Recently, for the purposes of reducing carbon dioxide(CO2) emissions in the island area, countermeasures to decrease the operation rate of diesel generator(DG) and to increase one of renewable energy sources(RES) is being studied. In particular, the demonstration and installation of stand-alone micro-grid(MG) system which is composed of DG, RES and energy storage system(ESS) has been implemented in some island areas such as Gapa-do, Gasa-do and Ulleung-do island. However, many power quality(PQ) problems may be occurred due to an intermittent output of RES including photovoltaic(PV) system and wind power(WP) system in a normal operating of constant voltage & constant frequency(CVCF) inverter-based MG system. Therefore, this paper presents a modeling of the 30kW scale MG system using PSCAD/EMTDC, and also implements a 30kW scale CVCF inverter-based MG system as test devices to analyze normal operating characteristics of MG system. From the simulation and test results, it is confirmed that the proposed methods are useful and practical tools to improve PQ problems such as under-voltage, over-voltage and unbalanced load in CVCF inverter-based MG system.

In the case of power generation using renewable energy, power production may not be smooth due to the influence of the weather. The energy storage system (ESS) is used to increase the efficiency of solar and wind power generation. ESS has been continuously fired due to a lack of battery protection systems, operation management, and control system, or careless installation, leading to very big casualties and economic losses. ESS stability and battery protection system operation management technology is indispensable. In this paper, we present a battery level calculation algorithm and a failure prediction algorithm for ESS optimization and stable operation. The proposed algorithm calculates the correct battery level by accumulating the current amount in real-time when the battery is charged and discharged, and calculates the battery failure by using the voltage imbalance between battery cells. The proposed algorithms can predict the exact battery level and failure required to operate the ESS optimally. Therefore, accurate status information on ESS battery can be measured and reliably monitored to prevent large accidents.

Dispersed generation (DG) such as wind power (WP) and Photovoltaic systems (PV) that has been promoted at the national level recently is mainly being introduced into distribution systems adjacent to consumers because it is generation on a small scale when compared to current generation. Due to its characteristics, DG can be operated by interconnection with distribution systems to present security of more stable power and efficient use of power facilities and resources. Problems on protection coordination of distribution systems by reverse flow of DG can roughly be divided into three possibilities: excess in rated breaking capacity (12.5KA) of protective devices by a fault in DG current supply, failure to operate protective devices by an apparent effect that can occur by reduction in impedance parallel circuit fault current due to interconnection of DG, and malfunction of protective devices by interconnection transformer connection type. The purpose of this study is to analyze problems in protection coordination that can occur when DG is operated by interconnection with distribution systems by conducting modeling and simulations by using theoretical symmetrical components and MATLAB/SIMULINK to present methods to improve such problems.

The present work develops a method of evaluating thrust deduction and wake for different loads of the propeller using the concerted application of the theoretical tools and experimental techniques. It also shows the applicability of the new method to the design of optimum hull form. Firstly, the problem of hull-propeller interaction was analyzed in terms of inviscid as well as viscous components of the thrust deduction and wake. The wavemaking resistance of a hull and propeller were mathematically represented by sources on the hull surface and sink on the propeller plane, respectively. The strength of sink was determined by utilizing the radial distributions of propeller load and nominal wake. The resistance increment due to a propeller and the axial perturbation flow induced by the hull in the propeller plane were calculated. Especially, the inviscid component of the thrust deduction was calculated by subtraction the wavemaking resistance of a bare hull, the wavemaking resistance of a free-running propeller and the augmentation of propeller resistance due to hull action from the wavemaking resistance of the hull with a propeller. The viscous components of the thrust deduction and wake were estimated as functions of propeller load which were established by the propeller load varying test after deduction the calculated inviscid components. Secondly, an analysis method of powering performance was developed based on the potential theory and the propeller load varying test. The hybrid method estimates the thrust deduction, wake and propeller open-water efficiency for different propeller load. This method can be utilized in the analysis of powering performance for the propeller load variation such as the added resistance due to hull surface roughness, the added resistance due to wind, etc. Finally, the hybrid method was applied to the optimum design of hull form. A series of afterbody shapes was obtained by systematically varying the waterplane and section shapes of a parent afterbody without changing the principal dimensions, block coefficient and prismatic coefficient. From the comparison of the predicted results such as wavemaking resistance, thrust deduction, wake and delivered power, an optimum hull form was obtained. The delivered power of the optimized hull form was reduced by 5.7% which was confirmed by model tests. Also the predicted delivered power by the hybrid method shows fairly good agreement with the test result. It is therefore considered that the new analysis method of powering performance can be utilized as a practical tool for the design of optimum hull form as for the analysis of powering performance for the propeller load variation in the preliminary design stage.

