  • In this study, we carried out the turning of plastic mold steel(STAVAX) with whisker reinforced ceramic tool(WA1) and analyzed ANOVA(Analysis of Variance) test. Multi-regression analysis was performed to find influential factors to surface roughness and to derive regression equation. Results are follows: From ANOVA test and confidence interval analysis of surface roughness, We found that influential factors to surface roughness was feed rate, cutting speed and depth of cut in order. From multi-regression analysis, we derived regression equation of STAVAX. it's coefficient of determination($R^2$) was 0.945 and It means that regression equation is significant. From experimental verification, we confirmed that surface roughness was predictable by regression equation. Compared with former research, we confirmed that increase of feed rate is the main cause of the growing of surface roughness and cutting force.

  • The effects of heat treatment on matte pure tin-plated Cu leadframes at high temperature and humidity conditions were investigated. After 1800 hrs of storage at $55^{\circ}C/85%$ RH, approximately 14.5 ${\mu}m$ long striation-shaped whiskers were observed on the surface of the without postbake treatment (WOPB) samples, while no whiskers were found in with postbake treatment (WPB) samples. The preferred orientations of Sn grains in WOPB and WPB sample did not change after the postbake treatment at $125^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. However, both changed from (112) to (321) and (101), respectively, after 1800 hrs of storage at $55^{\circ}C/85%$ RH. The tensile stress of 8 MPa generated in as-plated sample was changed to a compression stress of 17 MPa after 2 days in room temperature storage. Due to the grain growth during postbake treatment, the WPB samples have more regular grains than the WOPB samples. In the as-plated sample, 0.32 ${\mu}m$ thickness of planar intermetallic compound (IMC) was observed. The IMCs in the WOPB and WPB samples had two distinct layers with large grains of $Cu_6Sn_5$ and with small grains of ${\eta}-Cu_{6.26}Sn_5$.

  • In this study a new growing method of silicon nitride whiskers in the inside of large pores made intentionally during the sintering was conducted. Pore size, pore vol%, and nitrogen pressure were used as experimental variables. Silicon nitride whiskers were well grown in the inside of pores with low pore vol% range from 14 to 27 but not grown with high pore vol% such as 39 and 50. On the other hand, pore size and nitrogen pressure did not have any influence on the whisker growth. Therefore the most important factor to grow silicon nitride whisker in the inside of large pores during sintering was to make pores isolated or closed.

  • Trigeminovascular system plays an important role for the cerebral memodynamics. The aim of this study was to investigate the alterations in cerebrovascular reactivity by trigeminovascular system injury in rats. Trigeminovascular system of male Sprague-Dawley rats was injured by either denervation of nasocilliary nerve or neonatal capsaicin treatment. Trigeminovascular system was stimulated by controlled hemorrhagic hypotension or somatosensory (whisker) stimulation. Changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and pial arterial diameter were continuously measured by laser-Doppler flowmetry and videomicroscopy, respectively. Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity in cerebral cortex was determined by measuring the conversion of $L-^3H-arginine\;to\;L-^3H-citrulline$. Cyclic GMP levels in cerebral cortex and pial artery were determined using the cyclic GMP $^{125}I$ scintillation proximity assay system. rCBF autoregulation was impaired or almost abolished by trigeminovascular system injury. rCBF response to whisker stimulation was significantly attenuated by trigeminovascular system injury. NOS activity as well as cyclic GMP level in cerebral cortex and pial artery were significantly reduced in the group of trigeminovascular system injury. These results suggest that trigeminovascular system injury causes prominent alterations in cerebrovascular reactivity, and that NO, which is generated by neuronal NOS in the trigeminovascular system, is implicated in the regulation of rCBF.

  • Interfacial characteristics of aluminum borate whisker reinforced AS52 matrix composite was investigated. Peak hardness of AS52 composite was obtained aging at $170^{\circ}C$ for 15h and the aging process was accelerated by the presence of the aluminium borate whisker. The MgO layer, which was the interfacial reaction product between the reinforcement and the Mg matrix, was produced with 20 nm thickness in as-cast condition. As the aging time increased, the thickness of the interfacial reaction layer increased to 50 nm in peak aged condition. The nano-indentation test results indicated that the strength of interface was improved by the aging but over-aging degraded the reinforcement and decreased the interfacial strength which resulted in the decrease of overall composite strength.

  • Fresh and hardened behaviors of a new hybrid fiber (steel fiber, polyvinyl alcohol fiber and calcium carbonate whisker) reinforced cementitious composites (HyFRCC) with admixtures (fly ash, silica fume and water reducer) have been studied. Within the limitations of the equipment and testing program, it is illustrated that the rheological properties of the new HyFRCC conform to the modified Bingham model. The relations between flow spread and yield stress as well as flow rate and plastic viscosity both conform well with negative exponent correlation, justifying that slump flow and flow rate test can be applied to replace the other two as simple rheology measurement and control method in jobsite. In addition, for the new HyFRCC with fly ash and water reducer, the mathematical model between the rheological and mechanical properties conform well with the quadratic function, and these quadratic function curves are always concave upward. Based on mathematical analysis, an optimal range of rheology/ flowability can be identified to achieve ideal mechanical properties. In addition, this optimization method can be extended to PVA fiber reinforced cement-based composites.

  • Polymers are inherently vulnerable to flame, which limits their application to various high-tech industries. In addition, environmental regulations restrict the use of halogen-based flame retardants which has best flame-retardant effect. There are inorganic flame retardants and phosphorous flame retardants as representative non-halogen-based flame retardants. However, high content of flame retardants is required to impart high flame retardancy of the polymers, and this leads to a decrease in mechanical properties. In this research, a new approach for inorganic flame retardant-based polymer composites with high mechanical properties and flame retardancy was suggested. Inorganic flame retardants called as magnesium oxysulfate whisker (MOSw) were used in this research. MOSw can extinguish fire by releasing water and non-combustible gases when exposed to flame. In addition, they have reinforcing effect when added into the polymer with its high aspect ratio. Expandable graphite (EG) was used as a flame-retardant supplement by helping to form a more dense char layer. Through this research, it is expected that it can be applied to various industries requiring flame retardancy such as automobile, and architecture by replacing halogen-based flame polymer composites.

  • In this paper, the bending performance of a MSFRHPC (containing steel fiber, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber, and CW)-reinforced beam was studied for the first time. Introducing a multiscale fiber system increased the first crack load (up to 150%), yield load (up to 50%), and peak load (up to 15%) of reinforced beams. The multiscale fiber system delays cracking of the reinforced beam, reduces crack width of the reinforced beam in normal use, and improves the durability of the beam. Considering yield load and peak load, the reinforcing effect of multiscale fiber on the high-reinforcement ratio beam (1.00%) is better than that on the low-reinforcement ratio beam (0.57%). Introducing fibers slowed the development of cracks in the reinforced beam under bending. With the added hybrid fiber, the deformation concentration of reinforced beams after yield was more significant with concentration in 1 or 2 cracks. A model for predicting the flexural capacity of MSFRHPC-reinforced beams was proposed, considering the action of multiscale hybrid fibers. This research is helpful for structure application of MSFRHPC-containing CW.

  • Reversed plane bending fatigue tests were conducted on SiC particle reinforced and SiC whisker reinforced aluminum composite. The initiation and growth behaviors of small surface fatigue cracks were continuously monitored by the replica technique and the causes of fracture and fracture mechanism were investigated by SEM. The relationship between da/dn and $K_{max}$ show that da/dn increases in high stress level while decrease and again increases with increasing of $K_{max}$ in low stress level for two materials.
