From a manufacturing standpoint it would be desirable to monitor the degradation of drawing die, that is essential for the maintenance of quality, the evaluation of product integrity and the reducing scrap. Acoustic emission is powerful method in monitoring fine wire drawing process, especially in detecting the die fracture at early stage. Experiments at so suggested that acoustic emission signals contained valuable information regarding the stage of a drawing process such as the surface appearance of products and the condition of lubrication. Using these informations makes AE monitoring techniques a possible tool in monitoring the drawing process operation. In order to approach this, this paper discusses the nature of acoustic emission signals produced in drawing process under various conditions. Experimental results are presented which illustrate the effects of wire and die material, lubricants, and drawing speed on the generation and the mean voltage level of acoustic emission signals. The results from these tests give controlling factors of acoustic emission generation.
Recently the quality improvement of the steel cord product is demanded by the tire market. After wire drawing process, produced residual stresses have a harmful effect on the durability of the wire and become the cause which decreases the quality of the product. Therefore, to improve the quality of the steel cord product, the research regarding the method of residual stress relaxation is necessary. To evaluate the quality of the drawn wire, it is important to measure the residual stress, because the residual stress decides a variety of the quality level which is demanded in the drawn wire. This study proposed a residual stress relaxation method in the drawn wire using FE analysis. The validity of the analysis results was verified by nanoindentation test.
PIT method which is used at fabricating Bi-2223/Ag HTS wire includes a drawing process, conventional deformation method. Drawing of meta1(Ag) and ceramic (BiSrCaCuO) composite is also difficult and significant for uniform deformation. In this paper, parameters of uniform deformation was studied at Bi-2223/ Ag multifilamentary HTS wire. Powder and rod as a starting precursor was compared at 55 filament and 54 filament Bi-2223/Ag HTS wire, respectively. Micro-hardness and area COV of the filaments was also evaluated when the diameters were decreased through drawing operations.

A commercial AA1070 alloy for electrical wire is severely deformed by drawing process in which a rod with an initial diameter of 9mm into is reduced to a wire of 2mm diameter. The drawn AA1070 wire is then annealed at various temperatures from 200 to 450 ℃ for 2h. Changes in microstructure, mechanical properties and electrical properties of the specimens with annealing temperature are investigated in detail. The specimen begins partially to recrystallize at 250 ℃; above 300 ℃ it is covered with equiaxed recrystallized grains over all regions. Fiber textures of {110}<111> and {112}<111> components are mainly developed, and {110}<001> texture is partially developed as well. The tensile strength tends to decrease with annealing temperature due to the occurrence of recovery or/and recrystallization. On the other hand, the elongation of the annealed wire increases with the annealing temperature, and reaches a maximum value of 33.3 % at 300 ℃. Electric conductivity of the specimens increases with annealing temperature, and reaches a maximum value of 62.6 %IACS after annealing at 450 ℃. These results are discussed in comparison with those for the other aluminum alloy.
In forming processes, die failure must be considered before die design. One of the main reasons of die failure in industrial application of metal forming technologies is wear. The die wear affects the tolerances of formed parts, metal flow and costs of processes etc. The only way to control these failures is to develop methods which allow prediction of the die wear and which are suited to be used in the design state in order to optimize the process. In this paper, wire drawing processes were simulated using the rigid-plastic finite element method and its results were used for predicting the die wear by Archard's wear model. The effects of the temperature rising on the wear profiles of die were also investigated. The simulation results were compared with the measured die profiles.
Low temperature ${\delta}$-precipitation phenomenon below 2-step aging ($718^{\circ}C$, $8hr+621^{\circ}C$, 8 hr) temperature of cold drawn Inconel 718 alloy wire was investigated. The investigation was carried out on wires with a cold drawn ratio of 0, 20, 50 and 70% using OM, SEM, XRD, TEM, and DSC. In microstructures of 50 and 70% drawn wire, many precipitates were found along the grain boundaries and the twin boundaries in deformation band. From the results of the XRD and TEM analysis, the precipitates were identified as plate-like ${\delta}$-phase. From the results of the DSC analysis, it was also found that a temperature of ${\delta}$-precipitation decreases with an increase of the cold drawn ratio. We concluded that cold drawing of inconel 718 wire promotes the ${\delta}$-precipitation, and under the condition of a high drawing ratio, the ${\delta}$-phase could be precipitated at a temperature below the aging temperature ($718^{\circ}C$).
To determine the origin of the inhomogeneous microstructure and texture observed in drawn and annealed high purity copper wires, two kinds of drawing process conditions and their influence was investigated. The regular condition, based on a symmetric die, and a condition designed intentionally to produce an inhomogeneous shear deformation using an asymmetric die were employed. The difference in intensity of <111>-<100> distributed texture between the two wires confirmed that the wire drawn under the asymmetric die condition experienced a higher amount of shear deformation. The extensive shear strain in the wire drawn under the asymmetric die condition gave rise to inhomogeneous primary and secondary recrystallization behavior. After annealing at $200^{\circ}C$, grains with <100> texture, which were larger than the surrounding recrystallized grains, were extensively present on one half circle of the wire drawn under the asymmetric die condition, while larger grains with <100> were sparsely observed around the middle region of the wire drawn under the regular condition. Interestingly, the area where the larger grains with <100> texture existed was identical to the area where the high shear strain occurred during drawing in both wires. During annealing at $400^{\circ}C$, grains with <112> texture started to grow abnormally at the center of both wires as a result of secondary recrystallization. After annealing at $900^{\circ}C$ grains with <112> due to secondary recrystallization occupied the entire region of the wire drawn under the regular condition. On the other hand, in the wire drawn under the asymmetric die condition and then annealed at $900^{\circ}C$, the <100> oriented grains as a result of the normal grain growth of the larger <100> grains which were observed after annealing at $200^{\circ}C$, coexisted with the abnormally grown <112> grains. These results indicate that dynamic recrystallization induced by the shear strain during drawing plays an important role in the inhomogeneity of the microstructure and texture of wires after annealing.
This paper presents a study on defects in pearlite lamella structure of high carbon steel by means of finite-element method(FEM) simulation. High carbon pearlite steel wire is characterized by its nano-sized microstructure feature of alternation ferrite and cementite. FEM simulation was performed based on a suitable FE model describing the boundary conditions and the exact material behavior. Due to the lamella structure in high carbon pearlite steel wire, material plastic behavior was taken into account on deformation of ferrite and cementite. The effects of many important parameters(reduction in area, semi-die angle, lamella spacing, cementite thickness) on wire drawing process can be predicted by DEFORM-2D. It is possible to obtain the important basic data which can be guaranteed in the ductility of high carbon steel wire by using FEM simulation.
Micro-wire made from straightening process invents high added value and it has been adopted many industrial fields. Therefore, many research activities about straightening process are advanced actively. It is known that fine straightness of micro-wire can be obtained by removing residual stress induced during the manufacturing processes. Generally, residual stress is removed or minimized through several drawing processes with heat treatment. In this study, the residual stress at each straightening process is calculated and monitored by finite element analyses and the main reason of stress change is investigated.
