  • We have developed an novel vertical-alignment (VA) - $\pi$ cell mode that provides a wide viewing angle and fast response times for negative dielectric anisotropy nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on a homeotropic polyimide (PI) surfaces. We had the good voltage-transmittance curves and low driving voltages were achieved with the novel VA - $\pi$ cell mode without negative compensation film. Iso-viewing angle characteristics using the novel VA - $\pi$ cell mode without negative compensation film of NLC was also successfully observed. As well a fast response time of 31.7ms for the novel VA - $\pi$ cell mode was measured. Consequently, It is seen that by using the novel VA - $\pi$ cell mode the iso-viewing angle, fast response time, and low driving voltage characteristics can be achieved.

  • We have developed a new multidomain vertical-alignment (MVA) mode using a homeotropic photopolymer that provides a wider viewing angle for nematic liquidcrystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy. Good voltage-transmittance curves for he new MVA cell using the homeotropic photopolymer were observed. The viewing angle of the new MVA cell using the homeotropic photopolymer was wider than that of the conventional VA cell. The wide viewing angle using the new MVA cell is attributable to 4-domain by the ribs with UV exposure on the photopolymer.

  • We report on a wide-viewing liquid crystal (LC) display with bi-level microstructures spontaneously formed by selective wetting on a chemically heterogeneous surface. The bi-level microstructures serve as spacers for maintaining uniform cell gap, as well as protrusions for wide-viewing properties. Our LC cell having the bi-level microstructures shows good electro-optic properties.

  • We have developed twist nematic liquid crystal displays (TN-LCDs), of which the viewing angle can be controlled. The TN-LCDs have the function of switching between the wide viewing mode and narrow viewing angle mode using two tilted LC layers. Tilt angles of the two LC layers, $14^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ were required in both wide viewing angle and narrow viewing angle modes, respectively. In this way, the viewing angle range in terms of contrast ratio 5:1 can be switched from $120^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$.

  • Non-emissive LCDs need a backlight, and have difficulty implementing wide viewing angles due to differences in phase retardation depending on the behavior of the liquid crystals. Although wide viewing angles are good characteristics for devices such as TVs, they are not good for mobile devices. In this paper, we propose ways to design diffusers with ELC lenses to achieve wide and narrow viewing angles depending on the circumstances. A study was conducted on optimizing the design of a liquid lens diffuser with the same light as that for an OLED, by extracting design factors that affect the performance of the diffuser and applying the Taguchi method to them.

  • We compared various LCD modes for wide viewing angle. These modes can be classified as film-compensation, multi-domain, IPS. So far, IPS and multi-domain VA represent best performance. The performance gap with respect to CRT is diminishing.

  • A holographic display system with a 22-inch LCD panel is developed to provide a wide viewing angle and large holographic 3D image. It is realized by steering a narrow viewing window resulting from a very large pixel pitch compared to the wave length of the laser light. Point light sources and a lens array make it possible to arbitrarily control the position of the viewing window for a moving observer. The holographic display provides both eyes of the observer with a holographic 3D image using two vertically placed LCD panels and a beam splitter to support the holographic stereogram.

  • We report viewing angle characteristics of the Ultra-FFS TFT-LCD. The FFS mode is known to exhibit both a wide viewing angle and high transmittance, owing to the approximated in-plane rotation of the LC director. Nevertheless, in the bright state, the device shows bluish and yellowish color parallel and perpendicular to the LC director at off-normal directions since the LC director rotates onl.v in one direction, and in addition, the grey scale inversion exists in large oblique viewing angle. However, the Ultra-FFS shows no grey scale inversion and no color shift in wide viewing angle range.

  • This study was conducted for the purpose of evaluating the impressions gained by the members of the audience who have seen contents in a dome theater, based on their seating positions. Dome Theater Gaia provided the environment where the contents for evaluation were to be presented, and enquete (survey) was used as the investigative method. The survey results showed that the presentation of wide-viewing-angle three-dimensional (3D) contents proved effective in enhancing the 3D effect and the presence in a dome theater. Moreover, the study results confirmed that in relation to the impression evaluation of the contents for different seating positions, the optimal seating position varied according to the presentation method of the 3D and 2D contents.

  • In this study, the selective-wettability-inscription (SWI) technique for the wet-etchingless fabrication of surface microstructures applicable to wide-viewing liquid crystal displays (LCDs) on plastic substrates was demonstrated. On the basis of the selective wetting of the photopolymer, the bi-level microstructures were spontaneously formed to serve as spacers for maintaining uniform cell gap and protrusions for the generation of multi-domains. The LC cell that has bi-level microstructures shows good extinction in the field-off state and a wide-viewing property in the field-on state. The SWI technique would be useful for the fabrication of flexible displays on plastic substrates.
