  • Experiments were performed to investigate the effects of mud-flap width on the aeroacoustic noise generation inside high-speed trains. The open-circuit type wind tunnel was used. The measurement setup was custom-built to simulate intercoach spacing. From the measurements, the characteristics of the turbulent flow after the intercoach spacing and consequent generation of aeroacoustic noise inside the cabin was investigated. Especially the effects of mud flap length on the characteristics of the characteristics of the turbulent flow were identified. The mechanism of noise generation by analyzed interactions with structure vibration characteristics and generation characteristics of blocked pressure was investigated.

  • Modern wind turbines have been mainly erected in region where earthquake are rare or normally weak, especially Korea was thought as safety zone from earthquake. But recently, the earthquake occurs more and more frequently. So, the wind turbine design is required the structural and functional stability under the earthquake. The earthquake can influence normal operation, even if a weak earthquake. There are two ways to review the design under earthquake using Computer Applied Engineering (CAE). One is the Response Spectrum Analysis (RSA) the other is Time History Analysis (THA). In this research, dynamic response on time is obtained under the earthquake by taking into account ground accelerogram consistent with the relevant standards applied to the turbine foundation.

  • The usage of conventional tuned mass damper (TMD) was proved as an effective method for passive mitigating vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a bridge deck. Although a variety of linear TMD systems have been so far utilized for vibration control of suspension bridges, a sensitive TMD mechanism to wind spectrum frequency is lacking. Here, we introduce a bistable tuned mass damper (BTMD) mechanism which has an exceptional sensitivity to a broadband input of vortex shedding velocity for suppressing VIV in suspension bridge deck. By use of the Monte Carlo simulation, performance of the nonlinear BTMD is shown to be more efficient than the conventional linear TMD under two different wind load excitations of harmonic (sinusoidal) and broadband input of vortex shedding. Consequently, an appropriate algorithm is proposed to optimize the design parameters of the nonlinear BTMD for Kap Shui Mun Bridge, and then the BTMD system is localized for the interior deck of the suspension bridge.

  • A theoretical model based on Rayleigh-Ritz method is proposed to predict the resonance frequency of a W/T(Wind Turbine) tower structure supported by guy cables. In order to verify the validity of the theoretical model, a reduced W/T tower system is manufactured and tested. Frequency response and mode data are determined by modal testing and finite element analysis is performed to calculate the natural frequency of the tower model. Numerical and experimental results are compared with those by the theoretical analysis. Parametric study by the theoretical model shows how the cable tension and cable elasticity influence the resonance frequency of the W/T tower structure. Finally, vibration response under various rotating speed is investigated to examine the possibility of severe resonance.

  • This paper presents observations made on four-bundled conductor transmission lines concerning the behavior of conductors under the effect of natural winds. To know the wind-induced vibration status and how to control it, wind-induced vibrations have been recorded and analyzed from the real transmission lines. From the field observation and analysis results, subspan oscillation was found to be the main type of vibration. In addition, the data also revealed some common characteristics of the observation sites with high maintenance rates. The results will be used in controlling the subspan oscillations and protecting the conductors.

  • In this paper, characteristics of infrasound and low-frequency noise emission from large modern wind turbines are experimentally investigated. The sound measurement procedures of IEC 61400-11 and ISO 7196 are utilized to field test and evaluation of noise emission from each of 1.5 MW and 660 kW wind turbines using the stall regulation and the pitch control for the power regulation, respectively. It was found that the G-weighted SPLs of low-frequency noise including infrasound shows positive correlation with the wind speeds, irrespective of methods of power regulation. This highlights the potential complaint of local community against the infrasound and low-frequency noise of wind turbines. The comparison of measured data with the existing hearing thresholds and criteria curves shows that it is highly probable that the low-frequency noise from the 1.5 MW and 660 kW wind turbines in the frequency range over 30 Hz leads to the psychological complaint of ordinary adults, and that the infrasound in the frequency range from 5 Hz to 8 Hz causes the complaint by rattling the house fitting such as doors and windows.

  • This study investigated the problems in current practice of drive-train resonance analysis procedure and suggested solutions. The first problem is the resonance occurrence at the un-identified resonance point by the current practice, as for a solution the force spectrum analysis for each critical force transmitting component was suggested. The second one is the inaccurate estimation of potential resonance point in eigenfrequency analysis because of the non-consideration about the eigenfrequency dependency on rotor-speed, the fine linearization at each rotor speed point all over operational range was proposed to account for the affection. Lastly the insufficient time for resonance activation under run-up simulation condition was recognized as a problem in resonance load increasing analysis, as an alternative, steady state condition was suggested to estimate the maximum load increasing level.

  • The commercial tools to simulate the non-linear dynamic characteristics of wind turbine system are various but, the tool take much time to simulate the control algorithm and require many input variables. In this paper, the procedures to derive the simplified 4-degree-of-freedom mathematical model of a 2-MW wind turbine which could be used at the initial design stage of the controller are proposed based on RISO's suggested method. In this model, the 1st tower fore-after bending motion and 1st blade flapping motion are also considered in addition to the rotor-generator rotation motion in the 2-DOF model. The effectiveness of the 4-DOF model is examined comparing with the 2-DOF model and verification of the simplified model is accomplished through modal analysis for whole wind turbine system.

  • In this study, wind loads transmitted to a transmission tower from transmission lines are mitigated using rotational viscoelastic dampers. First, the wind load characteristics in a transmission tower is investigated considering the effect of the transmission lines through stochastic analysis. The assemblage of the transmission line and insulator are modeled as a double pendulum system connected to the SDOF model of the tower. From the result of the stochastic analysis, the background component of the overturing moment caused by the wind loads acting on the transmission lines are found to have considerable portion in the total overturning moment. Based on this observation result, a strategy Installing rotational viscoelastic damper (VED) between tower arm and transmission line is proposed for the mitigation of the transmission line reactions, which play a role as dynamic loads on a transmission tower. For the purpose of verification, time history analysis is conducted for different wind velocities and VED parameters. The analysis result shows that the rotational VED is effective for the mitigation of the background component rather than the resonance component of the transmission line reactions and achieves the reduction ratio of 50% even for higher wind speed.
