finite-element model that applied the reduced-order modeling (ROM) technology to achieve real-time performance. The constructed digital twin system successfully and rapidly estimated the load and the point where the sensor was not attached. The accuracy of the constructed digital twin system was verified by comparing the response of the digital twin model with that derived by using the load estimated from the digital twin model as input in the finite-element model.
The purpose of this study was to examine, by the method of 3-dimentional finite element analysis. how infraocclusion affected the stress distribution in surrounding bone and osseointegrated prosthesis. The 3-dimentional finite element mandibular models were made, in which the first and second molars were removed and the two osseointegrated implants were placed in the first and second molar sites and implant supported fixed prostheses were constructed. Analysis of equivalent stress and displacement induced by strong occlusion or infraocclusion was performed under vertical or inclined distributed loads. The results were as follows; 1. Under vertical load of 50N or 500N, the model in which infraocclusion had not been allowed showed greater stress on implants and the supporting bone than on natural teeth. 2. In the model in which infraocclusion of $30{\mu}m$ had been allowed, implant-prosthesis on the molars had no contact with opposing teeth under vertical load of 50N, However with the same allowed infraocclusion and the model under vertical load of 500N, implant prosthesis on the second molar had contact with opposing teeth, and stress distribution occured properly on natural teeth and implants. 3. Under $45^{\circ}$ inclined load, the model in which infraocclusion had not been allowed showed greater stress on implants and the supporting bone than on natural teeth. There was greater stress in the case of $45^{\circ}$ inclined load than in the case of vertical load. 4. Under $45^{\circ}$ inclined load of 50N or 500N, the model in which infraocclusion of $30{\mu}m$, had been allowed showed no occlusal contact on the implants and occlusal contact on the natural teeth. 5. In partially edentulous cases with implant supported prosthesis, we can prevent excessive load on implants by allowing infraocclusion.

Both ends of the hoop reinforcement in the reinforced concrete (RC) columns subjected to lateral loading must necessarily be bent by 135° so as to ensure a sufficient level of ductility. However, as this reinforcement is extremely difficult to construct, this requirement is often not satisfied at construction sites. This study entailed an experimental investigation on RC columns subjected to cyclic lateral loading equipped with steel clip-type implements that were developed to replace the complicated 135° hoop reinforcement details. Four RC column specimens were manufactured, and the main test parameters included the use of high-strength concrete and steel clip-type implements. Furthermore, three-dimensional finite element models were employed to evaluate the structural performances of the test specimens via nonlinear analyses. The results of the test and finite element analyses indicate that the RC columns with the steel clip-type implements exhibit structural performances equal to or better than those with the 135° hoop reinforcement details. Further, the finite element analysis results agree well with the test results.
