  • This study was performed to develop experimental model for milling degree and whiteness from analysis the CBB (colored bran balance) index using NMG dying and image processing. The endosperm layer increased and the pericarp, aleurone layer and CBB index decreased as the milling degree and whiteness increased. So, CBB index was closely linked to milling degree and whiteness. A empirical CBB index model was developed according to the milling degree and whiteness. The model were found to fit adequately to all test data with a coefficient of determination of 0.99, and therefore the CBB model proved to be quite applicable.

  • Objectives: The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of polishing systems and surface sealant on the color stability and whiteness index of single-shade resin composites after staining and bleaching. Materials and Methods: Three single-shade (Omnichroma, Charisma Diamond One, Zenchroma) and one multi-shade (Filtek Z250) materials were tested. From each resin composite, 40 specimens were prepared. The specimens were divided into 4 subgroups (n = 10) according to the surface treatments: 1-step polishing, 1-step + Biscover LV, 2-step polishing, and 2-step polishing + Biscover LV. Color differences (ΔE00) were calculated after being immersed in the coffee solution for 12 days. After the staining, the specimens were immersed in a whitening mouthrinse (Crest-3D White) for 12 hours. Whiteness index differences (ΔWID = WID after staining - WID after bleaching) values were recorded. The generalized linear model was used for analysis (p< 0.05). Results: The lowest and highest ΔE00 values were found for Zenchroma and Charisma Diamond One respectively. Sealed groups indicated higher ΔE00 values than nonsealed groups with significant differences (p = 0.008). The lowest and highest ΔWID values were found for Zenchroma and Charisma Diamond One respectively. Sealed groups indicated lower ΔWID values than nonsealed groups with significant differences (p = 0.022). Conclusions: The use of surface sealant increased the discoloration and showed less whiteness change in resin materials. When the 1-step was compared with the 2-step polishing, the effects on the color stability and whiteness index values of the resin materials were similar.

  • The color properties of a white or nearly colorless fabric are represented by whiteness index (WI) or yellowness index (YI). These two indexes relate to a white fabric's color quality. The purpose of this study was to identify the properties of WI and YI on the CIELAB through the simulations of estimation data for a systemization of color quality control. The results indicated that the relationship between WI and YI was a negative correlation, however the coefficients of correlation function between WI and YI were depended on hue. There were two hue transition points of the rate of changes in WI and YI. These hue transition points were the reference points to divide the hue contribution to WI and YI. These points were not the point of h=0 and h=180 and asymmetric. In addition, where the colors were same distance from the white point on the CIELAB, the rate of changes in WI and YI by ${\Delta}$Ew were depending on hue. Specifically, when WI decreased, YI of reddish and yellowish tinted colors decreased more than bluish tinted colors.

  • Fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) are used extensively in the paper industry to improve the optical properties. FWAs are neither photochemically nor thermally stable, and thereby the papers containing FWAs can be damaged by external heat. We observed that the CIE whiteness, ISO brightness and fluorescence index of the commercial papers decreased with the thermal treatment and thought that the thermal fastness of FWAs was the main factor affecting the thermal stability of the papers. Thus, the model papers treated with three types of FWAs were manufactured respectively and the thermal stability of FWAs was identified by determining ${\Delta}$ CIE whiteness and ${\Delta}$ fluorescence index.

  • The purpose of this study was to study accumlated residual soils which may be one of the causes for yellowing of worn cloths. Wear and wash tests of white cotton undershirts were repeated at 30 households sellected at random over a period of 60 days. Laundry conditions were similar to home laundry habits in a fact-finding survey, using a powdery heavy duty detergent containing no enzymes or enzymes. The subjects in this study were survey of laundry actual condition, the undershirts from prior to and after the final washing was measured residual soils, $L^*a^*b^*$ value and mellowness index of CIE system. D3ta were analysed by simple correlation analysis of wear and wash cycle, residual soils, whiteness The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Using pattern of washing machine, Presoaking was no singinificant differnece in general characteristics of survey respondent. Laundry frequency was significant difference in income level, occupation of housewives whether or not. Use of cold and hot water was significant difference in residence shape. 2. The analyzed consequences of recognition and actual behavior in connection with laundry were found variables each other to have independence or not. 3. Amount of residual sebum soils is using non-enzyme detergent were much more than in using enzyme detergent, increased linearly with increase of the number of wear and wash cycles. 4. Residual protein soils with increase of the number wear and wash cycles less than in laundering more easy than sebum soils. Since accumulated residual sebum soils were much more than residual protein soils. 5. Increase of residual soils was raised mellowness index and diminshed whiteness. yellowness index of residual sebum soils was higher than protein soils. If increase of whiteness will be incresed, amount of residual sebum soils will be decreased sebum soils. Because amount of residual sebum soils much more than protein soils, yellowness index of residual sebum soils was more higher than that of protein soils.