Human-powered self-generating devices have been attractive with its operation characteristic independent from outer environment such as weather condition and wind speed. However, conventional self-generators have low electric power output due to their weakly-coupled electromagnetic structure. More importantly, rotary crank motion which is usually adopted by conventional self-generator to generate electricity requires specific skeletal muscles to maintain large torque circular motion and consequently, causes fatigue on those muscles before it can generate enough amount of electricity for any practical application. Without improvement in electric power output and usability, the human-powered self-generator could not be used in everyday life. This study aims to develop a human-powered self-generator which realized a strong electromagnetic coupling in a closed-loop tubular structure (hula-hoop shape) for easy and steady long-term driving as well as larger electric output. The performance and usability of the developed human-powered generator is verified through experimental comparison with a commercial one. Additionally, human workload which is a key element of a human-powered generator but not often considered elsewhere, is estimated based on metabolic energy expenditure measured respiratory gas analyzer. Further study will focus on output and portability enhancement, which can contribute to the continuous power supply of mobile equipments.

Marine accidents caused by dragging anchors occur constantly due to enlargement of ships' size and unusual weather conditions. Nevertheless, vessel operators rely on their experience because the calculations of actual holding power and external forces are complex and inconvenient. The purpose of this study was to propose a program for the anchor dragging risk assessment in order to provide crew and VTSO with the information to determine easily the danger of dragging and take appropriate action. The input data in this program were composed of the ship's basic particulars, anchoring condition, and external environment etc. on calculating for the wind pressure, frictional force, drift force, and holding power. Three dragging anchor accidents were applied to the program's data input at the time of the day, then the result was assessed by 'warning', which was verified with a high confidence. As a result, the risk of dragging anchors can be predicted in advance through this program. In further studies, it is necessary to simplify the input data and improve user convenience through automatic input from various equipment.

The effect of recirculated exhaust gas on performance and exhaust emissions with FGR rate are investigated by using a natural circulation, pressurized draft and water tube boiler with FGR system operating at several boiler loads and over fire air damper openings. The purpose of this study is to apply the FGR system to a power plant boiler for reducing $NO_x$ emissions. To activate the combustion, the OFA with 0 to 20% is supplied into the flame. When the suction damper of two stage combustion system installed in the upper side of wind box is opened by handling the lever between $0^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$, also, the combustion air supplied to burner is changed. It is found that the fuel consumption rate per evaporation rate did not show an obvious tendency to increase or decrease with rising the FGR rate, and $NO_x$ emissions at the same OFA damper opening are decreased, as FGR rates are elevated and boiler loads are dropped. While a trace amount of soot is emitted without regard to the operation conditions of boiler load, OFA damper opening and FGR rate, because soot emissions are eliminated by the electrostatic precipitator with a collecting efficiency of 86.7%.

