Wangdol-cho, located 23 km offshore of Hupo in southwest of East Sea, is underwater rock floor, called to Wangdol-Am or Wangdol-Jam and has three tops as Mat-Jam, Middle-Jam and Set-Jam. The composition, abundance, diversity and community structure were investigated in winter and summer in 2002 around Wangdol-cho. The temperature around the Northwest and Southeast part of Wangdol-cho was influenced by the North Korea Cold Current (NKCC) and East Korea Warm Current (EKWC), respectively. Nutrient and chlorophyll-a concentration were higher at the top of Wangdol-cho than other area. A total of 41 genera and 78 species of phytoplankton were identified. The average cell abundance of phytoplankton in winter and summer were $286{\times}10^3\;cells/m^3,\;432{\times}10^3\;cells/m^3$ respectively. The largest community was Bacillariophyta containing 52 taxa. The dominant species were Lauderia anulata and Coscinodiscus spp. which preferred cold water in winter. In contrast, warm water species such as Rhizosolenia stolterfothii and Ceratium spp. were dominant in summer. The average species diversity index of phytoplankton in winter was higher than that in summer. According to dominant species and standing crops, phytoplankton community resulted in a clear separation. One group was western area, which showed low density, and the other was eastern area, which showed the higher density. The abundance and species composition of phytoplankton. were affected by topological characteristics around Wangdol-cho.
To estimate the effects of limitation nutrients for phytoplankton growth and its influences on short-term variations of a winter phytoplankton community structure, we investigated the abiotic and biotic factors of surface and bottom waters at 20 stations of inner and offshore areas from 6 to 7 February in Gwangyang Bay, Korea. Also, several algal bio-assay studies were conducted to identify any additional nutrient effects on phytoplankton assemblage using surface water for the assay. The dominant species in the bay was diatom Skeletonema costatum, which occupied more than 70% of total species in most stations (St.1-16) of the inner bay. According to a cluster and multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis based on phytoplankton community data from each station, the bay was divided into three groups. The first group included stations from the south-western parts of Myodo lsland, which can be characterized as a semien-closed eutrophic area with high phytoplankton abundance. The second group included most stations from the north-eastern part of Myodo lsland, influenced indirectly by surface water currents from offshore of the bay. The standing phytoplankton crops were lower than those of the first group. The other cluster was restricted to samples collected from offshore of the bay. In the bay, silicon (Si) and phosphorus (P) were not a major limiting factor for phytoplankton production. However, since the DIN: DIP and DSi: DIN ratios clearly demonstrated that there were potential stoichiometric N limitations, nitrogen (N) was considered as a limiting factor. Based on the algal bio-assay, in vivo fluorescence values in N (+) added experiments were higher compared to control and P added experiments. Our results suggested that nitrogen may act as one of the most important factors in controlling primary production during winter in Gwangyang Bay.
A survey was conducted to analyze seasonal dynamics of the phytoplankton community at 22 stations on the surface and bottom layers in the Anma Islands of Yeonggwang(AIY) in the southern West Sea, Korea from the spring of 2020 to the winter of 2021, using a marine survey vessel Ed Ocean. Based on the survey results, there were 87 phytoplankton species in 52 genera, diatoms accounted for 67.8%, dinoflagellates 26.5%, silicoflagellates 3.5%, and cryptomonads and euglenoids accounted for 1.1% each. By season, it was simple in spring and relatively varied in winter. The phytoplankton standing crop on the surface was low (28.8±30.1 cells mL-1) in summer and high (87.0±65.1 cells mL-1) in spring. In the phytoplankton community, diatoms showed a high share (over 80%) throughout the year, and Skeletonema costatum-ls was the dominant species with a dominance of more than 60% in spring and winter, and 34.6% and 24.2% in summer and autumn, respectively. The diversity expressing the characteristics of the community structure was high (2.79±0.45) in autumn and low (1.82±0.18) in spring, unlike the phytoplankton standing crop. However, the dominance was high at (0.86±0.08) in spring and low (0.44j0.13) in autumn. Based on the results of principal component analysis (PCA) using environmental and phytoplankton-related factors, it was estimated that the biological oceanographic environmental characteristics seen through the phytoplankton community in the AIY were dominated by nutrients supplied from open seawater and surface sediments by seawater mixing, such as tidal mixing.

