  • In this paper, we consider a sectorized wireless powered sensor network (WPSN), wherein sensor nodes are clustered based on sectors and transmit data to the cluster head (CH) using energy harvested from a hybrid access point. We construct a system model for this sectorized WPSN and find optimal coordinates of CH that maximize the achievable transmission rate of sensing data. To obtain the optimal CH with low overhead, we perform an asymptotic geometric analysis (GA). Simulation results show that the proposed GA-based CH selection method is close to the optimal performance exhibited by exhaustive search with a low feedback overhead.

  • In this paper, a solar energy powered bicycle linked to a wireless sensor network (WSN) which monitors the transfer of solar energy to an electrical energy storage unit and an analysis of its effectiveness is proposed. In order to achieve this goal, a solar-powered bicycle with an attached ZigBee and a far-end wireless network supervisory system is setup. Experimental results prove that our prototype, solar energy powered bicycle, can achieve enough solar energy for charging a two lead-acid battery pack. As a result, the user, through use of a wireless network in the parking period can be kept aware of the data on the amount of immediate solar radiation, the degree of illumination, the ambient temperature, and electrical energy storage capacity information of the bicycle through an internet interface.

  • Solar-powered wireless sensor nodes can use extra energy to obtain additional data to increase the precision. However, if the amount of data sensed is increased indiscriminately, the overhead of relay nodes may increase, and their energy may be exhausted. In this paper, we introduce a sensing and compression rate selection scheme to increase the amount of data obtained while preventing energy exhaustion. In this scheme, the neighbor nodes of the sink node determine the limit of data to be transmitted according to the allocated energy and their descendant nodes, and the other nodes select a compression algorithm appropriate to the allocated energy and the limitation of data to be transmitted. A simulation result verifies that the proposed scheme gathers more data with a lower number of blackout nodes than other schemes. We also found that it adapts better to changes in node density and the amount of energy harvested.

  • In wireless sensor networks, sensor nodes have a short transmission range and data is transferred from source to destination node using the multi-hop transmission. Sensor nodes are powered by battery and the link qualities are different, and the routing protocol in the wireless sensor network is one of the important technical issues. Multipath routing was proposed to reduce the data congestion and increase data throughput. In the multipath routing, however, each path can be interfered by the other path, and it can aggravate network performance. In this paper, we propose the multipath routing scheme for multi-rate wireless sensor networks. The multipath routing selects transmission paths to minimize transmission delay and path interference.

  • In wireless sensor networks where there is no centralized base station, each node has limited transmission range and the multi-hop routing for transmitting data to the destination is the one of the important technical issues. In particular, the wireless sensor network is not powered by external power source but operates by its own battery, so it is required to maximize the network life through efficient use of energy. To balance the power consumption, the residual power based adaptive power control is required in routing protocol. In this paper, we propose a routing protocol that prolongs the network lifetime by balancing the power consumption among the nodes by controlling the transmit power according to the residual power. We evaluate the proposed routing protocol using extensive simulation, and the results show that the proposed routing scheme can balance the power consumption and prolong network lifetime.

  • Recently, on-line diagnosis methods through wired and wireless networks are widely adopted in the diagnosis of industrial Electric Facilities, such as generators, transformers and motors. Also smart sensors which includes sensors, signal conditioning circuits and micro-controller in one board are widely studied in the field of condition monitoring. This paper suggests an self-powered system suitable for condition-monitoring smart sensors, which uses parasitic vibrations of the facilities as energy source. First, vibration-driven noise patterns of the electric facilities are presented. And then, an electromagnetic generator which uses mechanical mass-spring vibration resonance are suggested and designed. Finally energy consumption of the presented smart sensor, which consists of MEMS vibration sensors, signal conditioning circuits, a low-power consumption micro-controller, and a ZIGBEE wireless tranceiver, are presented. The usefulness and limits of the presented electromagnetic generators in the field of electric facility monitoring are also suggested.

  • In this paper, we proposes a multi-ring based mobile sink location scheme for solar-powered wireless sensor network (WSN). The proposed scheme maintains the multi-rings in which nodes keep the current location of sink node. With the help of nodes in multi-rings, each node can locate the sink node efficiently with low-overhead. Moreover, because our scheme utilizes only surplus energy of a node, it can maintain multiple rings without degrading any performance of each node. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme shows much better latency and scalability with lower energy-consumption than the existing single-ring based scheme.

  • Wireless sensor networks consist of sensor nodes which are expected to be battery-powered and are hard to replace or recharge. Thus, reducing the energy consumption of sensor nodes is an important design consideration in wireless sensor networks. For the implementation of an energy-efficient MAC protocol, a Sensor-MAC based on the IEEE 802.11 protocol, which has energy efficient scheduling, has been proposed. In this paper, we propose a Dynamic S-MAC that adapts dynamically to the network-traffic state. The dynamic S-MAC protocol improves the energy consumption of the S-MAC by changing the frame length according to the network-traffic state. Using an NS-2 Simulator, we compare the performance of the Dynamic S-MAC with that of the S-MAC protocol.

  • Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are composed of a large number of sensor nodes. Battery-powered sensor nodes have limited coverage; therefore, it is more efficient to transmit data via multi-hop communication. The network lifetime is a crucial issue in WSNs and the multi-hop routing protocol should be designed to prolong the network lifetime. Prolonging the network lifetime can be achieved by minimizing the power consumed by the nodes, as well as by balancing the power consumption among the nodes. A power imbalance can reduce the network lifetime even if several nodes have sufficient (battery) power. In this paper, we propose a routing protocol that prolongs the network lifetime by balancing the power consumption among the nodes. To improve the balance of power consumption and improve the network lifetime, the proposed routing scheme adaptively controls the transmission range using a power control according to the residual power in the nodes. We developed a routing simulator to evaluate the performance of the proposed routing protocol. The simulation results show that the proposed routing scheme increases power balancing and improves the network lifetime.
