This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of management practices on the qualify of round baled grass silage at experimental field of grassland and Forage Crops division, National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon from 1997 to 1998. The experiment was consisted of three different wilting days : 0 (unwitted), 0.5 and 1 day with three replications. Crude fiber content was increased with prolonged wilting period, but other components did not show any trends. There was no significant differences in acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content between wilting periods, but there was significant difference in IVDMD (in vitro dry matter digestibility) between one-day wilted and unwitted silage. Dry matter (DM) content changed from 23.7% to 40.5% in relation to prolonged wilting period. Wilting treatment caused a decrease in each organic acid content of round baled grass silage and an increase in the silage quality. Wilting also could reduce the DM loss. This study demonstrated that one-day wilting would be a recommendable method for making high quality round baled grass silage.
In order to investigate the cause of wilting symptoms in red pepper field of Korea, the frequency of occurrence of red peppers showing wilting symptoms was investigated in pepper cultivation fields in Goesan, Chungcheongbuk-do for 5 years from 2010 to 2014. There was a difference in the frequency of wilting symptoms depending on the year of investigation, but the frequency of occurrence increased as the investigation period passed from June and July to August. During this period, Ralstonia solanacearum causing the bacterial wilt was isolated at a rate four times higher than Phytophthora capsica causing the Phytophthora late blight. In wilted peppers collected in Goesan of Chungbuk and Andong of Gyeongbuk in 2013 and 2014, R. solanacearum and P. capsici were isolated from 20.3% and 3.8% of the total fields, respectively. In the year with a high rate of wilting symptoms, the average temperature was high, and the disease occurrence date of the bacterial wilt, estimated with disease forecasting model, was also fast. The inconsistency between the number of days at risk of Phytophthora late blight and the frequency of occurrence of wither symptoms is thought to be due to the generalization of the use of cultivars resistant to the Phytophthora late blight in the pepper field. In our study, the wilting symptoms were caused by the bacterial wilt caused by R. solanacearum rather than the Phytophthora late blight caused by P. capsica, which is possibly caused by increasing cultivation of pepper varieties resistant to the Phytophthora late blight in the field.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of propionic acid and wilting on fermentation quality of Italian ryegrass silage. Grass material was wilted for a day before ensiling and propionic acid(0. 0, 0. 2. 0. 5 and 0.8 7~ of fresh matter) was applicated at ensiling time. Chemical composition, fermentation acids, pH, microbial population and distribution of the nitrogen contents were evaluated. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The contents of dry matter and water soluble carbohydrate in the silage were increased by wilting, and crude fibre, NDF and ADF were decreased with increasing propionic acid levels. 2. The pH values of the silage increased by increasing DM content, but decreased with increasing propionic acid levels. Lactic acid content lowed in wilted silage, and acetic acid and butyric acid formation were decreased with increasing propionic acid levels. 3. Total nitrogen content in the silage was i n ~ r e a s e d ( ~ < . 05) by addition of propionic acid and wilting, and was the highest in the prewilting-0.8 Q propionic acid applicated silage. The production of NHBN was decreased with propionic acid and was the lowest in the 0.8 % treated silage. 4. The number of total bacteria and yeasts were estimated $10^6~10^7$, $10^2~10^3$ respectively. Moulds number were decreased with increasing propionic acid levels.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the quality of Aralia elata shoots according to different packaging methods during storage at 2℃. The highest level of dehydration and wilting incidences were observed in polypropylene containers with polyvinyl chloride wrap (PP+PVC), and these levels continually increased during the entire storage period, compared to other packaging methods. The overall marketability of A. elata shoot packaged in polyethylene terephthalate container (PET) and PP with the mineral-coted functional warp (PP+F) constantly declined during storage with a similar level of 38.6 and 36.0% at 15 days in storage, respectively. PP with PET cover packaging (PP+PET) showed the lowest decay and wilting rates during the entire storage, and the wilting score at 10th day was 51.9, 58.0, 51.8% suppressed, as compared to PET, PP+PVC, and PP+F, respectively. Consequently PP+PET packaging effectively decreased the deterioration of A. elata and maintained marketability for 10 days of storage at 2℃.
