The paper presents the surface-modified NACA 2412 airfoil performance with variable cavity characteristics such as size, shape and orientation, by numerically investigated with the pre-validation study. The study attempts to improve the airfoil aerodynamic performance at 30 m/s with a variable angle of attack (AOA) ranging from 0° to 20° under Reynolds number (Re) 4.4×105. Through passive surface control techniques, a boundary layer control strategy has been enhanced to improve flow performance. An intense background survey has been carried out over the modifier orientation, shape, and numbers to differentiate the sub-critical and post-critical flow regimes. The wall-bounded flows along with its governing equations are investigated using Reynolds Average Navier Strokes (RANS) solver coupled with one-equational transport Spalart Allmaras model. It was observed that the aerodynamic efficiency of cavity airfoil had been improved by enhancing maximum lift to drag ratio ((l/d) max) with delayed flow separation by keeping the flow attached beyond 0.25C even at a higher angle of attack. Detailed investigation on the cavity distribution pattern reveals that cavity depth and width are essential in degrading the early flow separation characteristics. In this study, overall general performance comparison, all the cavity airfoil models have delayed stalling compared to the original airfoil.
This study, as basic research which was intended to develope the surface reinforcement method using reinforcement material which is applicable to very soft ground in Korea, was aimed at proposing the design parameter for the surface ground improvement method. To that end, a wide width tensile test using geotextile, geogrid and steel bar (substitute for bamboo) and 49 kinds of the laboratory model tests were conducted. And the result the study suggested $\beta_s$, the stiffness coefficient to evaluate the stiffness effect of reinforcement materials. Then, it was also found that the stiffness coefficient, $\beta_s$ as the testing constant would be appropriate as high as 1.0, 1.1 and 1.5 for geotextile, geogrid and steel bar, respectively. And It was evaluated that the stiffness effect affecting reinforcement improvement effect would be reduced as the thickness of embeded depth increases and that RFe, the stiffness effect reduction coefficient would have positive correlation with H/B. Finally, it was confirmed that the bearing capacity gained from the method to calculate bearing capacity, which was suggested in the study, would almost correctly estimate the capacity, demonstrating the appropriateness of the proposed bearing capacity calculation method.
The problem of reducing the self-weight of reinforced concrete structures is very important issue. There are two approaches which may be used to reduced member weight. The first is tackled through reducing the cross sectional area by using voids and the second through using light weight materials. Reducing the weight of slabs is very important as it constitutes the effective portion of dead loads in the structural building. Eleven slab specimens was casted in this research. The slabs are made one way though using two simple supports. The tested specimens comprised three reference solid slabs and eight styropor block slabs having (23% and 29%) reduction in weight. The voids in slabs were made using styropor at the ineffective concrete zones in resisting the tensile stresses. All slab specimens have the dimensions ($1100{\times}600{\times}120mm$) except one solid specimens has depth 85 mm (to give reduction in weight of 29% which is equal to the styropor block slab reduction). Two loading positions or cases (A and B) (as two-line monotonic loads) with shear span to effective depth ratio of (a/d=3, 2) respectively, were used to trace the structural behavior of styropor block slab. The best results are obtained for styropor block slab strengthened by minimum shear reinforcement with weight reduction of (29%). The increase in the strength capacity was (8.6% and 5.7%) compared to the solid slabs under loading cases A and B respectively. Despite the appearance of cracks in styropor block slab with loads lesser than those in the solid slab, the development and width of cracks in styropor block slab is significantly restricted as a result of presence a mesh of reinforcement in upper concrete portion.
Micropump is very useful component in micro/nano fluidics and bioMEMS applications. In this study, a bubble-powered micropump was fabricated and tested. The micropump consists of two-parallel micro line heaters, a pair of nozzle-diffuser flow controller and a 1 mm in diameter, 400 ${\mu}m$ in depth pumping chamber. The two-parallel micro line heaters with 20 ${\mu}m-width$ and 200 ${\mu}m-length$ were fabricated to be embedded in the silicon dioxide layer of a wafer which serves as a base plate for the micropump. The pumping chamber, the pair of nozzle-diffuser unit and microchannels including the liquid inlet and outlet port were fabricated by etching through another silicon wafer. A glass wafer (thickness of $525{\pm}15$${\mu}m$) having two holes of inlet and outlet ports of liquid serve as upper plate of the pump. Finally the silicon wafer of the base plate, the silicon wafer of pumping chamber and the glass wafer were aligned and bonded (Si-Si bonding and anodic bonding). A sequential photograph of bubble nucleation, growth and collapse was visualized by CCD camera. Clearly liquid flow through the nozzle during the period of bubble growth and slight back flow of liquid at the end of collapsing period can be seen. The mass flow rate was found to be dependent on the duty ratio and the operation frequency. As duty ratio increases, flow rate decreases gradually when the duty ratio exceeds 60%. Also as the operation frequency increases, the flow rate of the micropump decreases slightly.
Microfluidic single chip integrating thermopneumatic micropump and micro check valve are developed. The micropump and micorvalve are made of biocompatible materials, glass and PDMS, so as to be applicable to the biochip. By using the passive-type check valve, backward flow and fluid leakage are blocked and flow control is stable and precise. The chip is composed of three PDMS layers and a glass substrate. In the chip, flow channel and pump chamber were made on the PDMS layers by the replica molding technique and pump heater was made on the glass substrate by Cr/Au deposition. Diameter of the pump chamber is 7 mm and the width and depth of the channel are 200 and $180{\mu}m$, respectively. The PDMS layers chip and the heater deposited glass chip are combined by a jig and a clamp for pumping operation, and they are separable so that PDMS chip is used as a disposable but the heater chip is able to be used repeatedly. Pumping performance was simulated by CFD software and investigated experimentally. The performance was the best when the duty ratio of the applied voltage to the heater was 33%.

In this study, we carried out an investigation of the etch characteristics of silicon (Si) film, and the selectivity of Si to $SiO_2$ in $SF_6/O_2$ plasma. The etch rate of the Si film was decreased on adding $O_2$ gas, and the selectivity of Si to $SiO_2$ was increased, on adding $O_2$ gas to the $SF_6$ plasma. The optical condition of the Si film with this work was 1,350 nm/min, at a gas mixing ratio of $SF_6/O_2$ (=130:30 sccm). At the same time, the etch rate was measured as functions of the various etching parameters. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed the efficient destruction of oxide bonds by ion bombardment, as well as the accumulation of high volatile reaction products on the etched surface. Field emission auger electron spectroscopy analysis was used to examine the efficiency of the ion-stimulated desorption of the reaction products.
This paper extends the use of the hierarchic degenerated shell element to geometric non-linear analysis of composite laminated skew plates by the p-version of the finite element method. For the geometric non-linear analysis, the total Lagrangian formulation is adopted with moderately large displacement and small strain being accounted for in the sense of von Karman hypothesis. The present model is based on equivalent-single layer laminate theory with the first order shear deformation including a shear correction factor of 5/6. The integrals of Legendre polynomials are used for shape functions with p-level varying from 1 to 10. A wide variety of linear and non-linear results obtained by the p-version finite element model are presented for the laminated skew plates as well as laminated square plates. A numerical analysis is made to illustrate the influence of the geometric non-linear effect on the transverse deflections and the stresses with respect to width/depth ratio (a/h), skew angle (${\beta}$), and stacking sequence of layers. The present results are in good agreement with the results in literatures.
