We have developed a wide-field imaging camera system, called WICZO, to monitor light of the night sky over extended period. Such monitoring is necessary for studying the morphology of interplanetary dust cloud and also the time and spatial variations of airglow emission. The system consists of an electric cooler a CCD camera with $60\%$ quantum efficiency at 500nm, and a fish-eye lens with $180^{\circ}$ field of view. Wide field imaging is highly desired in light of the night sky observations in general, because the zodiacal light and the airglow emission extend over the entire sky. This paper illustrates the design of WICZO, reports the result of its laboratory performance test, and presents the first night sky image, which was taken, under collaboration with Byulmaro Observatory, on top of Mt. Bongrae at Yongweol in January, 2004.
A wide-field CCD detector for solar eclipse observations is discussed. The CCD is supposed to be of a moderate size, and the image of the corona is obtained by scanning the field of view. Results of the 1995 solar eclipse observation are shown which have been made with a prototype of the scanning CCD detector.
Extra-tidal feature of the globular clusters such as tidal tails and halos can be a crucial evidence of the merging scenario of the Galaxy formation in the dynamical point of view. To search for such an extra-tidal feature of globular clusters located in the Galactic bulge(RGC<3kpc), we obtained wide-field near-infrared JHKs images of 6 metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-1.0) clusters and 3 metal-rich ([Fe/H]>-1.0) clusters. Observations were carried out using IRSF 1.4m telescope and SIRIUS near-infrared camera, during 2006~2007. The obtained images have a total maximum field-of-view of ~ $21'\times 21'$. To select clusters' member stars and minimize the field star contaminations, we applied CMD masking algorithm. Smoothed surface density contour maps with selected stars for each cluster show overdensity features around the tidal radius and beyond. Also, radial surface density profiles within the tidal radius of the clusters show an overdensity feature as a change of slope of the radial profile. The results add further observational constraints of the formation of the Galactic bulge.
We have constructed a near-infrared imaging camera which is attached to the prime focus of 105cm Schmidt telescope at Kiso Observatory. The camera is equipped with a 1040$\times$1040 PtSi CSD array developed by Mitsubishi Electric Co. The combination of Kiso Schmidt and the array gives a wide field of view of 18.4'$\times$18.4' with a reasonable spatial resolution of 1.06' /pixel. The system performances of the camera have been evaluated through laboratory and observational tests. Low noise, good cosmetics(no defect pixels), and good stability of the camera system show an excellent performance for astronomical use.

In this paper, we propose efficient design and construction of an infrared wide angle optical system with low distortion utilizing a high resolution detector for automobile application. The operational convenience and the recognition ability have been improved significantly by applying the high resolution uncooled thermal detector with wide angle optical design. The active ahtermalization mechanism is implemented so that the adjustment of the optical component of the system is to be made automatically according to the temperature change by motorized control. The modulation transfer function (MTF) is about 50% at the Nyquist frequency close the diffraction limit. The distortion is less than 5% at the edge field. As a result, a high-resolution uncooled thermal optical system with wide field of view (FOV) is assembled, aligned and its performance is tested successfully.
There are many kinds of optical systems to widen a field of view. Fisheye lenses with view angles of 180 degrees and omni-directional systems with the view angles of 360 degrees are recognized as proper systems to widen a field of view. In this study, we proposed a new optical system to overcome drawbacks of conventional omni-directional systems such as a limited field of view in the central area and difficulties in manufacturing. Thus we can eliminate the undesirable reflection components of the omni-directional system and solve the primary drawback of the conventional system. Finally, tolerance analysis using Zernike polynomial coefficients was performed to confirm the productivity of the new optical system. Furthermore, we established a method of optical axis alignment and compensation schemes for the proposed optical system as a result of tolerance analysis. In a sensitivity calculation, we investigated performance degradation due to manufacturing error using Code V(R) macro function. Consequently, we suggested compensation schemes using a lens group decentering. This paper gives a good guidance for the optical design and tolerance analysis including the compensation method in the extremely wide angle system.

The MATS (Mesosphere Airglow/Aerosol Tomography Spectroscopy) satellite is the next Swedish science microsatellite. We report optical performance test results of the limb telescope, which is the major payload. This telescope is designed with "linear astigmatism-free" (LAF) off-axis optical system in order to have high optical performance across the wide field of view. We measured Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) and Encircled Energy Diameter (EED) of the limb telescope. Full field imaging tests show expected results without linear astigmatism across the full field of view ($5.67^{\circ}{\times}0.91^{\circ}$). Since the amount of stray light is from the earth and the sun, we also simulated and measured the stray light in the field image.

We have performed computer simulation and experiment to obtain electro-optic characteristics of reflective hybrid aligned nematic (R-HAN) cell driven by fringe field, in which the cell consists of polarizer, optical compensation film, LC layer and reflector. Conventional R-HAN cell driven by fringe field using only the LC layer shows high wavelength dispersion at dark-state and thus viewing angle characteristic is strongly wavelength-dependent. In order to improve this demerit, we added one optical compensation film to conventional R-HAN cell. The display with optimized cell parameters shows low wavelength dispersion at dark-state and exhibits a wide viewing angle without the occurrence of grey scale inversion over a wide range of viewing angles and the contrast ratio greater than 5 over exists about 120$^{\circ}$ in vortical direction and 160$^{\circ}$in horizontal direction. Experimental results show good agreements with theoretical results and fast response time.
Recently various types of driver assistance systems have been used for automobiles. In 2008, the U.S Congress passed a law which required that most cars be equipped with devices to warn objects behind the vehicle. Because of that, market of rear view cameras is expected to rise dramatically. Therefore many suppliers try to provide a wide angle camera for car makers. But a high distortion is caused by the wide angle might result in lower image quality. In order to improve the image quality, normally we use an algorithm to correct a distortion. Though we can improve the distorted image by correction algorithm, we must pay more cost to use it. In this paper, we propose a new optical system reducing a distortion in contrast to a conventional lens without cost. In other words, we can see only an area of interest. That is similar to reducing a field of view. Using a new optical system, we can get a less distorted image. In order to view an area of interest, we introduce an off axis optical system having refractive surfaces and reflective surfaces. In this paper, we describe the results of design and, evaluation of an off axis wide angle compact imaging system. In comparison to conventional wide angle lens, we can get the improvement of MTF, distortion, and lateral color aberrations. And we also can reduce a total cost because we don't need the outer apparatus or bracket to mount on the car.

The Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) is a wide-field photometric system installed by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). Here, we present the overall technical specifications of the KMTNet observation system, test observation results, data transfer and image processing procedure, and finally, the KMTNet science programs. The system consists of three 1.6 m wide-field optical telescopes equipped with mosaic CCD cameras of 18k by 18k pixels. Each telescope provides a 2.0 by 2.0 square degree field of view. We have finished installing all three telescopes and cameras sequentially at the Cerro-Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) in Chile, the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in South Africa, and the Siding Spring Observatory (SSO) in Australia. This network of telescopes, which is spread over three different continents at a similar latitude of about -30 degrees, enables 24-hour continuous monitoring of targets observable in the Southern Hemisphere. The test observations showed good image quality that meets the seeing requirement of less than 1.0 arcsec in I-band. All of the observation data are transferred to the KMTNet data center at KASI via the international network communication and are processed with the KMTNet data pipeline. The primary scientific goal of the KMTNet is to discover numerous extrasolar planets toward the Galactic bulge by using the gravitational microlensing technique, especially earth-mass planets in the habitable zone. During the non-bulge season, the system is used for wide-field photometric survey science on supernovae, asteroids, and external galaxies.