The results of the investigation on the effects of plant nutrio-physiological status and reemergence of sudden wilting in rice on the occurrence of sudden wilting were summarized as follows: 1. The occurrence of sudden wilting, degree of damage and occurring time in the investigated variety showed to concur with the results of the previous experiment. 2. Nitrogen and Potassium contents in leaves related an occurrence of sudden wilting at heading stage have a very high negative co-relation (the value is -0.9224 at Yushin and -0.8243 at Milyang 23). 3. Regarding the relation between occurrence of sudden wilting and root activity capacity at the late growth stage, the root activity capacity at productive growth stage showed higher than at reproductive growth stage, which is the same in the two varieties but Milyang 23 is higher than Yushin. It is confirmed that root activity capacity in the two varieties has become very low at reproductive growth stage. 4. The toot activity capacity in the field with potassium showed a small occurrence of sudden wilting and the root activity capacity in the field with no potassium showed a very high co-relation value (the value is 0.8947 at Yushin and 0.7301 at Milyang 23). 5. Regarding the relation between the occurrence of sudden wilting and water evaporation quantity, water evaporation quantity after the heading date has a more direct relation to sudden wilting than that which occurrs prior to the heading date. Water evaporation quantity is higher in the field with no potassium, low leaves and Yushin, than in the field with potassium high leaves and Milyang 23. 6. The starch content in culm of Yushin and Milyang 23 at ripening stage showed high value in proportion to potassium quantity, and the starch content is lower as internode is lower. However, in fourth internode, the starch content is greatly increased in the field with potassium contrasted to the field with no potassium.

This study was carried out to establish the optimum pre-wilting time for the high-quality silage production of whole crop oat. Plants were harvested for three time at intervals of 10 days after heading (DAH) and silage production was conducted after the pre-wilting treatment of 0, 4, 8 and 32 hours, respectively. Results showed to attain a proper moisture content for profitable silage production, which was an optimal content for making silage, by pre-wilting oat for 4 hours after harvest at either 20 days after heading or harvesting 30 DAH(days after heading). As the feed value of silage, the processing of proper moisture contents showed that crude protein contents were high and the entire feed value showed higher than others. High content of lactic acid and the low content of acetic and butyric acid showed on 60~65% the moisture conditions of silage. There was desired that whole crop oat was pre-wilting on 4 hours and harvested at about 20~30 DAH and after that, even if harvesting at once, it was judged that it could produce good quality silage.

Three experiments were carried out to determine the effect of harvest maturity and management practices on the dry matter losses and morphological changes of round baled rye silage. Rye was harvested at three growing stages (boot, heading and flowering stage) in three different conditions i) with wilting (unwilted, short wilting and long wilting), ii) with inoculant treatment (untreated, inoculant A and inoculant B) and iii) with three different wrap colors (white, black and green). The morphological changes in round bale silage after 2 months was heavy in the early harvest and unwilted silage. However, harvesting after the heading stage did not change the shape, significantly. Inoculant treatment reduced the morphological changes and dry matter (DM) losses of round baled rye silage. DM loss was decreased with a delayed harvesting date and was significantly reduced by the inoculant. Dramatic changes in the shape were observed in all treatment at boot stage. Inoculant treatment resulted in more severe changes in the boot stage compared to untreated silage. Black color wrapping had the greatest impact among the wrap colors and there were no significant difference in the wrap colors. Harvest maturity and wilting periods was highly correlated (p<0.01) with morphological change. Result of these studies indicated that dry matter content is the most important factor that affects the morphological change in round bale silage.