To optimize the shape of the electrostatic precipitator for the removal of particulate matter in subway environments, the wind-tunnel experiments were carried out to characterize collection efficiency and ozone emission rate. As a standardized parameter, power consumption divided by the square of flow velocity, was increased, the $PM_{10}$ collection efficiency increased. If the standardized parameter is higher than 1.0 due to high power consumption or low flow velocity, increase in thickness of electrodes from 1 to 2 mm, or increase in distance of collection plates from 5 to 10 cm did not change the $PM_{10}$ collection efficiency much. Increase in thickness of high-voltage electrodes, however, can cause decrease in $PM_{10}$ collection efficiency by 28% for low power consumption and high flow velocity. The ozone emission rate decreased as distance of collection plates became wider, because the ozone emission rate per unit channel was constant, and the number of collection channels decreased as the distance of collection plates increased. When the distance of collection plates was narrow, the ozone emission rate increased with the increase of the thickness of electrodes, but the difference was negligible when the distance of collection plates was wide. It was found that the electrostatic precipitator having a thin high-voltage electrodes and a narrow distance of collection plates is advantageous. However, to increase the thickness of high-voltage electrodes, or to increase the distance of collection plates is needed, it is necessary to increase the applied voltage or reduce the flow rate to compensate reduction of the collection efficiency.

Background: Government conducts environmental radioactivity surveillance for verification purpose around nuclear facilities based on the Nuclear Safety Law and issues a surveillance report every year. This study aims to evaluate the short and the long-term fluctuation of radionuclides detected above MDC and their origins using concentration ratios between these radionuclides. Materials and Methods: Sample media for verification surveillance are air, rainwater, groundwater, soil, and milk for terrestrial samples, and seawater, marine sediment, fish, and seaweed for marine samples. Gamma-emitting radionuclides including $^{137}Cs$, $^{90}Sr$, Pu, $^3H$, and $^{14}C$ are evaluated in these samples. Results and Discussion: According to the result of the environmental radioactivity verification surveillance in the vicinity of nuclear power facilities in 2017, the anthropogenic radionuclides were not detected in most of the environmental samples except for the detection of a trace level of $^{137}Cs$, $^{90}Sr$, Pu, and $^{131}I$ in some samples. Radioactivity concentration ratios between the anthropogenic radionuclides ($^{137}Cs/^{90}Sr$, $^{137}Cs/^{239+240}Pu$, $^{90}Sr/^{239+240}Pu$) were similar to those reported in the environmental samples, which were affected by the global fallout of the past nuclear weapon test, and Pu atomic ratios ($^{240}Pu/^{239}Pu$) in the terrestrial sample and marine sample showed significant differences due to the different input pathway and the Pu source. Radioactive iodine ($^{131}I$) was detected at the range of < $5.6-190mBq{\cdot}kg-fresh^{-1}$ in the gulfweed and sea trumpet collected from the area of Kori and Wolsong intake and discharge. A high level of $^3H$ was observed in the air (Sangbong: $0.688{\pm}0.841Bq{\cdot}m^{-3}$) and the precipitation (Meteorology Post: $199{\pm}126Bq{\cdot}L^{-1}$) samples of the Wolsong nuclear power plant (NPP). $^3H$ concentration in the precipitation and pine needle samples showed typical variation pattern with the distance and the wind direction from the stack due to the gaseous release of $^3H$ in Wolsong NPP. Conclusion: Except for the detection of a trace level of $^{137}Cs$, $^{90}Sr$, Pu, and $^{131}I$ in some samples, anthropogenic radionuclides were below MDC in most of the environmental samples. Overall, no unusual radionuclides and abnormal concentration were detected in the 2017's surveillance result for verification. This research will be available in the assessment of environment around nuclear facilities in the event of radioactive material release.

This paper is to develop an electromagnetic wave-based sensor that can measure the spatial distribution of precipitation, and to a electromagnetic wave rain gauge (hereinafter, "EWRG") capable of simultaneously measuring rainfall, snowfall, and wind field, which are the core of heavy rain observation. Through this study, the LFM transmission and reception signals were theoretically analyzed. In addition, In order to develop a radar transceiver, LFM transceiver design and simulation were conducted. In this paper, we developed a K-BAND pulse-driven 6W SSPA(Solid State Power Amplifiers) transceiver using a small HMIC(Hybrid Microwave Integrated Circuit). It has more than 6W of output power and less than 5dB of receiving NF(Noise Figure) with short duty of 1% in high temperature environment of 65 degrees. The manufactured module emits LFM and Square Pulse waveform with the built-in waveform generator, and the receiver has more than 40dB of gain. The transceiver developed in this paper can be applied to the other small weather radar.
