  • Potential yield of micro wind turbine on the roof of urban high rise buildings is estimated. Urban wind profile is modeled as logarithmic profile above the mean building height with roughness length 0.8, displacement 7.5 m. Mean wind velocity from the meteorological agency data at the hight of 50m is used. Wind velocity changes are simulated on the rectangular roof of 26, 45, 53 degree pitch and the circular roof by computational fluid dynamics and RNG k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence models. Wind velocity increased approximately by a factor of the order of 270 % on the 26 degree pitched roof. In the 100 m and 200 m high buildings, wind enhancement is greater at the front side than at the center of the building. In the building arrangement model wind velocity changes abruptly and it becomes wind gusts. When commercial wind turbines are installed on the building roof, average power and annual power generation enhanced by 3~4 times than normal wind velocity at 50m and 6 kw wind turbine can generate 1053 kwh per month on the 26 degree pitched roof at 50m height and sufficiently supply electrical power with 15 household for common electrical use and food waste disposer. However, power output will vary significantly by the wind conditions in the order of $\pm$ 20 %.

  • Climatic characteristics were described using the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and the met-mast on Dongbok·Bukchon region. The influences of meteorological conditions on the power performance of wind turbines were presented using the data of Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) and met-mast of the Dongbok·Bukchon Wind Farm (DBWF) located in Jeju Island. The stability was categorized into three parameters (Richardson number, Turbulence intensity, and Wind shear exponent). DBWF was dominant in unstable atmospheric conditions. At wind speeds of 14 m/s or more, the proportion of slightly unstable conditions accounted for more than 50%. A clear difference in the power output of the wind turbine was exhibited in the category of atmospheric stability and turbulence intensity (TI). Particularly, a more sensitive difference in power performance was showed in the rated wind speeds of the wind turbine and wind regime with high TI. When the flow had a high turbulence at low wind speeds and a low turbulence at rated wind speeds, a higher wind energy potential was produced than that in other conditions. Finally, the high-efficiency of the wind farm was confirmed in the slightly unstable atmospheric stability. However, when the unstable state become stronger, the wind farm efficiency was lower than that in the stable state.

  • The installed capacity of wind turbines in KOREA are growing and enlarging by the central government's support program. Thus, the importance of power performance verification and its uncertainty analysis are recognizing rapidly. This paper described the Power testing results of a 1.5MW wind turbine and analysed an uncertainty level of measurements. The measured power curves are very closely coincide with the calculated one and the annual power production under the given Rayleigh wind speed distribution are estimated with the $4.7{\sim}22.0%$ of uncertainty but, in the dominant wind speed region as $7{\sim}8m/s$, the uncertainty are stably decreased to $7{\sim}8%$.

  • The external conditions for estimating dynamic wind loads of wind turbines, such as the turbulence, the extreme wind, the mean velocity gradients and the flow angles, are simulated over GangWon Wind Energy Test Field placed in one of the most complex terrain in Korea. Reference meteorological data has been gathered at a height of 30m from 2003 to 2004 with a ultrasonic anemometer. The absolute value of the spectral energy are simulated and the verification of this prediction has been carried out with comparing to the experimental data. The most desirable place for constructing new wind turbine are resulted as Point 2 and Point 3 due to the lower value of Turbulence Intensity and the higher value of wind resource relatively.

  • In this study, we have constructed the method of design about H-Darrieus wind turbine, a kind of VAWT(vertical axis wind turbine). The NACA 0012 airfoil is chosen for the blade, and DMS(double multiple streamtube) theory is used for the analysis. The flow field is computed with numerical solution of rotating Navier-Stokes equations. From the result of experimental data of power coefficient curves, the validity of the present research is checked. Through the non-dimensional parameter analysis for the wind turbine design, we estimated the efficiency of wind turbine with the resultant Cp's, with which an efficient design of VAWT is achieved, and aerodynamic characteristics are presented systematically.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the sensitivity of WindSIM in complex terrain. As the flat areas for wind turbine installation become scarce globally, it becomes inevitable to install wind turbines in complex terrain. In order to predict annual energy production (AEP) in a more precise manner in complex terrain, it is of great importance to conduct such research. Three parameters: reference velocity, roughness and resolution have been chosen to see to which parameter WindSIM was the most sensitive in terms of annual energy production in complex terrain. By fixing two parameters and setting one parameter as a variable, it could be easily found that how annual energy production was effected by the change in each parameter.

  • The present paper describes the scale effect correction method for wind turbine by using CFD(computational fluid dynamics). For the correct ions of wind turbine scale effect, various researches on the helicopter rotor scale effect were Investigated and feasibility study of methods was performed to correct wind turbine scale effect The present paper also introduces new scale effect correction method based on two dimensional lift slope modification. In order to test the Present method, performance analyses of NREL Phase VI wind turbines under various scale conditions were carried out by using CFD. The present method showed reasonable results when applied to NREL Phase VI wind turbine.

  • Wind turbine blades represent a key component of wind turbines, which extract energy from the wind. In the present study, the structural design of a small wind turbine blade is undertaken using a numerical analysis. The reliability of numerical results is verified through a comparison with the full-scale structural test data of a current blade. To modify the blade design, the blade was divided into several sections and the effect of the thickness of each section was investigated in a numerical analysis. Finally, the modified blade was designed with a lightweight and high-strength.

  • 750kW gearless type wind turbine, named U50, is developed by UNISON in Korea. The newly developed wind turbine should be evaluated the power curve and the estimated annual energy production by following international standard to verify the power performance characteristics. This paper shows the test and evaluation procedure according to IEC 61400-12-1 which specifies a procedure of measuring the power performance characteristics of a single wind turbine and applies to the testing of wind turbines of all types and sized connected to the electrical power network. And this paper also shows the power performance characteristics for U50 wind turbine which is determined in accordance with IEC regulation.