To identify the physiological phenomena on the sudden wilting of japonica/indica crossed varieties, Pot experiment was carried out under the heavy N application with various levels of potassium in Japan. The results obtained are as follows. 1. Sudden wilting was occurred in both varieties used, Yushin and Milyang 23. The former showed a higher degree than the latter. 2. Sudden wilting was occurred into two types, one at early ripening stage and the other at late ripening stage. The former type was found in the field with low potassium supply and the latter was seemed to be related to varietal wilting tolerence. 3. By the investigation of concerning the effective tillering rate and the change of dry weight of each organ at the heading stage, it was inferred that the growth status from young panicle formation stage to heading stage were related to sudden wilting tolerence. 4. Manganese content at heading stage, ratio of Fe/Mn and Fe. Fe/Mn in stern at late ripening stage and $K_2$ O/N ratio of stem at harvesting stage were recognized as the specific factors in connection with sudden wilting. Mn content in the sudden wilting rice plant was already in creased remarkably at heading stage. In relation to root age and absoption characteristics of Mn, the senility of root before heading stage was inferred as the cause of increase the value of Fe/Mn or Fe. Fe/Mn. 5. The $K_2$ O/N ratio of culm at harvesting stage was lower in upper node than lower node in relation to sudden wilting. And it was well accordance with the fact that the symptoms of sudden wilting proceeded from upper leaf to lower leaf. These phenomenon was different from the usual one that the effect of potassium deficiency was more remarkable in lower node than upper node. 6. All varieties which have a condition of potassium deficiency have a high degree of nitrogen content of leaves at heading stage and the $K_2$ O/N ratio of each organ was low, Especialy, $K_2$ O/N ratio is much lower in sheath and culm than leaves.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of paclobutrazol [(2 RS , 3 RS )1-(4- chlor-ophenyl )-4, 4- dimethyl -2- (1, 2, 4- triazol -1- yl )- pentan -3-01] on the tolerance of hi-gh temperature and drought stress as related to growth retardation , iranspiration rate , soil water content , nitrogen level and photosynthetic rate in perennial ryegrass ( Loliurn perenne L . ' Omega H , ). Plants were given a 30 ml soil drench of paclohutrazol at the concentrations of 0, 0.01, 0.1, 1.0, 10.. 0, mg / 6 .5cm- diameter pot . The rcsults were as follows : 1. Increasing concentrations of paclohutrazul reduced plant height , leaf area , fresh weight and dry weight , hut increased chlorophyll content per unit area . The number of tillers and leaf width were not affected hy the paclobutrazol concentrations . 2. The proper concentration of paclohatrazol on growth retardation in perennial ryegrass was about I mq /pot , hut leaf deformity and severe growth retardation were shown at high concentration of 10 mq / pot . 3. Perennial ryegrasses grown at 30˚C were shown significantly short plant height and low leaf nitrogen level compared with those grown at 20˚C. Increasing concentrations of paclohutrazol at 20˚C increased nitrogen level hut it could not increase nitrogen level at 30˚C . 4. During the drought stress , increasing temperatures significantly promoted transpiration rate and wilting time . It took about 5 days at 20˚C and 3 days at 30˚C to reach wilting time of leaves from water stress treatment . Soil water contents at wilting time of non-treated controls were averaged 6. 871% at 20˚C and 6. 17% at 30˚C 5. Paclohutrazol reduced transpiration rate at high temperature and drought stress . Wilting appeared at the lower water content of soil according to increasing concentrations of paclobutrazol at 30˚C hut there were no differences among concentrations of at 20˚C. 6.Paclohutrazol treatment at 1 rag /pot reduced injury rate of leaves from 67.1 % and 100 % in control plants to 15.7% and 80% at 20˚C and 3010, respectively. 7. Photosynthetic rate per unit area was significantly reduced at high temperature . Paclohutrazol stimulated photosynthetic rate with increase of concentrations at 20˚C but there was no increasing effect at 30˚C.

Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of molasses and Lactobacillus plantarum on the ensiling quality and in vitro rumen fermentation of sudangrass silage prepared with or without wilting. Methods: The ensiling experiment, measured with 3 replicates, was carried out according to a 2×4 (wilted stages×additives) factorial treatment structure. Dry matter of the fresh (210 g/kg fresh matter) or wilted (305 g/kg fresh matter) sudangrass were ensiled (packed into 5.0-L plastic jars) without additive (control) or with molasses (M), Lactobacillus plantarum (LP), or molasses + Lactobacillus plantarum (M+LP). After 60 days of ensiling, the silages were analyzed for the chemical, fermentation, and in vitro characteristics. Results: After 60 days of ensiling, the fermentation parameters were affected by wilted, the additives and the interactions of wilted with the additives (p<0.05). The M+LP treatment at wilted had higher lactic acid levels and V-score (p<0.05) but lower pH values and butyric acid concentrations than the other treatments. In comparison with sudangrass before ensiling, after ensiling had lower dry matter and higher non-fibrous carbohydrate. The in vitro gas production, in vitro dry matter digestibility, in vitro crude protein digestibility, and in vitro acid fiber detergent digestibility changed under the effects of the additives. Significant interactions were observed between wilted and the additives in terms of in vitro gas production at 48 h, asymptotic gas production, gas production rate, half time, and the average gas production rate. The total volatile fatty acid levels in the additive treatments were higher than those in the control. Conclusion: Wilting and supplementation with molasses and Lactobacillus plantarum had the ability to improve the ensiling quality and in vitro nutrient digestibility of sudangrass silage. The M+LP treatment at wilted exhibited the strongest positive effects on silage quality and in vitro ruminal fermentation characteristics.
