This study aims to present the applicability of wind turbine generator system to urban buildings for the utilization of clean renewable energy. The results are as follows; According to the wind resource analysis, it has been found that small sized wind power system can be viable for buildings application due to the amplification of wind velocity around buildings or building clusters, in spite of low mean velocity of 2-3m/s in Seoul and Kyunggi urban areas. But planners must perform micrositing analysis around building so that wind turbine can be located at high velocity zones. The system must be designed to avoid obstacles preventing prevailing wind in buildings. It should be recognized that wind speeds are changing depending on the height and length from buildings. The wind power system can be used as a symbol of landmark which shows a sustainable architecture from the scenary Itself A case study for apartment building in urban showed that wind power systems can be applicable in two kinds of place, rooftops and ground levels. Especially, the wind power systems must be carefully positioned so that wind resources do not decrease when it is installed at ground levels. and according to life cycle cost analysis, adaption of new small win4 power systems to buildings were proved to produce a profit if it is considered the expense of environment improvement and the wind speed increasing according to rise of building height. This research will ultimately achieve green architecture that preserves nature and at the same time provides pleasant environment to humans, and will play a great role in establishing the environment-preserving sustainable architecture of the 21th century.
The spatial characteristics of typhoon-class strong wind during the non-typhoon period were analyzed using, a cluster analysis of the observational data and of special strong wind advisories and, warnings issued by the Korean Meteorological Administration. On the Korean Peninsula, strong winds during non-typhoon periods showed a wide variety of spatial characteristics. In particular, the cluster analysis showed that strong winds could be classified into six clusters on the Korean Peninsula, and that the spatial distribution, occurrence rate of strong winds, and strong wind speed in each cluster were complex and diverse. In addition, our analysis of the frequency of issuance of special strong wind warnings showed a significant difference in the average frequency of strong wind warnings issued in metropolitan cities, with relatively high numbers of warnings issued in Gyeongsangbuk-do and, Jeollanam-do, and low numbers of warning issued inland and in other metropolitan cities. As a result of the changing trend in warnings issued from 2004 to 2019, Ulsan and Busan can be interpreted as having a relatively high number of warnings; the frequency of strong wind warnings issuances and strong wind occurrences in these cities is increasing rapidly. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to identify areas with similar strong wind characteristics and consider specific regional standards in terms of disaster prevention.
Effects of buildings and topography on observation environment of surface wind in central regions of urban areas are investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. In order to reflect the characteristics of buildings and topography in urban areas, geographic information system (GIS) data are used to construct surface boundary input data. For each observation station, 16 cases with different inflow directions are considered to evaluate effects of buildings and topography on wind speed and direction around the observation station. The results show that flow patterns are very complicated due to the buildings and topography. The simulated wind speed and direction at the location of each observation station are compared with those of inflow. As a whole, wind speed at observation stations decreases due to the drag effect of buildings. The decrease rate of wind speed is strongly related with total volume of buildings which are located in the upwind direction. It is concluded that the CFD model is a very useful tool to evaluate location of observation station suitability. And it is expected to help produce wind observation data that represent local scale excluding the effects of buildings and topography in urban areas.
Elements of atmospheric environment, temperature, humidity and wind, at the compus of KNU(Kyungpook National University) were investigated by the observations. The observed data were compared with those of DWS (Daegu Weather Station). The simulations of wind field and dispersions of polluted gases were conducted by MUKLIMO under the various conditions. The results show that the atmospheric environment of KNU are suitable but the campus does not play role as a heat sink in the city. The simulations of wind field show the air flows and wind channels in the campus clearly. The exhausted gases by motor vehicles on the northside street of campus affect very much to the campus with $NW(300^{\circ})$ wind. The running cars in the campus are also pollute much on the campus with the various wind directions. The characteristics of environmental conditions, various meteorological fields, wind channels, and dispersion of exhausted gases at the campus of KNU were understood quantitatively in the study.
The energy produced by wind power generation is a clean energy product because it is acquired by using renewable resource. Wind power plants("wind farms), in Korea, have been built and operated as 345.6MW facilities from 2001 until now 2009. Nevertheless, environmental issues regarding construction of wind power plants have arisen. accordingly it is time to consider the environmental and social issues of wind power in accordance with the government's policy objectives of increased wind power production. In this study, we investigated the influence that noise and low frequency noise caused by Wind power plants have on neighborhood and residents. We also sought solutions to these issues. In order to analyze the issues of wind power facilities, we compared and examined precedents and the solutions for noise and low frequency noise in Europe, the United states and Japan. We intended to examine the influences of wind power facilities and propose alternative in dealing with these issues.