세탁 후 오염제거도를 객관적으로 평가하기 위해서 각 시료의 K/S values, CIELAB, CMC, ASTM E313 Whiteness Index(WI), ASTM E313 Yellowness Index, and CIE tristimulus values를 구하였고.

  • This study describes the feasibility and optimization of reactive dyeing on bio treated cotton knitted fabrics. For this, cotton knitted fabrics distinctly with two different enzymes, alkaline Pectinases(Scourzyme $L^{(R)}$) and Pectate lyases(Bactosol Co. ip $liquor^{(R)}$). In this way by increasing the concentration and processing temperature, the access of enzymes towards the fatty and waxy substrate was found to be accelerated. To achieve higher absorbency and whiteness index, a series of experiments was carried out to assure that Pectate lyases enzymes possesses high access towards the fats and waxes at high temperature. To this end, cotton knitted fabrics was dyed without oxidative bleaching step. The Pectate lyases scoured and dyed fabrics showed less color difference when 2% dye shade is used. The fabrics pre-scoured with Pectate lyases showed good the light and washing fastness properties, compared to the conventional and Pectinases dyed fabrics. However pectinases enzymes showed lower activity at high temperature, caused poor wettability and whiteness index of fabrics. The improvement of the accessibility of enzyme to the pectin at higher temperature Pectate lyases treatment before dyeing was found to be useful for subsequent pectin degradation in cotton knitted fabrics.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the change of shrinkage, tensile strength, elasticity, light-fastness and color-fastness of 100% cotton upper under wear after acidic treatment and repeated washing and drying. Both of warp and welt were shrinked, especially in the early washing stage. Tensile strength was not weakened by 15 times of repeated washing. Hunter whiteness(HW) of white-underwear decreased, but color difference($\Delta$E) and yellow index(YI) increased corresponding to the frequency of washing and sunlight drying. The discoloration of color-underwear was significant in the early stage.

  • Pulping of paper mulberry (Broussonetia kazinoki) white bast has been examined by novel atmospheric pressure pulping methods. The viscosity of pulp has been found to be highly sensitive and variable with pulping methods. Therefore, selections of pulping chemicals and conditions are very important. Two kinds of pulping procedures were employed for the high viscosity pulp manufacturing. The one is ammonium oxalate treatment and the other is sodium chlorite and acetic acid treatment. Not only chemical components and pulp yields which of paper mulberry white bast but also water retention value (WRV), whiteness index, yellowness index, and colors of every pulp were examined. The hot water, 1% NaOH, and ethanol-benzene extractives which of paper mulberry white bast were 4.48%, 28.45%, and 2.84%, respectively. The contents of holocellulose, lignin, and ash were 90.66%, 1.05%, and 2.18%, respectively. In the pulp yields, group 1 which treated with only ammonium oxalate were 77.04-81.71%, group 2 which treated with ammonium oxalate and acidified sodium chlorite separately and washed between first and second stages were 64.15-83.90%, group 3 which treated with ammonium oxalate and acidified sodium chlorite separately and not washed between first and second stages were 57.35-73.17%, and group 4 which treated with mixed ammonium oxalate and acidified sodium chlorite were 66.58-68.43%. The pulps treated with acidified sodium chlorite showed high whiteness index, but the pulps treated with only ammonium oxalate showed high yellowness index. Variations in the combinations of treatments resulted in different pulp characteristics.
