On the Safety and Performance Demonstration Tests of Prototype Gen-IV Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor and Validation and Verification of Computational Codes

  • The design of Prototype Gen-IV Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor (PGSFR) has been developed and the validation and verification (V&V) activities to demonstrate the system performance and safety are in progress. In this paper, the current status of test activities is described briefly and significant results are discussed. The large-scale sodium thermal-hydraulic test program, Sodium Test Loop for Safety Simulation and Assessment-1 (STELLA-1), produced satisfactory results, which were used for the computer codes V&V, and the performance test results of the model pump in sodiumshowed good agreement with those in water. The second phase of the STELLA program with the integral effect tests facility, STELLA-2, is in the detailed design stage of the design process. The sodium thermal-hydraulic experiment loop for finned-tube sodium-to-air heat exchanger performance test, the intermediate heat exchanger test facility, and the test facility for the reactor flow distribution are underway. Flow characteristics test in subchannels of a wire-wrapped rod bundle has been carried out for safety analysis in the core and the dynamic characteristic test of upper internal structure has been performed for the seismic analysis model for the PGSFR. The performance tests for control rod assemblies (CRAs) have been conducted for control rod drive mechanism driving parts and drop tests of the CRA under scram condition were performed. Finally, three types of inspection sensors under development for the safe operation of the PGSFR were explained with significant results.

Strategic Plan for Improvement of Citizen Service using Ubiquitous Technology on Public Area: Geospatial Web based Service (유비쿼터스 기술을 이용한 다중집합장소의 시민서비스 고도화 방안 : 지리공간 웹 기반 서비스 제공을 중심으로)

  • Enterprises as well as central and local governments have tried to apply ubiquitous technology to the actual life on the various types of business and projects. In this paper we develop strategic plan to provide public service on public areas based on needs analysis of public services as well as trend analysis of ubiquitous and web technology. Ubiquitous service model should be based on geospatial web which can incorporate participation and collaboration concepts, as the wire/wireless network system develop rapidly. To achieve this purpose, we suggest the following projects; 1), construction of internet map based on geospatial web technology, 2), development of web contents based on geospatial web, 3), installing ubiquitous equipment, and 4), upgrade Seoul Metropolitan Government's homepage and internet system which can incorporate web 2.0 concepts. Ubiquitous service model should be based on not only development of ubiquitous technology but also needs of consumer such as citizen, enterprises, and public sectors which have an interest in that place. Geospatial web will be the core of development of ubiquitous service models.

A study on the identification of underwater propeller singing phenomenon (수중 프로펠러 명음 현상의 규명에 관한 연구)

  • This paper is a study on the generation mechanism of propeller singing based on the cavitation tunnel test, underwater impact test, finite element analysis and computational flow analysis for the model propeller. A wire screen mesh, a propeller and a rudder were installed to simulate ship stern flow, and occurrence and disappearance of propeller singing phenomenon were measured by hydrophone and accelerometer. The natural frequencies of propeller blades were predicted through finite element analysis and verified by contact and non-contact impact tests. The flow velocity and effective angle of attack for each section of the propeller blades were calculated using RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equation-based computational fluid analysis. Using the high resolution analysis based on detached eddy simulation, the vortex shedding frequency calculation was performed. The numerical predicted vortex shedding frequency was confirmed to be consistent with the singing frequency and blade natural frequency measured by the model test.

  • The steady and unsteady state models were established for the performance analysis and design of heavy water distillation columns packed with corrugated wire mesh. After the steady state model was derived with pressure drops, separated D$_2$O concentration and temperature profiles and pressure gradients in the column were obtained by solving MESH equations with equation tearing method. For the analysis of unsteady state behavior, the equilibrium stage transient model deduced from modifying the Cohen's ideal cascade equation was used to predict the concentration change of heavy water with time. These models were in good agreement with the experimental results of heavy water distillation at total reflux. And the newly developed packing material turned out to be very efficient separation device for very small HETP, pressure drop and holdup.

  • The Urea-SCR system commercialized shows a remarkable performance to reduce NOx emission in heavy duty diesel engines. However, Urea-water solution injected upstream a mixer, which is set up inside a exhaust pipe to promote exhaust gas-atomized droplet mixing, bumps up against the wall of a exhaust pipe as the droplets flow downstream through the exhaust gas. The urea deposited on the wall of the exhaust pipe is changed into the Urea-salt, resulting in the decreased life-time of the SCR catalysts. Therefore, the development of the urea deposition avoidance technologies is being treated as an important issue of the Urea-SCR systems. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effects of the wall flow characteristics around the mixer-housing assembly with the variation of the mixer housing surrounding and supporting the mixer, which is designed to increase the wall flow and then to reduce droplet deposition. The flow characteristics was investigated by using a hot-wire anemometry for 2-D simplified duct model, and the housing tilt angles and the position of the mixer were changed : angle of $0^{\circ}$, $1^{\circ}$, $2^{\circ}$, $3^{\circ}$, and mixer positions of 0L, 0.5L, 1L. The results showed that the wall flow onto the exhaust pipe was improved with changing the tilt angle of the mixer housing, and the wall flow improved more when the position of the mixer was on 1L.