Wind energy has been recognized as one of the most important and fastest growing energy resources without emission of air pollutant. Thus, it is necessary to predict wind speed and direction accurately both in time and space toward the efficient usage of wind energy. Numerical simulation experiments using the Fifth-Generation Mesoscale Model (MM5) are carried out to clarify the impact of surface observation data assimilation on the estimation of wind energy resources. The EXP_Radius run was designed with respect to the radius of influence in the Four-Dimensional Data Assimilation (FDDA), and the EXP_Impact run was made by changing the nudging coefficient that determines the relative magnitude of the nudging term. The simulation period covers a clear-sky event on 3 - 5 June 2007 and another is on 2 - 4 December 2006. It is found that the simulated results are very sensitive to the radius of influence and nudging parameters in the FDDA. The further analysis of the results shows that the impact of the radius of influence tends to be stronger in weak synoptic flow episode than that in strong synoptic flows episode. The nudging factor is also sensitive to the intensity of the synoptic flows.
This study investigates the impact of enhanced regional meteorological fields on improvement of wind energy forecasting accuracy in the southwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula. To clarify the effect of detailed surface boundary data and application of analysis nudging technique on simulated meteorological fields, several WRF simulations were carried out. Case_LT, which is a simulation with high resolution terrain height and land use data, shows the most remarkable accuracy improvement along the shoreline mainly due to modified surface characteristics such as albedo, roughness length and thermal inertia. Case_RS with high resolution SST data shows accurate SST distributions compared to observation data, and they led to change in land and sea breeze circulation. Case_GN, grid nudging applied simulation, also shows changed temperature and wind fields. Especially, the application of grid nudging dominantly influences on the change of horizontal wind components in comparison with vertical wind component.
Fine particles ($PM_{2.5}$) were collected and analyzed from December 2005 through December 2009 in Chuncheon, Korea to investigate the long-term trend of $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations. Also $PM_{10}$ concentrations were collected from Environmental Monitoring System operated by Ministry of Environment. Average concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{10}$ were 30.5 and 58.2 ${\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. Both $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{10}$ were significantly affected by meteorological factors including wind speed, wind direction and precipitation. They generally decreased as wind speed increased (p=0.000), and increased when there was a prevailing westerly wind. Low concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ were observed during rainy days while high concentrations were shown when fog, mist and/or haze occurred.

In this paper, the method of introducing additional source/sink terms in the turbulence and momentum transport equations was applied to appropriately model the effect of the tree canopy. At first, the new additional source term for the turbulence frequency ${\omega}$ equation in the SST k-${\omega}$ model was proposed through theoretical analogy. Then the new source/sink term model for the SST k-${\omega}$ model was numerically verified. At last, the proposed source term model was adopted in the wind environment optimal design of the twin high-rise buildings of CABR (China Academy of Building Research). Based on the numerical simulations, the technical measure to ameliorate the wind environment was proposed. Using the new inflow boundary conditions developed in the previous studies, it was concluded that the theoretically reasonable source term model of the SST k-${\omega}$ model was applicable for modeling the tree canopy flow and accurate numerical results are obtained.
This study aims to produce fundamental database for Environment Impact Assessment by monitoring vertical structure of the atmosphere due to the mountain valley wind in spring season. For this, we observed surface and upper meteorological elements in Sangin-dong, Daegu using the rawinsonde and automatic weather system(AWS). In Sangin-dong, the weather condition was largely affected by mountains when compared to city center. The air temperature was low during the night time and day break, and similar to that of city center during the day time. Relative humidity also showed similar trend; high during the night time and day break and similar to that of city center during the day time. Solar radiation was higher than the city, and the daily maximum temperature was observed later than the city. The synoptic wind during the measurement period was west wind. But during the day time, the west wind was joined by the prevailing wind to become stronger than the night time. During the night time and daybreak, the impact of mountain wind lowered the overall temperature, showing strong geographical influence. The vertical structure of the atmosphere in Dalbi valley, Sangin-dong had a sharp change in air temperature, relative humidity, potential temperature and equivalent potential temperature when measured at the upper part of the mixing layer height. The mixing depth was formed at maximum 1896m above the ground, and in the night time, the inversion layer was formed by radiational cooling and cold mountain wind.