We conducted a seasonal field survey to analyze the distribution patterns of a phytoplankton community and biological oceanographic characteristics in the Geum river estuary in 2018. The results showed that the phytoplankton community consisted of 58 genera and 116 species, showing a relatively simple distribution. It was controlled by diatoms at 70.2%, a low number of species in winter and spring, and a high number in summer and autumn. The phytoplankton cell density ranged from 10.0 to 2,904.0 cells mL-1, with an average layer of 577.2 cells mL-1, which was low in autumn and high in winter. The seasonal succession of phytoplankton dominant species was mainly centric diatoms from winter to summer, including Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii, Cerataulina bergonii, and Skeletonema costatum-ls in winter, S. costatum-ls and C. bergonii in spring, and Eucampia zodiacus and Th. nordenskioeldii in summer. However, the autumn species depended upon the regions, with the inner bay dominated by the centric diatom, Aulacoseira cf. granulata, the mixed areas by S. costatum-ls, and the open sea by the dinoflagellate, Lingulodinium polyedra. According to principal component analysis (PCA), the phytoplankton community was greatly affected by the inflow and expansion of freshwater, including high nutrients, which are introduced annually through the rivermouth weir in Geum river estuary. However, the estuary, which is strongly affected by annual freshwater, was limited to areas near Geumran Island, which is adjacent to the river-mouth weir.
A study on the community and distribution of phytoplankton of the Kum River Estuary has been done in fall, 1980 and spring, 1981. Ond hundred and one taxa representing 22 families, 41 genera, 107 species, 2 varieties, and 2 forms were identified. The community of the study area composed mainly of diatom species icluding the very small fraction of dinoflagellates, blue-greens and greens. The dominant species were Skeletonema costatum, Paralia sulcata, and Asterionella kariana. The total standing crop of phytoplankton of winter samples was 115,000 cells/1 in average and that of spring samples was, 1,320,333 cells/1 in average. Of the representative members, dominant species above appeared moree than 10% of the total standing crop, Skeletonema costatum being maximized up to 46%. In spring Asterionella japonica, Thalassionema nitzschioides, and Chaetoceros curvistetus appeared 3∼8%, and Thalassiosira excentricus 3% in winter. The distribuion of marine forms showed negative correlation with that of fresh water forms, although the brackish-water forms showed no relationship. This change pattern of marine, brackish and fresh-water forms are discussed with the results of time series analysis. A list of phytoplankton species observed in this study is added.
Seasonal changes of aquatic environmental factors, phytoplankton biomass and primary productivity were investigated in the Jido pond (a phytoplankton proliferating pond) from August 1982 to October 1983. Secchi disc transparency, pH, alkalinity and inorganic nitrogen concentration ranged 24~105cm, 7.5~10.6, 50~175mgCaCO3/l 0.1~4.0mgN/l, respectively. The minimum values of transparency, alkalinity and inorganic nitrogen concentration and the maximum value of pH were obtained during the phytoplankton proliferating season. The phytoplankton biomass changed in the range of 51~1146mgchl/m3 with considerable fluctuations but maintained fairly constant in winter. Themaximum and minimum rates of monthly carbon inflow (net primary production) of the phytoplankton community attained 1190gc/m2 in August 1982 and 68g/m2 in February 1983, respectively. The annual rates of inflow and outflow from August 1982 to July 1983 were 7.384 and 7.396kgc/m2, respectively. Turnover rate of phytoplankton carbon and efficiency of radiation of the phytoplankton community varied in the ranges of 60~130%/day (annual mean, 90%/day) and 0.9~11.2% (annual mean, 6.3%), respectively.
To clarify the community structure of phytoplankton in the Kyeonggi Bay, the community analysis were performed to investigate the relationship between the environmental factors and the phytoplankton communities. Low diversity with occurrence of few dominant species throughout the year, except summer, implies that ecological environment of this study area is very unstable due to incessant physical perturbation and large fluctuation of other environmental factors. According to the results of the cluster analysis this study area could be divided into river discharge, polluted and unpolluted area. Principal component analysis of overall phytoplankton community in this area clearly showed four seasonal succession patterns grouped into the spring type, the summer type, the late summer type, the late autumn-winter type. Summer communities composed of common phytoplankton are highly correlated with temperature and transparency. Winter communities composed of most tychopelagic plankton are positively correlated with suspended substances and nutrient, while negatively correlated with transparency.
