  • A wind generator (WG) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system is presented here. It comprises of a variable-speed wind generator, a high-efficiency boost-type dc/dc converter and a control unit. The advantages of the aimed system are that it does not call for the knowledge of the wind speed or the optimal power characteristics and that it operates at a variable speed, thus providing high efficiency. The WG operates at variable speed and thus suffers lower stress on the shafts and gears compared to constant-speed systems. It results in a better exploitation of the available wind energy, especially in the low wind-speed range of 2.5-4.5 m/s. It does not depend on the WG wind and rotor-speed ratings or the dc/dc converter power rating. Higher reliability, lower complexity and cost, and less mechanical stress of the WG. It can be applied to battery-charging applications.

  • This paper presents experimental results and its assessment of a variable-speed wind power generation system (VSWPGS) using permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) and boost chopper circuit (BCC). Experimental results are obtained by a test bench with a wind turbine emulator (WTE). WTE reproduces the behaviors of a windmill by using servo motor drives. The mechanical torque references to drive the servo motor are calculated from the windmill wing profile, wind velocity, and windmill rotational speed. VSWPGS using PMSG and BCC has three speed control modes for the level of wind velocity to control the rotational speed of the wind turbine. The control mode for low wind velocity regulates an armature current of generator with BCC. The control mode for middle wind velocity regulates a DC link voltage with a vector-controlled inverter. The control mode for high wind velocity regulates a pitch angle of the wind turbine with a pitch angle control system. The hybrid of three control modes extends the variable-speed range. BCC simplifies the maintenance of VSWPGS while improving reliability. In addition, VSWPGS using PMSG and BCC saves cost compared with VSWPGS using a PWM converter.

  • The purpose of this paper is to gain a greater understanding of the performance of practical wind turbine generating systems with differing output power controllers and controlling means for wind turbine speed. Subjected wind turbines, both equipped with an asynchronous power generator, are located at two sites and are defined as wind turbine A and wind turbine B in this study, respectively. Their performance differences are examined by measuring wind speed and electric parameters. The study suggests that both wind turbines have a clear linkage between current and output power fluctuations. Comparison of the fluctuations to wind speed fluctuation, although they are triggered primarily by wind speed fluctuation, clearly indicates the specific behaviors inherent to the respective turbine control mechanisms.

  • In this paper a practical modelling methodology is presented for a series of aero- servo- elastic- coupled numerical analyses of small wind turbine operation, with particular emphasis on variable speed generator modelling in various wind speed conditions. The following characteristics are determined using the available computer tools: the tip speed ratio as a function of the generator constant (under the assumption of constant wind speed), the turbine coefficient of power as a function of the tip speed ratio (the torque curve is modified accordingly and generator speed and power curves are plotted), turbine power curves and coefficient of power curve as functions of the incoming wind speed. The last stage is to determine forces and torques acting on rotor blades and turbine tower for specific incoming wind speeds in order to examine the impact of the stall phenomena on these values (beyond the rated power of the turbine). It is shown that the obtained results demonstrate a valuable guideline for small wind turbines design process.

  • In this paper, a novel method for wind speed estimation in wind power generation systems is presented. The proposed algorithm is based on estimating the wind speed using Support-Vector-Machines for regression (SVR). The wind speed is estimated using the generator power-speed characteristics as a set of training vectors. SVR is trained off-line to predict a continuos-valued function between the system's inputs and wind speed value. The predicted off-line function as well as the instantaneous generator power and speed are then used to determine the unknown winds speed on-line. The simulation results show that SVR can define the corresponding wind speed rapidly and accurately to determine the optimum generator speed reference for maximum power point tracking.

  • In this paper, a novel loss minimization of an induction generator in wind energy generation systems is presented. The proposed algorithm is based on the flux level reduction, for which the generator d-axis current reference is estimated using support vector regression (SVR). Wind speed is employed as an input of the SVR and the samples of the generator d-axis current reference are used as output to train the SVR algorithm off-line. Data samples for wind speed and d-axis current are collected for the training process, which plots a relation of input and output. The predicted off-line function and the instantaneous wind speed are then used to determine the d-axis current reference. It is shown that the effect of loss minimization is more significant at low wind speed and the loss reduction is about to 40% at 4[m/s] wind speed. The validity of the proposed scheme has been verified by experimental results.

  • In this paper, a novel control algorithm to minimize the power loss of the induction generator for wind power generation system is presented. The proposed method is based on the flux level reduction, where the flux level is computed from the machine model for the optimum d-axis current of the generator. For the vector-controlled induction generator, the d-axis current controls the excitation level in order to minimize the generator loss while the q-axis current controls the generator torque, by which the speed of the induction generator is controlled according to the variation of the wind speed in order to produce the maximum output power. Wind turbine simulator has been implemented in laboratory to validate the theoretical development. The experimental results show that the loss minimization process is more effective at low wind speed and that the percent of power loss saving can approach to 25%. Experimental results are shown to verify the validity of the proposed scheme.

  • For maximum output power, wind turbines are usually controlled at the speed which is determined by the optimal tip-speed ratio. This method requires information of wind speed and the power conversion coefficient which is varied by the pitch angle control. In this paper, a new maximum output power control algorithm using fuzzy logic control is proposed, which doesn't need this information. Instead, fuzzy controllers use information of the generator speed and the output power. By fuzzy rules, the fuzzy controller produces a new generator reference speed which gives the maximum output power of the generator for variable wind speeds. The proposed algorithm has been implemented for the 3[kW] cage-type induction generator system at laboratory, of which results verified the effectiveness of the algorithm.

  • This paper analyzes the steady-state operating characteristics of doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG) and fixed-speed induction generator(FSIG) in wind turbine system. It also presents a modeling and simulation of a grid-connected wind turbine generation system for dynamics analysis on MATLAB/Simulink, and compares the responses between DFIG and FSIG wind turbine systems with respect to wind speed variation, 3-phase fault and 1-phase ground fault of the network. Simulation results show the variations of generator's active/reactive output, rotor speed, terminal voltage, fault current, etc. Case studies demonstrate that DFIG illustrates better performance compared to FSIG.
