The purpose of this study is to analyze the land-use changes in the coastal areas using system dynamics modeling and to provide directions for effective management to maintain coastal dune areas. This research process consists of four steps: First, we built the basic model based on the causal loop diagram which was analyzed the land-use change of Sindu-ri Coastal Dune. Second, a time series land-use change map using Arc Map was established. Third, the validity of the basic model was tested. Finally, three simulations were performed for the cut over area($100,000m^2/y$, $150,000m^2/y$, $200,000m^2/y$) of windbreak for maintaining the coastal dune areas. Simulation of the basic model showed that the area of the coastal dune will be consistently decreased. Based on the simulation, if windbreak were cut down $150,000m^2/y$, windbreak area will be restored to the target area in 2019. This study has the limitation which the simulation is progressed with a limited variable: area. Therefore, the modeling of coastal dune should be reflected various variables in the further study.
The anatomical characteristics, green moisture content, inorganic element concentration, and black heartwood percentage were compared between the Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) planted in a general mountain forest and in a windbreak forest for a mandarin orange field in Jeju island. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Black heartwood percentage was found to be much higher in the trees of windbreak forest than in those of general mountain forest. 2. Green moisture content of wood appeared to increase with the color change of heartwood from reddish brown to black. 3. Inorganic elements of $K_2O$ and CaO in the ray cells of black heartwood were thought to be one of the important factors for black heartwood formation. 4. Wood specific gravity and strength properties were comparatively lower in the trees of Jeju island than in those of southern part of the Korean peninsula. These properties, however, were found to be not significantly different between the trees of windbreak forest and general mountain forest in Jeju island.
Purpose: Thermal performance and air tightness of window are improved for the building energy efficiency. As the deteriorated houses are increased, the improve measures with low cost and easy installation are developed in the energy performance of window. Attached glazing and windbreak can be easily applied to the window with low cost. In this paper, the effect of the attached glazing and windbreak on the thermal performance and air tightness of window is analyzed as the measure to improve performance of window. Method: Thermal transmittance of glazing is evaluated through WINDOW simulation according to thickness of attached glazing and air cavity. Based on the simulation results, thermal transmittance, air tightness and condensation resistance performance of four cases are tested according to Korea standards. One type of PVC sliding double window is chosen as the specimen. For the analysis on low performance of window, the outside of window is excluded in the PVC sliding double window. Result: This study shows that thermal performance of glazing can be increased by the application of attached glazing. Furthermore, lower thermal performance of glazing can obtain the higher effect of attached glazing. The application of attached glazing and windbreak can effect on increasing thermal performance and air tightness of window.
In this study, the spatio-temporal patterns of salty wind by typhoon in Jeju Island and their damages to windbreak forests are examined. To investigate these patterns, field trips as well as analyses of meteorological data were conducted after the attack of typhoon BOLAVEN in late August, 2012. Collected data show that salty wind damage in windbreak trees by the typhoon was distinct in the southern and eastern coastal areas due to the southeasterly gusts with less precipitation. Most of trees including Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) within 8km from the coast as well as pine trees (Pinus thunbergii) along the coasts were damaged by salty water driven by the typhoon, but the magnitude of its damages and recovery rates of damaged vegetation varied by species. These results indicate that prediction and proactive activities for salty wind are needed to reduce its damages to local vegetation particularly before the arrival of a dry typhoon accompanying gusty wind.
The research was conducted windward of an irrigated Acacia amplicips Maslin windbreak established to protect As Salam Cement Plant from winds and moving sands. Two belts with approximate optical porosities of 50% and 20% were studied in River Nile State, Sudan. The research aimed at assessing the efficiency of the two belts in wind speed reduction and sand deposition. Research methods included: (i) estimation of optical porosity, (ii) measurements of windward wind speeds at a control and at distances of 0.5 h (h stands for windbreak height), 1 h and 2 h at two vertical levels of 0.25 h and 0.5 h, (iii) estimation of relative wind speeds at the three positions (distance and height) at windward and (iv) estimation of wind erosive forces and prediction of zones of sand deposition. Results show that while the two belts reduced windward wind speeds at the two levels for the three distances, belt II was more effective. Nearest sand deposition occurred at 2 h and 1h windward of belt II and belt I, respectively, at level 0.25 h. At level 0.5 h, sand was deposited only at 2 h windward of belt II and no sand deposition occurred windward of belt I. The study concludes that less porous windbreaks are more effective in reducing wind speed and in depositing sand in windward direction at a distance of not less than twice the belt height.