The obseuations on the seasonal fluctuations of phytoplankton community in Haechang Bay of the Korean southern sea were carried out during four seasons from 1997 to 1998. A total of 77 species of phytoplankton including 10 freshwater species, belonging to 51 Benera was identified. Seasonal succession of dominant species was evident in Haechang Bay; Chaetoceros cunisetus, Skeletonema costatum, Eurampia zodiacus, Dictyocha fibula and Ceratium furca in summer, C. curisetus in autunm, C. cunisetus Rhizosoienia setigera and E. zodiacus in winter and S. costatum in spring. The phytoplankton community in Haechang Bay showed various species composition and was occupied with centric diatoms all the year round, Densities of the phytoplankton cell number by the samples of Haechang Bay ranged from $8.4{\times}10^3\;cells/l\;to\;2.0{\times}10^5\;cells/l$ with the mean value of $9.2{\times}10^4\;cells/l$ in summer, from $3.2{\times}10^3\;cells/l\;to\;4.6{\times}10^6\;cells/l$ with mean of $6,2{\times}10^4\;cells/l$ in autumn, from $8.4{\times}10^3\;cells/l\;to\;4.3{\times}10^4\;cells/l$ with mean $2.2{\times}10^4\;cells/l$ in winter and from $1.0{\times}\;10^3\;cells/l to\;4.6{\times}10^4\;cells/l$, with mean of $1.1{\times}10^4\;cells/l$ in spring. Phytoplankton standing crops fluctuated with an annual mean of $4.7{\times}10^4 cells/l$ between the lowest value of $1.0{\times}10^3\;cells/l$ in spring and the highest value of $4.6{\times}10^5 cells/l$ in autumn, That is, phytoplankton standing crops was high in summer and autumn, while it was very low in winter and spring.
Physicochemical environments and phytoplankton community in the nakdong river middle basin were investigated during a period of 1 year from Nov. 1993 to Oct. 1994. The ranges of Physicochemical environment factors in the nakdong river middle basin were $3.6~27.4{\circ}C$ for temperature, 7.1~9.3 for pH, $7.1~12.7mg/{\ell}$for DO, $0.7~2.1mg/{\ell}$ for BOD, $31~52mg/{\ell}$ for alkalinity, $2.101~3.3mg/{\ell}$ for T-N, $0.052~0.099mg/{\ell}$ for T-p, $5.4~92.3mg/m^{3}$ for chlorophyll-a. The number of Phytoplankton was lowest in Jan. that is, 244ce11s/ml and that was highest in Sep. 1201 cells/ml. The increase of dominant genera were correlated with the total nomber of phytoplanktons. Bacillariaceae, chlorophyceae, cyanophyceae, and euglenophlrceae were to 74.5%, 20%, 3.5%, and 2.2% respectively. Bacillariaceae were abundant during all the year round except for Jun, Jul, Aug. Chlorophyceae were plentiful in Jun, Jul, Aug. Tase-and odor-causing algae and filter clogging algae were 72% in Nov. and 93.5% in Jun. They were abundant all the year round except for winter, so they influenced on the treatment of tap water system. They belong to the general asterionella, cyclotella, melosira, nitzschia of bacillariaceae and actinastrum, pediastrum of chlorophyceae. Dominace index was low in winter and high in umber. Diversity index and equitability index were low in summer and high in winter. Therefore, the structure of phytoplankton community of the nakdong river middle basin was different form season to season.
This study was carried out to investigate phytoplankton community structure in the Naktong river from January to December in 1999. In water quality, average value of pH were 8.1, BOD 2.5mg/$\ell$, COD 5.0mg/$\ell$, Chl-a 41$\mu\textrm{g}$/$\ell$, and $NH_4^+-N$ 0.08mg/$\ell$, respectively. Phytoplankton were identified 42 genera 76 species. Among these, diatoms were 39 species(51.3%), green algae 25 species(32.9%), cyanobacteria 4 species(5.3%), dinoflagellates 4 repectively. The highest standing crops were 33,023 cells/$m\ell$ in February at the Mulgum and the lowest 79 cells/$m\ell$ in March at the Goryung. Also, Standing crops were increased with proceeding from middle part to lower part. Seasonal succession of phytoplankton represented that Stephanodiscus hantzschii was dominant species in winter, Cyclotella menaghiniana and Synedra acus in spring, C. meneghiniana, S. acus, Aulacoseira granulata var. angustissima in summer, and A. granulata var. angustissima and C. meneghiniana in autumn. Ecological important species were 4 species, that are Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Cyclotella meneghiniana, Synedra acus, and Aulacoseira granulata var. angustissima. In the community analysis, dominance indices ranged from 0.434(August, Namji) to 0.999(January, February, Mulgum) and diversity indices from 0.026(February, Mulgum) to 3.073(September, Namji). According to the similarity index among the stations, it was generally defind as two areas such as middle(Goryung, Namji and Samryangjin) and lower part(Mulgum).
