  • Soil dust emitted from large scale construction sites in urban areas has posed a significant health threats to local residents by exacerbating air quality. Water-spraying (moistening) is commonly practiced to lower the dust emission in construction sites, but its long term effectiveness is highly questionable. In this study, the utility of starch and PVA(polyvinyl alcohol) was investigated in suppression of the soil dust emissions in construction sites in Seoul areas. The efficiency of the two suppressants was tested with test soil sample in a lab-scale wind tunnel box under different concentrations of suppressants and soil textures. Starch and PVA showed the superior ability to suppress soil dust emission as compared to moistening, resulting in PM10 and PM2.5 lower than the daily limit values of 30 and 15 ㎍/㎥ respectively. PVA showed higher suppression capability than starch for all conditions. The test soils mixed with suppressants also showed dramatically enhanced aggregate stability compared to the non-treated soil.

  • The comparison of two commercial codes(FLUENT and STAR-CCM+) and an open-source code(OpenFOAM) are carried out for the aerodynamic analysis of flight vehicles at low speeds. Tailless blended-wing-body UCAV, main wing and propeller of HALE UAV(EAV-3) are chosen as geometries for the investigation. Using the same mesh, incompressible flow simulations are carried out and the results from three different codes are compared. In the linear region, the maximum difference of lift and drag coefficients of UCAV are found to be less than 2% and 5 counts, respectively and shows good agreement with wind tunnel test data. In a stall region, however, the reliability of RANS simulation is found to become poor and the uncertainty according to code also increases. The effect of turbulence models and meshes generated from different tools are also examined. The transition model yields better results in terms of drag which are much closer to the test data. The pitching moment is confirmed to be sensitive to the existence and the location of transition. For the case of EAV-3 wing, the difference of results with ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST model is increased when Reynolds number becomes low. The results for the propeller show good agreement within 1% difference of thrust. The reliability and uncertainty of three codes is found to be reasonable for the purpose of engineering use. However, the physical validity and reliability of results seem to be carefully examined when ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST model is used for aerodynamic simulation at low speeds or low Reynolds number conditions.

  • Recently, the noise of vehicle is the one of the key factors for customers to purchase a vehicle and the most important part which is related to the noise is the exhaust system. Thus, car makers have their own ways to assess this exhaust noise not only to decrease the level of noise but to enhance the feeling of it. Typically, to do these things in the early stage of development, the tuning code of the exhaust system has to be made by CAE tool, which is very reliable but expensive, and the prototype parts of this code would be made for the validation test. Then this process can be iterated to meet the target of the performance. In this study, a new algorithm which adapts the '3 dimensional convective sound wave theory 'and 'Doppler effect' has been developed. With this new algorithm, a brand new system for the calculation of tail pipe noise has been developed and validated by acoustic wind tunnel test. As a result of this study, various comparisons and have been carried out, for example, the comparison with other CAE tool has been performed for the validity and the improvement of the new calculation code could be achieved.

  • In GPS/INS/barometer navigation system for UAV, vertical channel damping loop was introduced to suppress divergence of the vertical axis error of INS, which could be reduced to the level of accuracy of pressure altitude measured by a pitot-static tube. Because static pressure measured by the pitot-static tube depends on the speed and attitude of the vehicle, static pressure error models, based on aerodynamic data from wind tunnel test, CFD analysis, and flight test, were applied to reduce the error of pressure altitude. Through flight tests and sensitivity analyses, the error model using the ratio of differential pressure and static pressure turned out to be superior to the model using only differential pressure, especially in case of high altitude flight. Both models were proposed to compensate the effect of vehicle speed change and used differential and static pressure which could be obtained directly from the output of pressure transducer.

  • In this paper, the surface recession of ablative materials was quantitatively analyzed using a high-speed camera and a three-dimensional profilometer. The ablation tests of the graphite and carbon/phenolic composite samples were performed using a 0.4 MW arc-heated wind tunnel for simulating the atmospheric re-entry environment. The real-time images during the ablation test were captured by the high-speed camera, and analyzed to calculate the surface recession and recession rate. Also, the surface data of samples were obtained using a three-dimensional profilometer, and the surface recession was precisely calculated from the difference of height between the surface data before and after the test. It is effective to complement the two measurement results in the comprehensive analysis of surface recession phenomena.

  • Air-launch means launching from aircraft such as fighter jets, and has various advantages, such as cost reduction and less environmental/weather impact during launch. However, there are no air-launch satellite in Korea. Examining air-based launch satellite and anti-satellite missiles operated and developed by foreign private companies and various countries confirmed the necessity of domestic research and development. In South Korea, various research activities, including satellite launch system design and development approaches for different launch platforms, have been carried out mainly by academia. Development of upward maneuver air launch technology which is launched in the air when the aircraft is moving upward is suggested. Additionally, an introduction to wind tunnel tests for safety separation verification is provided. A new concept for a test facility has been suggested to conduct drop tests.

  • This paper proposes a novel approach to model updating for a large-scale cable-stayed bridge based on ambient vibration tests coupled with a hybrid metaheuristic search algorithm. Vibration measurements are carried out under excitation sources of passing vehicles and wind. Based on the measured structural dynamic characteristics, a finite element (FE) model is updated. For long-span bridges, ambient vibration test (AVT) is the most effective vibration testing technique because ambient excitation is freely available, whereas a forced vibration test (FVT) requires considerable efforts to install actuators such as shakers to produce measurable responses. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a famous metaheuristic algorithm applied successfully in numerous fields over the last decades. However, PSO has big drawbacks that may decrease its efficiency in tackling the optimization problems. A possible drawback of PSO is premature convergence leading to low convergence level, particularly in complicated multi-peak search issues. On the other hand, PSO not only depends crucially on the quality of initial populations, but also it is impossible to improve the quality of new generations. If the positions of initial particles are far from the global best, it may be difficult to seek the best solution. To overcome the drawbacks of PSO, we propose a hybrid algorithm combining GA with an improved PSO (HGAIPSO). Two striking characteristics of HGAIPSO are briefly described as follows: (1) because of possessing crossover and mutation operators, GA is applied to generate the initial elite populations and (2) those populations are then employed to seek the best solution based on the global search capacity of IPSO that can tackle the problem of premature convergence of PSO. The results show that HGAIPSO not only identifies uncertain parameters of the considered bridge accurately, but also outperforms than PSO, improved PSO (IPSO), and a combination of GA and PSO (HGAPSO) in terms of convergence level and accuracy.

  • Polynomial response surface model has been widely used as approximation model which replace physical or numerical experiments in various engineering fields. Generally, low-order model is used to reduce experimental points required to construct the response surfaces, but this approach has limit to represent the highly non-linear phenomena. In this paper, we developed the method to expand modeling capabilities of polynomial response surfaces by increasing order of polynomial and selecting optimum polynomial basis functions. Genetic algorithm is used to choose optimal polynomial basis functions. Developed method was applied to analytic functions with 1 or 2 variables and wind tunnel test data modeling. The results show that this method is applicable to building response surface models for highly non-linear phenomena.

  • This study presents a result on aero-acoustic characteristics of pantograph panheads. To analyze the fluid flow around the panhead and resulting sound radiation, simple models of panhead were used in the numerical simulations called Lattice-Boltzmann method. The simulation results were verified using the wind tunnel test. The main aerodynamic noise was generated from the vortex shedding which is characterized by the Strouhal number, flow speed and geometry. The reduction in the radiated noise with simultaneously achieving increased lifting force was implemented for the simple rectangular geometry used in this study. Also, it was shown that the radiated sound power was significantly reduced by minimizing vortex shedding using through-holes or streamline shapes.