The purpose of this study is to estimate the impact of rainfall measurement according to the installation conditions of rain gauges: windbreak, grass mat, installation elevation or obstacle. Rain gauges were installed by the standards of Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA), and the rainfall measurement was conducted daily unit during two years(2007~2008). In conclusion, observed error of rain gauge did not affect whether windbreak was installed or not. If there is the obstacle around rain gauge, average error rate was increased about 3.3%: (2007year-2.49%, 2008year-4.10%). If rain gauge is located in a high place, average error rate was increased about 4.89%. Additionally, the observed error of rain gauge according to the wind speed has a positive correlation with obstacle and installation elevation and has a negative correlation with windbreak and has no affection with grass mat.
The influence of windbreak to minimize the ventilation velocity near the plant canopy of a greenhouse strawberry was thoroughly investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology. Windbreaks were constructed surrounding the plant canopy to control ventilation and maintain the concentration of the supplied $CO_2$ from the soil surface close to the strawberry plants. The influence of no windbreak, 0.15 m and 0.30 m height windbreaks with varied air velocity of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 m/s were simulated in the study. The concentrations of supplied $CO_2$ within the plant canopy of were measured. To simplify the model, plants were not included in the final model. Considering 1.0m/s wind velocity which is the normal wind velocity of greenhouses, the concentrations of $CO_2$ were approximately 420, 580 and 653 ppm ($1{\times}10^{-9}kg/m^3$) for no windbreak, 0.15 and 0.30 m windbreak height, respectively. Considering that the maximum concentration of $CO_2$ for the strawberry plants was around 600-800 ppm, the 0.30 m windbreak height is highly recommended. This study revealed that the windbreak was very effective in preserving $CO_2$ gas within the plant canopy. More so, the study also proved that the CFD technique can be used to determine the concentration of $CO_2$ within the plant canopy for the plants consumption at any designed condition. For an in-depth application of this study, the plants as well as the different conditions for $CO_2$ utilization, etc. should be considered.
This paper presents a study on the evacuation analysis in underground arcade. In this study, the effect of the exit with a windbreak door has been investigated by using evacuation simulation program (building EXODUS). Also, the simulation has included the impact of smoke, heat and toxic gases by fire simulation program (CFAST). The results were obtained for the conditions of without and with door of the two exit with 1,088 evacuation population. As a results, for non-fire evacuation, there was only a little difference of evacuation time for both conditions. However, for fire emergency evacuation, the evacuation time for the condition with door increased more 110 seconds than for the condition without door. When the auto door not opened, the evacuation time was increased more 670 seconds than for the condition without door. Consequently, in case of fire, the automatic door should be operating by the signal of fire detector and keep open when the fire accidents. To lead the evacuees well to the escape route the luminaries for an emergency exit sign have to be reinforced to the wall and floor around the exit.
In this work, in order to quantitatively predict the radiation flux and propose an idea about how to reduce the radiation damage, the radiation flux caused by pool fire of an LNG storage tank has been calculated using the RISC (Risk and Industrial Safety Consultant) proposed model under various conditions. Model predictions showed that the most important parameter affecting the radiation flux by the LNG pool fire is the wind speed. The extent of radiation damage to a target from fire flame was more significant with variation of wind speed at a low wind speed than with that at a high wind speed. It was found that the radiation damage by the former is substantially reduced with planting windbreak system around the plant. Since the windbreak is most economical than any other method, it is strongly suggested to plant a tree belt in the factory surroundings, especially near by the area of gas storage facilities, linking with water cooling and fire protection systems.

Reduction effect of the spread of odorant and fine dust through windbreak trees can be predicted through numerical analysis. However, there is a disadvantage that a large space and destructive experiments must be carried out each time to calculate the aerodynamic coefficient of the tree. In order to overcome these shortcomings, In this study, we aimed to estimate the aerodynamic coefficient (C0, C1, C2) by using image processing. Thuja occidentalis, which can be used as windbreak were used as the material. The leaf area index was estimated from the leaf area ratio using image processing with leaf weight, and the optical porosity was calculated through image processing of photos taken from the side while removing the leaves step-by-step. Correlation analysis was conducted with the aerodynamic coefficient of Thuja occidentalis calculated from the wind tunnel test and leaf area index and optical porosity calculated from the image analysis. The aerodynamic coefficient showed positive and negative correlations with the leaf area index and optical porosity, respectively. The results showed that the possibility of estimating the aerodynamic coefficient using image processing.
