  • Terahertz wave is a kind of electromagnetic radiation whose frequency lies in 0.1THz $\~$10THz range. In this paper, generation and detection characteristics of terahertz (THz) radiation by photoconductive antenna (PCA) method has been described. Using modern integrated circuit techniques, micron-sized dipole antenna has been fabricated on a low-temperature grown GaAs (LT-GaAs) wafer. A mode-locked Ti:Sapphire femtosecond laser beam is guided and focused onto photoconductive antennas (emitter and detector) to generate and measure THz pulses. Ultra-wide band THz radiation with frequencies between 0.1 THz and 3 THz was observed. Terahertz field amplitude variation with antenna bias voltage, pump laser power, pump laser wavelength and probe laser power was investigated. As a primary application example. a live clover leaf was imaged with the terahertz radiation.

  • In this paper, we present a performance analysis of the smart antenna test-bed operating in a IS2000 1x through a test-bed that has been implemented on a DSP(TMS320C6711) board. The test-bed consists of a PC (for generating the RX data), beam-former(i.e., a stand-alone PCB for weight computation), and an interfacing module. The performance improvements compared to a normal base station system consisting of a single antenna are shown in terms the BER(bit error rate) in the wide-band CDMA channel.

  • KASI and NAOJ are making collaborating efforts to implement faster mapping capability into the new 275-500 GHz Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment focal plane array (FPA). Feed horn antenna is one of critical parts of the FPA. Required fractional bandwidth is almost 60 % while that of traditional conical horn is less than 50 %. Therefore, to achieve this wideband performance, we adopted a horn of which the corrugation depths have a longitudinal profile. A profiled horn has features not only of wide bandwidth but also of shorter length compared to a linear-tapered corrugated horn, and lower cost fabrication with less error can be feasible. In our design process the flare region is represented by a cubic splined curve with several parameters. Parameters of the flare region and each dimension of the throat region are optimized by a differential evolution algorithm to keep >20 dB return loss and >30 dB maximum cross-polarization level over the operation bandwidth. To evaluate RF performance of the horn generated by the optimizer, we used a commercial mode matching software, WASP-NET. Also, Gaussian beam (GB) masks to far fields were applied to give better GB behavior over frequencies. The optimized design shows >23 dB return loss and >33 dB maximum cross-polarization level over the whole band. Gaussicity of the horn is over 96.6 %. The length of the horn is 12.5 mm which is just 57 % of the ALMA band 8 feed horn (21.96 mm).

  • In this paper, a symmetric microwave lens to steer wide angle and to operate at broad band frequency range for a linear phased array transmitter was designed. To get accurate beam steering performance far a linear phased array transmitter, uniform amplitude transmission characteristics of microwave lens was focused. The measured result for the insertion loss deviation between Input and output ports of microstrip lens with 8 beam ports and 8 array ports was $\pm$3.1 ㏈ over 6~18 ㎓ band, which was very uniform characteristics. Using 8 elements linear array antenna, it was confirmed the radiation beam could be steered over $\pm$60$^{\circ}$ in azimuth. And the measured lens performance data and multi-beam steering pattern were presented.

  • In this paper, it is studied on wide radiating slot antenna's miniaturization for ultra wide-band(UWB) technologies and notch structure to prevent interference between UWB systems and existing wireless systems for using Wi-Fi service of IEEE standards 802.11 a/n. Proposed antenna that wide slot is decreased from $\lambda/2$ to $\lambda/4$ length of resonant frequency has decreased by 72 % compared with conventional antenna. And optimized T-shaped CPW-fed stub has satisfied UWB bandwidth for 3.0~11.8 GHz. Then, creating 2-order Hilbert curve slot line in the stub's patch area, 4.9~5.6 GHz that centered frequency is 5 GHz is eliminated. Finally, the designed antenna constructed on FR4-epoxy has $20{\times}15\;mm^2$ dimension. The measured results that are obtained return loss under -10 dB through 3.2~11.8 GHz without Wi-Fi bandwidth, a linear phase characteristic, a stable group delay, and omnidirectional radiation patterns are presented.

  • The proposed circular patch antenna was designed to include relative bandwidth of above 25% as designed by the FCC in the FCC in the 3.1 ~ 10.6 GHz band. The antenna was induced to have a wide band characteristic through two structures of the usual microstrip line and a microstrip line with a linear change in impedance. The proposed finally antenna was designed using an FR4_epoxy substrate with 4.7% permittivity, 0.02 of loss tangent, and 1.6 mm of thickness, and was simulated with the use of HFSS made by Ansys. Return loss at frequency, VSWR, radiation pattern and the gain of the antenna were analysed. As a result, if satisfied a return loss of -10 dB and $VSWR{\leq}2$ from 2.28 ~ 13.35 GHz, showing about the bandwidth of 11.89 GHz, and the radiation pattern was unidirectional in all bands. The antenna gain gradually increased from 2 ~ 8 GHz and had the highest gain of 7.92 dBi at 8 GHz. and the gain gradually decreased in the 9 ~ 12 GHz band.

  • This paper presents a microstrip patch array antenna having transmission feed and reception feed for satellite communication in the Ku band. In this paper, the element of the patch array antenna is a three-stacked structure consisting of one radiation patch and two parasitic patches for high gain and wide bandwidth characteristics. To obtain higher gain, the unit elements are expanded into a $1{\times}8$ may using a mixture of series and parallel feeds. The proposed antenna has horizontal polarization for the Rx band and vertical polarization for the Tx band. To verify the practicality of this antenna, we fabricated a three-stacked patch array antenna and measured its performance. The gain of the array antenna in the Rx and Tx bands exceeds 17 and 18 dBi, respectively. The impedance bandwidth is over 10 % in both bands. The cross-polarization level is below -25 dB, and the sidelobe level is below -9.4 dB.

  • In this paper, we introduce a design method for a broadband planar quasi-Yagi antenna (QYA) for terrestrial digital television (DTV) receiving. The coplanar strip line feeding the driver dipole is connected to a microstrip line and is terminated by short circuit. By appending a wide strip-type director at a location close to the driver dipole, a broadband impedance matching and a gain characteristics in a high frequency region are obtained. The gain characteristics in a low frequency region are improved by adding a reflector formed by a truncated ground plane. To reduce the antenna size, the strip-type dipole and reflector are modified to half bowtie (V)-shaped elements. The effects of various parameters on the antenna characteristics are examined. An antenna, as an design example for the proposed antenna, is designed for the operation in the frequency band of 470-806 MHz for terrestrial DTV. The optimized antenna is fabricated on an FR4 substrate and tested experimentally to verify the results of this study.

  • In the paper, characterization and analysis of UWB(Ultra Wide Band) antennas in time domain are described. The impulse propagation channel including UWB antennas is proposed for the analysis in time domain. Using the proposed propagation channel, the technique of obtaining impulse response of UWB antenna is proposed. Also, ringing, peak value of the impulse response, and the width of the impulse response are introduced as parameters for characterizing a UWB antenna in time domain. A modified UWB conical monopole antenna, a UWB TEM horn antenna, and a UWB stepped fat monopole antenna were fabricated. From the measurement of reflection coefficients, three antennas had bandwidth more than 3 GHz. The impulse responses of the antennas were measured in an anechoic chamber. The results showed that the TEM horn with highest gain has the highest peak amplitude and the stepped fat monopole antenna with narrowest bandwidth for reflection coeffcient had the widest width of the impulse response. Also, ringing in the stepped fat monopole antennas and the UWB conical monopole antenna were observed.
