Basic Study on the Performance of a Pressure-difference Control Damper Affected by Flow Disturbance in a Wind Tunnel (풍도 내 유동 교란과 자동차압 댐퍼의 성능 특성 기초 연구)

  • The performance characteristics of a smoke damper, which aims to suppress the penetration of smoke to a safe area, have been tested under the regulation of the FIS 001. However, the improvement of the test methods and the regulation has consecutively been requested. From a view-point of fluid mechanical theory, a pressure control damper, that is installed at the end of the flow control system, is important and it dominates flow characteristics in all designed flow systems. In this study, the weak points of the regulation of the FIS 001 concerned with the pressure control damper was visited and the some important characteristics of the damper was examined. Based on these results, it was confirmed that the effects of flow disturbance in the air supplying duct on the performance of the damper are not significant. This results gives some information for the modification of the experimental regulation concerned to the pressure control damper.

  • A Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) model is proposed to eliminate the short-term voltage disturbances that occur in the grid-connected mode, the switching between grid-connected mode and the stand-alone mode of a Microgrid. The proposed DVR structure is based on a conventional cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (MLI) topology; a novel composite control strategy is presented, which could ensure the compensation ability of voltage sag by the DVR. Moreover, the compensation to specified order of harmonic is added to implement effects that zero-steady error compensation to harmonic voltage in specified order of the presented control strategy; utilizing wind turbines-batteries units as DC energy storage components in the Microgrid, the operation cost of the DVR is reduced. When the Microgrid operates under stand-alone mode, the DVR can operate on microsource mode, which could ease the power supply from the main grid (distribution network) and consequently be favorable for energy saving and emission reduction. Simulation results validate the robustness and effective of the proposed DVR system.

Simultaneous Control of Frequency Fluctuation and Battery SOC in a Smart Grid using LFC and EV Controllers based on Optimal MIMO-MPC

  • This paper proposes a simultaneous control of frequency deviation and electric vehicles (EVs) battery state of charge (SOC) using load frequency control (LFC) and EV controllers. In order to provide both frequency stabilization and SOC schedule near optimal performance within the whole operating regions, a multiple-input multiple-output model predictive control (MIMO-MPC) is employed for the coordination of LFC and EV controllers. The MIMO-MPC is an effective model-based prediction which calculates future control signals by an optimization of quadratic programming based on the plant model, past manipulate, measured disturbance, and control signals. By optimizing the input and output weights of the MIMO-MPC using particle swarm optimization (PSO), the optimal MIMO-MPC for simultaneous control of the LFC and EVs, is able to stabilize the frequency fluctuation and maintain the desired battery SOC at the certain time, effectively. Simulation study in a two-area interconnected power system with wind farms shows the effectiveness of the proposed MIMO-MPC over the proportional integral (PI) controller and the decentralized vehicle to grid control (DVC) controller.

  • In this paper the longitudinal control problem for the large WIG(wing-in-ground effect) craft is considered in the sense of the control augmentation system(CAS) derived by control surface of elevator. In order to achieve longitudinally stable systems, two modes of CAS are applied to the control systems which are pitch rate hold mode and pitch hold mode for steady flight. Since the employed CASs include the dynamic properties of the actuator time delay and the low pass filter, it provides the possible solution to be applicable to real systems. Nonlinear model simulations are fulfilled to investigate the effectiveness of the applied CASs with wind disturbance.

  • In this paper, we develop anti-sway control in proposed techniques for an ATC system. The developed algorithm is to build the optimal path of container motion and to calculate an anti-collision path for collision avoidance in its movement to the finial coordinate. Moreover, in order to show the effectiveness in this research, we compared NNP PID controller to be tuning parameters of controller using NN with 2 DOF PID controller. The experimental results for an ATC simulator show that the proposed control scheme guarantees performances, trolley position, sway angle, and settling time in NNP PID controller than other controller. As a result, the application of NNP PID controller is analyzed to have robustness about disturbance which is wind of fixed pattern in the yard. Accordingly, the proposed algorithm in this study can be readily used for industrial applications

  • The longitudinal stability characteristics of a Wing-In-Ground Effect Craft are quite different from that of the conventional airplane due to the existence of force and moment derivatives with regard to height. This stability characteristics plays a great role in designing a safe and efficient WIG due to its potential danger in sea surface proximity. The static and dynamic stability criteria are derived from the motion equations of WIG in the framework of small disturbance theory and discussed in the paper. The static and dynamic stability analyses of a 20-passenger WIG are conducted based on the wind tunnel test data and the dynamic motion behaviors are investigated for the change of the design parameters. Finally, the flying quality of the 20-passenger WIG is analysed at the cruising condition according to the military regulations.

An Effective Adaptive Autopilot for Ships

  • Ship motion is a complex controlled process with several hydrodynamic parameters that vary in wide ranges with respect to ship load condition, speed and surrounding conditions (such as wind, current, tide, etc.). Therefore, to effectively control ships in a designed track is always an important task for ship masters. This paper presents an effective adaptive autopilot ships that ensure the optimal accuracy, economy and stability characteristics. The PID control methodology is modified and parameters of a PID controller is designed to satisfy conditions for an optimal objective function that comprised by heading error, resistance and drift during changing course, and loss of surge velocity or fuel consumption. Designing of the controller for course changing process is based on the Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) control theory, while as designing of the automatic course keeping process is based on the Self Tuning Regulator (STR) control theory. Simulation (using MATLAB software) in various disturbance conditions shows that in comparison with conventional PID autopilots, the designed autopilot has several notable advantages: higher course turning speed, lower swing of ship bow even in strong waves and winds, high accuracy of course keeping, shorter time of rudder actions smaller times of changing rudder direction.

  • Closed-loop active twist control of integral helicopter rotor blades is investigated in this paper for reducing hub vibration induced in forward flight. A four-bladed fully articulated integral twist-actuated rotor system has been designed and tested successfully in wind tunnel in open-loop actuation. The integral twist deformation of the blades is generated using active fiber composite actuators embedded in the composite blade construction. An analytical framework is developed to examine integrally twisted helicopter blades and their aeroelastic behavior during different flight conditions. This aeroelastic model stems from a three-dimensional electroelastic beam formulation with geometrical-exactness, and is coupled with finite-state dynamic inflow aerodynamics. A system identification methodology that assumes a linear periodic system is adopted to estimate the harmonic transfer function of the rotor system. A vibration minimizing controller is designed based on this result, which implements a classical disturbance rejection algorithm with some modifications. Using the established analytical framework, the closed-loop controller is numerically simulated and the hub vibratory load reduction capability is demonstrated.

  • A matched asymptotic analysis is conducted for a compressible rotating flow in a cylindrical container when a mechanical and/or a thermal disturbance is imposed on the wall. The system Ekman number is assumed to be very small. The conditions for the Taylor-Proudman column in the interior, which were also given in the companion paper Park & Hyun, 2002) by means of the energy balancing analysis, have been re-derived. The concept of the variable, the energy content $e[{\equiv}T+2 {\alpha}^2 {\gamma}{\nu}]$, is reformulated, and its effectiveness in characterizing the energy transport mechanism is delineated. It is seen that, under the condition of the Taylor-Proudman column, numerous admissible theoretical solutions for interior flow exist with an associated wail boundary condition. Some canonical examples are illustrated with comprehensive physical descriptions. The differential heating problem on the top and bottom endwall disks is revisited by using the concept of the energy content. The results are shown to be in line with the previous findings.