  • Rock fall protection system installed against rock slope is one of the most conventional way to protect nearby infra structures. Despite of wide application of typical rectangular nets, virtually installed to protect rock slope face, several problems have also been pointed out up to date. Rectangular draped nets are vulnerable to a sudden external shock such as rock fall, because it doesn't have any systematical buffers or shock absorbers. Furthermore, it has been widely recognized from the some cases of rock fall accident in Korea that rock fall protection nets cause wide range of failure in the rock slope faces due to insufficient pullout bearing capacity of fixing parts. Therefore, in this study, we tried to make a consideration about the problems of existing standard rock fall protection nets in Korea, and develop a new type of hexagonal net with a shock absorber based on design rock fall energy. In this paper, laboratory and full scale test procedure is described to analysis the performance of newly developed hexagonal rock fall net, and the key results are presented and discussed.

Labial and buccal surface contours of Korean normal occlusion in a three-dimensional digital model (한국인 정상교합자의 3차원 디지털 모형을 이용한 순,협측 치면 곡률)

  • Objective: This study was performed to investigate the labio/buccal clinical crown curvatures of Korean permanent teeth and to obtain the curve-ratio data in an attempt to fabricate bracket bases fit for each individual Korean permanent tooth. Methods: Three-dimensional digital models were made from 30 sets of dental casts with normal anatomic structures. According to the FA points, horizontal and vertical reference planes were established and lines were drawn on the tooth surfaces in reference to these planes. The curvature was expressed as the coefficient of a quadratic equation. Lines mesial, distal, gingival and occlusal to the horizontal, vertical reference planes and the FA point were drawn. Results: The curvature measured for each line revealed that there are no significant differences between male and female, except for maxillary canines and maxillary second bicuspids (p > 0.05). There were notable differences in the mesio-distal or gingivo-occlusal curvatures among the mandibular lateral incisors, maxillary canines, maxillary and mandibular first and second bicuspids and first molars (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The labial & buccal crown curvatures of teeth in Korean normal occlusion were measured on the mesial and distal, gingival and occlusal sides respectively in this study. Based on these data, a SWA can be developed to fit the individual features of Korean tooth crowns.

Vulnerability Analysis and Detection Mechanism against Denial of Sleep Attacks in Sensor Network based on IEEE 802.15.4 (IEEE 802.15.4기반 센서 네트워크에서 슬립거부 공격의 취약성 분석 및 탐지 메커니즘)

  • IEEE 802.15.4[1] has been standardized for the physical layer and MAC layer of LR-PANs(Low Rate-Wireless Personal Area Networks) as a technology for operations with low power on sensor networks. The standardization is applied to the variety of applications in the shortrange wireless communication with limited output and performance, for example wireless sensor or virtual wire, but it includes vulnerabilities for various attacks because of the lack of security researches. In this paper, we analyze the vulnerabilities against the denial of sleep attacks on the MAC layer of IEEE 802.15.4, and propose a detection mechanism against it. In results, we analyzed the possibilities of denial of sleep attacks by the modification of superframe, the modification of CW(Contention Window), the process of channel scan or PAN association, and so on. Moreover, we comprehended that some of these attacks can mount even though the standardized security services such as encryption or authentication are performed. In addition to, we model for denial of sleep attacks by Beacon/Association Request messages, and propose a detection mechanism against them. This detection mechanism utilizes the management table consisting of the interval and node ID of request messages, and signal strength. In simulation results, we can show the effect of attacks, the detection possibility and performance superiorities of proposed mechanism.

Three-dimensional finite element analysis on the effect of maxillary incisor torque (상악 절치부-토크에 의한 치아 이동과 응력 분포에 관한 유한요소법적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the stress distribution in the periodontal tissue and the displacement of teeth when active torque was applied to the maxillary incisors by three-dimensional finite element analysis A three-dimensional finite element model consisted of the maxillary teeth and surrounding periodontal membrane, $.022{\times}.028$ Roth prescription bracket and stainless steel, NiTi and TMA rectangular ideal arch wires which were modeled by hexahedron elements. Applied active torques were 2, 5 and 10 degrees ThHe findings of this study showed that the reaction force acting or the bracket was the extrusion force on the mesial side of the incisors and canine and the intrusion force on the distal side of the incisors and canine. The amount of force and moment was greatest at the lateral incisor. When active anterior labial crown torque was applied. labial crown and distal tipping and Intrusion of the incisors took place. and lingual crown distal tipping and extrusion of the canine occured. An excessive force was concentrated on the lateral incisor, when the stainless steel wire was used NiTi or TMA wire is desirable for torque control.

Flight Envelope Load Factor Limit Logic Design for Helicopter Fly-By-Wire Controller (전자식 조정장치 헬리콥터의 하중 비행영역 제한 로직 설계)

  • This paper reports the load factor logic design for a fly-by-wire helicopter flight envelope protection. As a helicopter is very complex system with a rotor, fuselage, engine, etc., there are many constraints on the flight region. Because of these constraints, pilots should consider them carefully and have a heavy workload, which causes controllability degradation. In this respect, automatic logic is needed to free the pilot from these considerations. As one of these logics, the flight envelope protection logic for the load factor of a FBW helicopter was designed. The flight to exceed the load factor is caused by an abrupt pitch cyclic stick change. In this scheme, the load factor limit logic was added between the pilot stick command block and pitch attitude command block. From the current load value, the available attitude range was calculated dynamically and simulated on the helicopter simulator model to verify the performance. A comparison of the simulation results at the hovering and forward speed region with and without applying the load limiting logic showed that the load factor limit was exceeded more than 20% when the logic was not applied, whereas with the load factor limit logic the load factor was within the limit. In conclusion, a dynamically allocated limitation logic to helicopter FBW controller was verified by simulation.
